Kill me now.

Optus can barely manage a mobile network, and their mobile data services and terrible customer service are why I switched to the big T three years ago. ...
That's a little cute. :-|

There's a large difference between providing a decent WiFi service in a lounge and a a mobile 'phone network.

The main difference being a 12 year old can set up a WiFi hotspot.

Slightly off topic, but I am sitting in the Melbourne First Class Lounge of the world's only investment grade airline completely unable to connect to the wifi. I hit the connect button and the page reloads with the same connect button. Fortunately my wireless broadband is working!
Have you bookmarked and tried the link that bypasses the connect button posted earlier in this thread?

I tried that, but didn't work for me. :(

Re: Qantas domestic Lounges pathetic wifi

It probably did actually work.

I suspect you got something like:

Error in big text

If so, then it worked and you just start surfing. ;)

Nope. Just returns to the same connect page. :-| I wondered if it had connected so opened up another window....and was faced with the same connect page.

Oh, well - I was describing what happened yesterday in CBR.

Lets hope the Optus connection is much better ...

Not at all. I was just expressing a view that I don't believe Optus could provide a wifi service better than what we have now in the QP, based on 10yrs of past experience with their services and products.

And yes, a 12yr old can set up a wireless network Liam - but to run enterprise grade wifi services you need people who understand how data is used, how to correctly set them up, monitor for problems and provide maximum coverage for little hassle. Again, I don't think Optus is much chop (not that Telstra are angels here, they should be genuinely embarrassed by the shoddy state of QP wifi).

i can only go on our usage of Optus for fixed line data for the last several years, plus the WiFi they are already deploying hotspots. Again it is a separate operation from the mobile network.

Re: Qantas domestic Lounges pathetic wifi

I have to be honest and say that the internet service in AU (mobile & broadband) is lagging well behind other parts of the world. Not sure of the state of broadband roll-out these days, but the very fact that McLaren Vale - 30mins outside Adelaide is still relying on dialup (as are some other areas) shows how *uncommitted* any of the telcos are to providing a service these days.

On my most recent visit to ADL, I was sitting outside a well know coffee shop that advertises (Insert Brand Here) Wireless Hotpot - and I couldn't access the entire 2 hours I was there; either no connection at all, or it was so slooooooow it couldn't have loaded a simple 404 page, let alone a page with any imagery.

Woeful! Telstra simply didn't come up with the goods, as attested by many here on AFF, (not including those flyers who visit from OS and those who aren't members).

I'll wait and see what Optus brings to the table before giving an opinion - they may be better, they may be the same, they may be worse. Until it's implemented though, I'll give them the chance to prove themselves, before throwing bouquets or brickbats at them.

That you are right, I've got somewhat limited experience with Enterprise scale WiFi, but my understanding is that it constantly needs to be tweaked.

Optus have free WiFi in Sydney T2, I've only used it twice, and it worked well. Small, limited sample size, but, maybe they do know what they are doing?

There is actually an NBN trial site relatively close to Mclaren Vale in Willunga. I don't know exactly when additional sites around there will commence, but the rollout is underway. Remember it is a 10 year project though, so it may be some time before you have proper broadband ... or broadband at all by the sounds of it. I know what it's like - I spent 10 months in Bendigo last year. Others that were working there with me on the project that were on 3, Voda or Optus wireless may as well have had nothing. Even my Telstra NextG Ultimate card was only getting about 1mbps and I was living about 4km from the centre of town.

Archphoto, You probably would have been eligible for a subsidised service under the National Broadband Guarantee but this was discontinued by the current government on June 30th - ensuring those affected need to wait up to 10 years before they can again have access to such speed via NBN - (although 4G is looking better and better - maybe you won't need to worry about an NBN).

Anyhoo - this is getting off topic ...

I am currently sitting in the MEL J lounge, getting 550 kB/s - faster than at home over an ADSL2 connection!

They must have fixed the problem

In PER currently, lounge is 90% full - but strangely the wireless is playing ball and very responsive. Only complaint is that it took an age to login via the Roman abacus.

Someone must have had a word with Telstra on account of the Rockpool lunch attendees all flying today ;)

Re: Qantas domestic Lounges pathetic wifi

Forgot (or couldn't be bothered) to try it on my most recent trips this week. I usually just head for the Macs and their dirty white keyboards and mousewheels that only go in one direction - anyone else notice this? Used them in SYD, BNE and TSV this week and every one of them had the same problem. Scroll down but not up? Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Re: Qantas domestic Lounges pathetic wifi

In the SYD J lounge today about the time the AFF 16 were hobnobbing it and the Wifi was very good.

That's a common fault with the Apple Mighty Mouse. I ended up replacing mine with the Magic Mouse (with the touch surface for scrolling). The Magic Mouse is awesome!

Re: Qantas domestic Lounges pathetic wifi

I can't remember (and don't want to go back to see) who posted that it was moving to Optus, but this fact was straight up confirmed yesterday at the QFF Lunch.

Full roll-out of Optus services to lounges expected to be completed before end of Q1 2012.
