Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Thanks again Quickstatus. I will check again in the Questions thread a couple of weeks out as you suggest, but as the award/discount buckets in the premium cabins are so full already, i can't see that improving by much!
My thoughts about multiple "avenues" for on-departure upgrades (bag drop, QP ) would be the opportunity to capitalise on any late "no shows", if such a thing is still possible.

Upgrade avenues:

1)Operational Upgrade - the most elusive and sought after upgrade. This one does not cost any points or cash and does not require preregistration.
2)Bid Now Upgrade (https://www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/upgrade/global/en) - Register your $$ bid
3)Classic Upgrade Rewards - require sufficient points to upgrade.
4)On Departure Upgrade - Domestic only. (Not available for international flights). Ask at QClub, QLounges, Checkin kiosks.

On Departure upgrades are available for domestic QF flights only (and not for flight numbers QF1-199 : as these are international flights)

Repeat: For international flights, upgrades are processed electronically and ground staff do not have any authority to process and provide upgrades.
Even Chairmans Lounge and Platinum 1 flyers have their upgrades processed by special teams who are not frontline.

Though it never hurts to ask...

Just to be clear you can't add the EF seat numbers.
All that indicates is that at least 9 seats are available in that fare bucket. As soon as 1 seat is sold, the system may adjust availability in that bucket, and other buckets based on various algorithms.

For example in this case, F4 A4 suggests that there are probably only 4 seats (not 8) in First available, but you can book them in either fare bucket depending on your booking channel and fare availability.

Correct and "9" means 9 or more seats.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

The magic SMS confirmation for J>F on QF1 SYD-LHR today (Thu) received at T-30 (PS) for 2 pax!

Now, having been checking E/F regularly, this is what I can't really explain. All up until last Sun E/F was showing F8 A8 J7 C7, then on Sun it went down to 3 seats in F [F3 A3 J8 C8], and on Mon to none [F0 A0 J9 C9]. Being PS (until after this flight) we all but have given up hope knowing that for the PS chances 24hrs prior to departure at least some seats needed to be available in F. Yet even though E/F was showing F0 for more than 48 hours, 4 seats were showing as unoccupied on the seat map, but we recieved the SMS only Wed morning (not that I'm complaining!)

So is it possible that the revenue/inventory management system already factors in the upgrades that will be confirmed to free up space in J for upgrades / bid now etc. from lower cabins, and the E/F query returns the result of it? Or is it more likely that someone with a paid F ticket decided to travel on another day?

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Thought I'd post a good news story, I was able to upgrade myself and travelling partner (on different booking) for our recent trip MEL to LAX, from premium, to Business on both segments. I'm gold, she's Bronze. was very excited to get those sms's
Thanks to those who posted about doing family upgrades

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

The QF upgrade gods have just agreed that I am worthy, at about T-24, to move from Y Flex (H) to J on tomorrow's QF81 SYD-SIN. I've been grounded for quite a few months now, after welcoming my first child back in April, so it will be nice to get back into it in style! A champagne breakfast in the F lounge won't hurt, either! ;)

Cheers,
Matt.

And the matching upgrade for the return flight on QF82 tomorrow night, came through at about T-27. Happy days!

Cheers,
Matt.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Received the text at around T-27 for a successful upgrade Y -> Y+ for tomorrow's QF93 MEL-LAX. Loads are looking pretty light so was reasonably confident of getting it.

Have put it for an upgrade to J on the return QF94 in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed that one goes through so I actually get some sleep for once!

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Successful upgrade T-28 for qf769 as qff silver. Y to J melb-perth, first time in the new J class. 8/8/16!

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

3) Also with the Classic Upgrade rewards you an opt-in ahead of time to be upgraded at the airport (cannot request at the airport if not done ahead of time) but you must be travelling on an eligible fare (eg saver fare not sale fare). You can opt-in by ticking the box when you initially register for an upgrade which gives you another chance to upgrade on points if your request didn't already clear the day prior.

You would generally not know until the flight has closed for checkin T-45min to T-60mins as you may only get on if they have commercial no shows.

A lot of people think they have opted in when they haven't so they won't be in the running on the day. It's too late to do it on the day at the airport if you haven't opted in ahead of time. Commercial pax (even NB's) would still be upgraded ahead of any staff on leisure travel as they have a higher priority.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Just did my first flights on the new(ish) SYD-SFO route. I paid for Y+ (on sale) and very happily got points upgrades to business in both directions. I'm now at PS and both came through dead on 24 hours beforehand. Was in the upstairs J section going over and it was full, coming back I was downstairs and there were still half a dozen or so empty seats. This was my first time trying for points upgrades so very happy to be successful, if somewhat surprised!

I got the same upgrade from a Y+ sale fare a while back (posted earlier in the thread) though I got SG status after arriving in SFO, so was SG for the return trip. It was also my first time applying for points upgrades. However I found the J cabin was full in both directions. I was downstairs on the flight over and upstairs on the flight back. Used the CX lounge in SFO and it was fantastic.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Applied for & got a points upgrade for QF8 Sunday 14/8, PE to J. I'm a Qantas Club member, made silver 12/8 & the upgrade came through mid afternoon 13/8.
J cabin was 50% full, I'm sure the light loading was the reason I got to step up.

Very happy with flight / service / seat.
