Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

QF71 PER-SIN today. I received the “not successful“ text last night with the caveat that I might be upgraded at the gate. I looked at the flight only to find there was only one J seat left available. However, in the transit lounge 20 minutes prior to boarding I was presented with a new boarding pass: 1A. 🎉 (Actually there was one other rear J seat empty after take off,)

Fingers crossed for the overnight HND-SYD in two weeks’ time.

QF93 today MEL-LAX

Received the unsuccessful upgrade SMS T-11 but got upgraded in the QF F lounge with 2 others.

Data point: Gold Status booked in premium economy.
Were you guested into the Flounge?

not that it's important - just curious :)

congrats on the upgrade and hope you enjoyed the flight!

Could the day of the week be added to posts in this thread (where the real date is not mentioned)
I ask since I have been looking at the DPS-SIN flights and the prebooking into J varies greatly by day of the week (in addition to the school holiday schedules). Wednesdays seem less popular (and better for upgrades?).
Always plan your wandering

Back when QF9/10 were A380 flights I got upgrades to F both ways in November. F was under half full for at least one of those flights I recall.

Flying off peak season and via MEL was the best chance way to do it back then. Sadly that’s not possible now.

I’m seeking some advice please

I put in an upgrade request from Y to J for MEL-SIN when it was an A330 without a W cabin. I selected the ‘upgrade at gate’ option. Now the flight is scheduled with a 789 with a W cabin, should I cancel my request and resubmit it considering the ‘upgrade at the gate’ option will now have an option to accept a W upgrade as well? The flight is essentially sold out except for J, I suspect because the 789 has so fewer Y seats.

I’m WP - so usually pretty good strike rate for upgrades. I just don’t want to get excluded for a technicality because I haven’t accepted a W upgrade option, because there wasn’t one at the time I made the request.
In the end I was too chicken/lazy to call to try to fix this. Glad to see it worked for @jimmy hutspah

Happy to report a QF35 MEL-SIN Y-J upgrade at T-40.

Availability went from J5W0Y0 to J3W0Y2 so looks like two of us skipped W.

7 April BNE-PER Classic reward Y to J about 24 hours prior. PER-SIN No upgrade Y to J. 9 April Sin - Sydney QF 82 Classic Reward Y to J at T-36 as WP.
Only 1 failed upgrade since covid reopening (but 2 were Y to PE, 4 to J)
