Qantas Wine latest offering

He picked up a case of 6 of the 389 2010's from his local Dan Murphys (where he is a regular and they know him), but paid way over the odds ($73 per bottle IIRC - same price I paid for the St Henri through EpiQure). Still, he's happy he has 3 of each now. Cellaring time...
I can't see the 2010 Bin 389 on the DM website :(
Will check another DMs probably tomorrow for that to maybe join my St Henri..

Just make sure you get the 2010 as reputedly Dans have stock of the 2009 as well!

Yes, it definitely is the 2010 - I got the wooden box and have checked the bottles... what do you think of the 2009?

Various bonus point offers this month with wine starting at $16.99 per bottle with 2000 bonus points for a case of 12.

Any chance that epiQure could recognise that it has members that don't live in SYD or MEL let alone NSW or VIC and put on some events elsewhere in the country. BNE would be nice :), especially as the next event, 'Truffle, Butter and Wine', looks good.

Saw the 2010 Bin 389 for ~$72 in a mixed half dozen and ~$75 single bottle price at another DMs.
Also enquired about the 2010 St Henri and they said they will be getting more stock on the weekend but they are limiting purchases to 2 per customer. They aren't given many (no more than 4x six packs) so it looks like there will be more stock coming soon...

For those still after it, Winebox warehouse still has the St Henri 2010 in stock for $75, they have the Bin 389 as well at roughly the same price however I posted the 1st choice link for 389 as they were showing it in stock for a bit cheaper.

Winebox warehouse are sold out of the 2010 St Henri and 1st Choice are out of the 2010 Bin 389 (you linked to the 2011 Bin 389 FWIW)..

Hopefully those after it were able to grab some of the Winebox warehouse stock. Jim's Cellars still has limited stock at $85, they also show the 2007 which is a cracker as well IMO. Search Results

Yes linked 2011 389 as it is the current vintage.

Dan Murphy's 1300 number told me no more stock is available and that they are not getting anymore however Queensland still has some stock. The girl also said the website correctly displays store stock, not sure if I believe that though.

I just submitted an order with Dan Murphy's online store - fingers crossed it goes through!

It was available online only for $72.90/bottle if bought in an order of 6 bottles or more. Standard delivery was the only option, even in-store pick up was greyed out.

As I thought, can't trust what the girl on the 1300 Dan Murphy's number told me as it is available online again. With my cash back of 11% and further 5% with wish gift card it brings it down to $61.23 a bottle....maybe I should add some more to the collection.

Have only tested the 2009 rather than had a serious consideration. Personally I have given up buying Penfolds generally, not because they aren't good wines, they are but they have long since stopped (IMO) being good value for money except in exceptional circumstances. The St. Henri in my opinion is such an exceptional wine whereas the 2009 is just a good-very good wine but costing twice the price of other just as good-very good wines.

Being one of my favourite wines, Penfolds St Henri, based on past vintages I have tried and some of which I still have, I am very disappointed with the 2010 vintage and extremely surprised with all the fanfare. Yes we all have different palates however I can't see my 19 remaining bottles of the 2010 vintage ever improving. Maybe I just had an off palate night and a second bottle in a few more days will prove me wrong however I have grave reservations. At the moment my best Shiraz find in a long time the FU Barossa Shiraz 2008 smashes it out of the ball park. Lucky I bought some more of this a few days ago as it appears it is now gone (cached link below if you want to see what I am referring to). I am sure there are those of you who love it but at this price I think a try before you buy (probably a bit hard now) warrants. Interested to hear if anyone else was underwhelmed.

Each to their own I say, I and probably 99% of my wine loving friend ( some might use a different name) won't go near GWD, but if it works for you then go for it. If you don't like the 2010 would suggest there are plenty people on the secondary market who'll take it off you!

Yes indeed each to their own. I will see how a second bottle goes before I fully commit to final opinion. Being a highly rated vintage I think i will be able to offload in the years to come if I wish. I'll store it away and try another bottle in a few years and who knows.

With all respect, won't go near GWD attitude will not get you very far if that attitude also carries across to other discount sites. I try and buy wine from everywhere; Cellar Door, Auction, Epiqure, Vinomofo, GWD, Distributors, Liquidators and Retail. I fully understand your reservations but buying one bottle of a few things can help you find something outstanding such as the 2008 FU Shiraz. Of course some of the other things I have tried along the way from GWD in coming across this are average. Current example of that is the 2011 Viking Shiraz which does not stack up against the 2010 Viking Shiraz. The Viking Shiraz grapes used to go into Grange. GWD has a few current wines that have won trophies in international shows, not medals but trophies, one being a Luchador Inferno Cab Sauv for a budget sapping $9.99 (12 bottle buy) that again shames the Seppelt Moyston a lot of us bought in an Epiqure special deal and also a lot of other Cab Sauv's I have drunk recently. Ignore at your own peril I say. Even one of my St Henri vintages I picked up at $45 a bottle from a discount site that Penfold's (TWE) supposdely don't do.

From what point of view did you find the disappointing? What didn't you like about it?

I just purchased a box of 2010 from Penfolds @ Magill. OK so it was $80 a bottle but at least I got some without driving around all over town.
Whilst there I also purchased 18 bottles of Thomas Hyland @ 50% off ($12.50 ea). Yes you can buy this at DM for ~ $18 but at the Penfolds price I think this is exceptional drinking.

Yep not far to drive. We used to live on the road below Penfold Road (Edgcumbe Tce) and I remember going with my father to get some Romalo sparkling from the cellar on the cnr of The Parade. That was a while ago.

A bit of an extrapolation to suggest that because I dont buy from GWD I dont buy from a whole heap of other places (because I do buy from many of the places you mention). But GWD has this ability to spruik that I find most unappealing and their track record of selling wine with trophies (from Timbuctoo maybe) which then taste like cough is one I dont like much, and neither do many of the other wine buffs I know. Its an opinion I know but one shared by many that GWD are very misleading, using wrong years to advertise wines and offshore wine shows (if the wines are so great why have they not been submitted to an Australian wine show) being but one example. And in your last sentence it's just possible that Penfolds know a little better than your auction site which wines they make.

You mention Viking, is it just possible you bought the 2011 because GWD sold it as just as good as the 2010? Because that is after all their modus operandi. PS. Yes I do know the wine but no I didnt buy the 2011 because I rely on the advice of others than GWD. And I agree Epiquire is expensive.
