Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

I think call 'em. it's probably something with the booking that's in the way. Yes I know thi is very frustrating!

If it helps any it happened to me late last year and I had to call. Resolved no issue - so it was more a technical issue (yep, IT glitch) than policy imo.

as usual why the underlying issues aren't resolved is a whole other issue. good luck.

Is Qantas no longer doing the immediate acceptance of upgrade request now? Made a request for a flight in December to Melbourne (as part of a larger OS trip that is in J) and it's just sitting there. WP.
It's a simply ADL - Mel flight on a Tuesday morning. In December that links with same PNR as flight to Dubai on EK.
Married segments. Been tripped up by that one before, seems upgrading one of the segments requires manual intervention. I have called HBA before and they have fixed it, if you want to buy a ticket in the call centre lottery. I have similar at the moment HND-SYD-BNE on a JL ticket where upgrade requested status despite U seats available. But I’m wary of lottery tickets these days…

QF10 PER-MEL Feb 6th Classic Upgrade reward successful from Y to J at T-28

That's 8 from 8 on PER - East Coast Dreamliner flights since September.

Still at least a dozen empty seats to choose from at T-28

QF10 PER-MEL Feb 13th Classic Upgrade reward successful from Y to J at T-29

9 from 9.

Just 5 empty seats to select from - the lowest number I have seen on these jollys.

QF779 MEL-PER Feb 9th Classic Ugrade on A330 unsuccessful (to remind me I really am just one of the great unwashed)

I ended up calling them just now. All sorted but took a little while for the very helpful operator to speak to someone about it.

QF779 PER-MEL Feb 16h Classic Upgrade reward unsuccessful.

Just don't seem to be able to crack upgrades Westbound, even on the A330's...

Bid upgrade in for QF 435 next Thursday 23/2, $250 on top of a red e-deal fare.
They were asking over 10k points for a classic upgrade. o_O

The pts amount should be standard for the sector. Also, compare that with redeeming for a SYD-MEL (in whY to compare dollar equivalent).

BTW, Classic upgrade requests get processed before cash bids.

Personally can't justify spending 10k points, to pick up 800pts.
Will take the chance on the bid upgrade , for a roughly 95min flight. If it's approved great, if not so be it. :)

That 10k points is the correct amount for discount Y -> J for this sector. As to the value of this I agree it's not there, but this is the normal amount.

the points amounts for upgrades were enhanced a few years back. IIRC it used to be 4k/8k ish for disc/flex -> J. Something like that.

Looks like my new wife and I are out of luck on QF93 tomorrow as Expert Flyer showing all J cabin seats now unavailable.

Will I receive an "unsuccessful" upgrade request text from QF or don't receive anything when its unsuccessful?
if you selected to keep the request for up to the gate then perhaps not. You may still get a text anyway. However yeah you won't get 2 J seats on QF93 tomorrow. sorry.

A question for the experts, much thanks. My flight from DFW to SYD on the J6 and W3 but the seat map shows multiple seats crossed out in J with only 2 available. Which is most likely to be accurate. I am platinum but on a classic reward fare so I expect an upgrade to be unlikely. Expert Flyer does show the 2 seats in economy blocked out so hopefully that sticks, and the flagship first lounge is not bad in DFW at least. Thanks for the help

Hi - do you have your Qantas FF membership number in your EF profile? That will alter the seats that appear available for you when searching QF and OW seat maps. It may change things somewhat in terms of what appears blocked, as it presumes you are bronze without that. Forward rows are not opened up until T-80.

As far as the numbers go, there is at least 6 seats for sale in the business cabin, and 3 seats for sale in the premium economy cabin. Anything more is difficult to determine without an insider's access. You need to presume that multiple people would have upgrade requests in from Y>Y+, Y>J and Y+>J, so that will move things around as it gets closer to the flight date. P1 upgrades can clear from up to a week out, so if you get within a week and the numbers still look like they do above, then it's a relatively level playing field, but others in higher classes or fares, who put in requests earlier, or have a higher PCV could still steal that upgrade away...

Expect the worst, and hope for the best! That's the QF way, when it comes to international upgrades!

Cheers,
Matt.

Thanks, I did put in my QFF number but they remained blue with a x, either way I will reply and let the thread know. Never gone for a classic reward Y upgrade, imagine I am bottom of the cue for WP, but when I booked tickets were 4500 for Y so took the classic reward. Have done well with all paid tickets upgraded in the last year, mostly to J but occasionally W so I can't complain

Upgrade from Y (classic Reward to PE), still showing J1W1. I wonder how far down the pecking order classic reward flights are for upgrades, at one stage it showed J 8, and whether fare class (ie paid vs rewards) trumps status

I’m not sure we know for certain, but general belief seems to be status trumps fare type, however if you have 2 WPs asking for an upgrade from the same class, then fare type (bucket) would likely come into the equation, together with who requested first, and PCV

I have an upgrade request for HND-SYD in April. When I was speaking to HBA last week about another matter, she said that because my upgrade request was made so long ago, and as I am WP, I have a good chance. So early requests do matter.

Yes. All things being equal, the time the request was made would be a determining factor. Allegedly :)

3 days ago I could buy 4 J seats on QF44 DPS-SYD.

Now T-25 flight is J0, 3 seats open unassigned…

Upgrade (as a P1 on a Classic Y award) hasn’t cleared… but no “we’re sorry” sms… yet

EDIT: T-5 J1, 2 seats not yet assigned
