Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

In the end I was too chicken/lazy to call to try to fix this. Glad to see it worked for @jimmy hutspah

Happy to report a QF35 MEL-SIN Y-J upgrade at T-40.

Availability went from J5W0Y0 to J3W0Y2 so looks like two of us skipped W.

I got the Y - W upgrade, which further feeds into my completely speculative theory that if you've chosen to accept a W upgrade if J not available, then they may just upgrade you to W regardless as it frees up another upgrade to someone who has chosen for J only. Next time I won't bother, first time trying the 789 W product, really not that much better than Y if you ask me, particularly on a day flight. its J or bust from hence forth.

I think you may be right - maximise the number of happy campers on gate closing.

But unless you got the W upgrade in advance, and not at the gate, I think it’s a case of ’something is better than nothin’. If you got the W upgrade at more than T-24 … then yep I think I’ll join you in skipping that option.

Success discount Y to J on QF24 tomorrow, am WP. Cleared at around T-27, which seems to be the magic time lately. That’s makes me 3 from 4 success rate for requests on international flights this year.

Failed both directions to SIN last month.
19/3: QF1 SYD-SIN (Y to J or Y+)
25/3: QF52 SIN-BNE (Y to J)

Mrs DMar86 and I are both SG but no luck.

To contrast - I've been upgraded many times to J but never to W on routes that have W as an option, and I always tick that box.

21/04 QF1 SYD-SIN - flex Y-J upgrade just came through about 28 hrs out as SG
Edit: 2 pax, 1 SG, 1 PS

I wonder if being linked to tier 3 business rewards and PC helps?

Probably not - just a fairly light load in J, with 4 seats still available for sale on that flight, post WP1/WP & SG status upgrades. Even some PS and NBs might get a shot! I suspect more are coming back to oz rather than heading out over the coming days.

Flying out of Melbourne on QF35 to Singapore on 29/4. Expert Flyer free account shows 2 seats unassigned and 5 more blocked, while the QF website gives me 3 seats (including one blocked on EF) to pick from when making a booking as a gold in J.

Would you say at less than T80 that those blocked seats are assigned to people who have not selected seats, or does that bode that upgrades might be on the cards for flyers down the back of bus?

Better to post this type of query over here... but responding while I see it - Blocked seats on the seat map are not connected to pending upgrades. You need to look at the numbers to make your assumptions.

There are still at least 6 business seats for sale on Saturday's QF35, and at least 3 of those are in the standard Business fare bucket (D), vs Business Flex (J). Upgrades for CL & WP1 are likely already processed, but those for WP would probably not have been processed yet. I'd look again after T-60 and see how it's going. Quite reasonable chances though, I'd say.

The later flight has the same number of seats available, but all in J flex. They might anticpate more last minute demand on this one, perhaps.

Cheers,
Matt.

Thanks for coming back to me with that intel dairyfloss, and apologises for posting in the wrong group. I had a feeling there was another, but couldn't find it.

Classic Reward Y to J on tomorrow's QF25 SYDHND
- Cleared for me (WP) at ~60h
- Cleared for friend (NB) at ~28h

Seats were J9 at 72h (after WP cleared), J6 at 28h (after NB cleared)

This means I just paid ~100k pts for a J seat to Japan (30.5k Reward Y + 69k Upgrade), which isn't ideal, but it is what it is.

I guess @half-hour and I will be on the same flight tomorrow

I actually posted a bit late, and I'm on the flight tonight, boarding soon.

I noticed the Business Sale fares were still available 2 days before, and that it's the same for my flight on the way back too. Hoping for another upgrade then.

It does seem like these flights must be pretty empty (at least in Business).

Those are some seriously light loads for an allegedly high yielding premium route
Yeah it's quite surprising. For tomorrow;
JL52 is J9, W9, Y9
NH890 is J8, W9, Y9
QF25 is J6, (no W cabin), Y9 (and X9 as well!)
NH880 is J9, W9, Y9

To be fair the Japanese carriers usually have more premium seats on their aircraft, but still.
