QF International via Darwin

Fingers crossed for you. I have an awesome RTW redemption for September but I am already 99% convinced it won't happen.
Reckon Europe and America leg's will be fine, Asia will be hard and may still have testing/quarantine issues.

My route has lots of very short stops and transfers, a week in Jaffna, a fortnight in Iran and a train across Tokyo. I cannot afford to get stopped through testing positive somewhere and cannot afford the $ to do testing even if I could live with a positive test.

That was via Dubai, or earlier, via HKG.

When the 787 via Perth appeared, it actually caused the loss of most of the QF Europe passengers from Melbourne. Run it from Perth by all means, as the passengers from there had no effect on the loads of the 1 and 9. Most of us were surprised that they didn’t keep one of the 380s going via Dubai with the other to Singapore. A loop made some sort of sense.
and as a person who actually wants to go to Dubai, it is now (and even was pre-COVID) very expensive and not as good as it used to be.

My QF return leg in April is still showing via SIN, with outbound via DRW. It will be interesting to see whether this remains, or DRW continues as the watering hole on the return leg.

If I was flying anywhere but the UK, then SIN would be my preferred in these post-HKG days. The Bunnik video reminded my what a great airport it is. MrsOatek is not keen on transiting in the ME, so options are going to be limited.

I wonder if the WA covid legacy will hold back the QF9/10 return to PER?

Perth, closely followed by Darwin, would be my last choice for a transit port. Singapore is one two and three.
I assume this relates to on the ground efficiency as well as preferred place (city) for layover? Or are there other reasons as well?

Ignoring the fact that Qantas can sell AU-SIN and SIN-LHR flights individually, I wonder what the cost difference between the two are.

One would assume staff costs might be cheaper given they already have QF ground staff at DRW, likewise I suspect they're getting a rather sweet deal in DRW from the airport but perhaps this is all offset by extra fuel carriage?

Has anyone had recent experience with a domestic only leg on QF1/9, SYD or MEL to DRW?
If the old JQ35/36 is anything to go by, my guess is that your passport is required and the orange D sticker issued on the BP.
Not sure what getting out at DRW would entail, I suspect there would be no/little customs checks..

Could it be done with bus transfers? So domestic pax SYD-DRW could go to a domestic gate in SYD and be bused to the plane, and then disembark to a bus at DRW and be taken to a domestic arrival gate?

The orange D sticker is required but honestly the airports are empty at those times. In DRW it is very straight forward - you'll be at the baggage claim before the bags are its that fast.

Yes I had an orange sticker on my boarding pass but the officer at DRW returned it to me instead of retaining it...

Thanks all, was thinking of picking this flight for the F lounge - only because it's been so long since I used it!

Forgot to add that driver's licence suffices for photo ID
Does that mean they have a person checking ID/BP, in addition to the automated passport scanning kiosk?
Last time I flew internationally from MEL and SYD, they only had the kiosk.

Yes I had to join the manual queue and they sighted my photo ID before putting a "Departed Australia" stamp on the orange sticker...

Does anyone know of a recent review or recount of the QF Long haul experience (in J) recently?

I've got QF2 / QF9 coming up soon and was interested in what I needed to plan on bringing - do things like PJs still get given out, or is it best to plan ahead and BYO?
