Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

While no substitute for a lay flat I’ve flown SYD-LHR / LHR-SIN in Y+ QF (upgrade from Y) and as someone that can’t usually sleep in Y (despite only being 5’4) I found I was able to get some decent sleep due to the extra recline and extra seat width. I also enjoyed the improved F&B and smaller cabin meaning more attentive service. I personally think it’s worth the points, and would happy put mine again to Y+ if J was not an option.

Agree, I think Y+ is worth the points, although I'm not sure I'd pay dollars for it. One further case for paid Y+ though is increased chances of a J upgrade.

I do wonder if ticking the Y>Y+ box reduces the chances of a J upgrade. Have seen cases of getting a T-20 Y+ upgrade while others get a J upgrade at the gate.

Seems next to no chance for silver down status to gain point upgrades to reading this thread for long while.

SG borderline.

QF do market the possibility of point upgrades heavily, but with no status neigh on impossible for international. Right?

My NB daughter got a successful classic reward Y+ to J upgrade in 2022 SYD-YVR

I put in the request as WP but wasn’t on the booking so not sure what priority applied

Bronze. Only P1 adds some sort of priority to requests - but they are still assessed at the same wmtime as others of the same status level.

Still, that was a great upgrade for her to get :)

My wife and I were both on a paid J tickets and her sister on a classic rewards J all separate bookings linked together so maybe they saw that and kept us all together.

The CR bookings were when Alan Joyce released a whole bunch as an apology

Was a fun flight.

Hi all

If I make a change to a ticket, for an un-change sector do i need to cancel and resubmit the upgrade request?

It is still showing as “upgrade requested” however its under T48 and no sms. (Greedy I know)

I am not quite sure what you mean.

Are you saying you have an upgrade request in for a flight, but you changed another flight in the booking?

If so, you do not need to change the request.

Yep exactly. Another flight was disrupted and reissued on another airline, this flight is same booking and unchanged, but post-reticketing.

I had to go back and check this because I was under the assumption that it was the requesting member's priority. I have previously requested for 'family members' and they had their upgrade confirmed ~7 days prior to the international flight... then again, I am a P1!

From the Qantas Classic Upgrade Rewards page:

If you are not travelling but want to use your points to request an upgrade for an eligible family member, the upgrade will be awarded according to the eligible family member's priority, not the status of the Qantas Frequent Flyer whose points are being used. An exception is made when Platinum One members (who aren’t travelling) redeem points for an upgrade on behalf of eligible family members. In this case the eligible family members will enjoy a higher priority.

QF9 MEL-PER, Y to J, T-58 hours.
When I flew PER-MEL in Y, the J cabin was full, but there was at least one spare seat in every section of every row down the back. I therefore had my ghost seat. I’m sure I am given the same meal anyway, just metal cutlery instead of bamboo!

Booked a one-way Y flight CNS-MEL today on a red-e deal.
QF703 on June 1 and saw that the aircraft is an A330-200 so submitted a points upgrade for 27.5k points and it was accepted within half an hour.
a good two and a half months before travel. Knowing my luck it will substituted for a 738.
my QF Gold will expire at the end of June 😢

Not mid week, unfortunately. I did tick Y+/W fallback but I wonder if that is worthwhile? I haven't travelled premium economy before -- is it really any more comfortable than standard Y? (I'm not tall and benefit if there's greater recline, but don't benefit from extra legroom).
It’s the seat width, not legroom that makes all the difference. Legroom/pitch is overrated.

No upgrade result at T-10. I'm not holding my breath, but is this what it looks like when they do gate upgrades, if at all?

I have had good success as an SG on QF1/QF2 (SYD/LHR) and misc SYD/SIN legs. On QF1/2 it's been half PE and half J upgrades from Y flex fares. Y Sale or Saver fares might make it harder, though.

My most recent non-upgrade but an increase in comfort was on QF36 a few months back where on their own initiative the Y supervisor moved me from a window seat to an empty middle row of four seats. A decent lie-flat sleep instead of snoozing in a two-seat config. This was an a WP but nice little things can sometimes happen at the back even if you missed out on a cabin upgrade. If ExpertFlyer shows empty rows in Y right before the flight closes, it might be worth asking for a seat change.
