Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Perhaps because there are two of us flying together. We got the window and the middle.
For some strange reason QF tends to seat people on the same itinerary together. Mrs Pineapple is used to that middle seat with Pineapple at the window. For some strange reason Mrs Pineapple likes upgrades.

BTW Several begging emails from QF to bid for upgrade QF 1785 MCY-MEL tomorrow, with minimum cash bid $395. The remarkable frequency of the emails even before the Vic COVID situation unfolded suggested that minimum bid would have got up. Instead I cancelled and avoided MEL!

It’s cruel to get notification of upgrade from BNE to MEL for 27 June but unlikely I’ll make a trip now since greater Melbourne is still a hotspot 🥲

Plenty of time until then, be optimistic. I moved my BNE/MEL flights from this Thursday to next, hopefully things get better there and we can travel.

I’m hoping that’s why I’ve not moved it yet 🤞🏼 They will refund points right if I have to move it? I bought the tickets under the unlimited change campaign.

You'll get full refund. It’s very easy to change / cancel flights with QF these days. Some further ease in restrictions announced today in VIC, good sign.

Upgrade request for Cairns to Melbourne September 12th Approved online for 2 seats requested immediately after booking took advantage of the $154.00 airfares.

Requested upgrades in both directions BNE-ADL for Mrs DMar and I.

FAIL: BNE-ADL, QF663, Thurs 03/06 (requested months in advance, officially denied at T-8).

SUCCESS: ADL-BNE, QF664, Sun 06/06 (requested at T-40, confirmed immediately).

Just mention COVID restrictions. I did this not long ago the day before a booking via MEL, which included an upgrade award, and points were refunded quick smart. Likely the restrictions will have lifted by 27 Jun anyway.

Booked mates rate fares BNE-PER return. Points upgrade submitted for return 11/10, instant confirmation.
Red-e BNE-CNS return. Points upgrade submitted for return 02/01/22, instant confirmation.
Red-e DRW-BNE. Recent change of aircraft to A333. Points upgrades submitted for return 07/08. My flight revenue, bigAl’s classic reward, not confirmed even with 28 J seats. My worry is I might get it but bigAl might not so think I’ll cancel requests.

Looks like I will have to cancel my flights if Qantas does not do it for me; Borders not opened for when I will be going up to BNE on 24 June :(

Spoke to the qantas staff on the platinum line and she confirms that if I change the flight or put flight not credit at this stage, I will have to pay the 5k penalty fee for the upgrade points section but will get the full $amount back even though I stressed that being from greater Melbourne, I will not be able to fly into BNE.

@PineappleSkip , @boomy - did you get that same issue? Do I really have to loose the 5k points if they don't cancel the flight? Thanks for your info/advise on trying to claw back those points

You could check to see if the flight number you booked has been flying in recent days or not. If it hasn’t then there’s a good chance that it will get cancelled.

I agree with mviy. My flight via MEL on Jun 22 has just been changed by Qantas to go via SYD. QF are cancelling flights due to the reduced numbers of passengers. You might be lucky and therefore not be penalised as changes were not acceptable.

No I didn't, and restrictions hadn't even been comfirmed at the time I changed booking. And it's contrary to Qantas advice. I had the premium line, you may have got the wrong call centre. :(

Well I called the premium line though...unless they routed the call to any available 🥲🥲🥲, Might try another time later if they don't cancel the flight

ADL BNE last week - put in offer and got a text to say no but checked when I got to the airport and they said yes

QLD border remains closed to Greater Melbourne for another week starting today so if your flight next Thursday is same day return QF must cancel with no penalty but if your return is later you’ll have to wait for further information from QLD gov. I’m in the same boat btw also booked to fly to MEL on the 24th.

Well, Qantas cancelled the flight I was on 24th over the weekend, which was what I was hoping especially if the borders would not be opening by 24th. Decided to leave it until last minute to accept the refund but looks like QLD is opening the borders to VIC on 25th. Hopped on to the Platinum line (yes checked it was the Platinum line 😉 @PineappleSkip) and they were very happy to help me change the flight cause I said if they could move my flights for me I did not need a refund and if she can points upgrade the flights too if available ... happy days for Qantas....

Anyway, I secured my flights for the same itinerary but one day later leaving Melbourne with no price fare difference. And while I was trying to check a few things, they even put a hold on my seat for the flight and gave me an hour to call back to confirm the booking which was very kind of them.

FYI - Not sure if this applies to everyone, but apparently if Qantas cancels the flights and if you can reschedule travel within 5 days of the original flight date, Qantas will wear the fare difference if there is seats in your fare bucket.

Glad things worked out, told you to be optimistic ;)

My flight tomorrow morning departs as scheduled 🤞
