Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Nor me, either. You just find out when your boarding pass gives you the same economy seat!
Generally the case for me, also - basically left hanging until you walk the plank.

I have had a few occasions though where the sorry text came through between 24-48 hours out to say it wouldn’t be happening. Not what I wanted to see, but in some ways it helps to arrive settled and ready to play it as it lies (or sits bolt upright, as it were).

My last two texts from QF:

Success!

QF11 SYD-LAX tomorrow, WP.

Notification received 7pm (T-26). Very late. I don’t think they processed any upgrades including P1 until this afternoon - was J9 a few hours ago. I think I was the last to be upgraded as I only had a choice of two seats, and the flight is now J1.

Sadly no singles left and only aisle exposed twin seats left - but compared to facing 14 hours in Y I’m not complaining. I went with 2F.

It’s nice to read good news for a change. Congratulations.

Is there anyway to chase up an international upgrade as qantas club ? If there are seats showing available on seat guru and nobody bids will we definitely get them ?

Only a certain number of seats are allocated for upgrades. Even if five J seats are empty after check in, you can argue all you like, but “computer says no”.

If you post flight details and the number of upgrades you are chasing in this thread, linked below, we can help with availability by fare bucket and give you a better look at likelihood:

Also be aware that even if a seat map display shows a seat as being free that does not mean a seat is available. ie some people do not bother assigning their seat. The picture can also change the other way based on things like connections being missed, or in these times unexpected positive covid test results or other reasons not to fly.

Often upgrades will be processed up to the gate for those seats, so you really have no real idea until the door is closed imo.

QF1002 PER-HBA March 12. Successful upgrade Y to J. It’s 7 weeks out: is that a record?

It’s a horrible B737, so I am happy. Mind you, as I usually have a ghost seat in economy and the flight might not be full, Y probably wasn’t a problem. What is the consensus on seats, please? Is row 1 favoured over row 2?

We normally go for Row 2, as there is more leg room, as you can slide your feet under the Row 1 seats.

Domestic upgrades are confirmed instantly if there is U class available.

I actually booked the flight on September 30. That’s possibly too far out for instant upgrade confirmation. From my experience of many domestic upgrade requests, they are not always instant. Some are, but some are also within the last day or two. I reckon QF must know statically that not many people will book J on this run, or any long haul domestic route, for the fare they ask.

I favour row 1, just because I can. It makes me feel more important Also obviates Mrs Pineapple always gets the seat in front reclined into her face. Her face is a seat magnet. Apart from that, no advantage to row 2. Another disadvantage to 1 is that if there is seat back IFE, you have to stow your row 1 screen away on descent.

My consideration for Row 2 - the curvature of the 737 fuselage means my full-size onboard won't stow wheels-in above Row 1 so I choose Row 2 for no other reason than I like to have it immediately above my seat.

BD
