QR withholding award seats from Qantas?

Last time I checked it was ~158k something for bne to europe through doh? How much effort does it take to get 100k avios?
Can't even search for flights or use the points calculator for the doh to europe leg.

yes, Business.

Pom, please tell me you just quoted QF points for a RETURN flight on Qatar ( Business class).

For a moment there, I fell off my chair thinking you were quoting points for one way.
OZ to LHR for eg, one way business is 159k QFF

For you it might be, when comparing its 85k avios points (business class) from OZ to LHR.
How did you acquire your Avios? My QFF points come from a combination of flying and CC sign up bonuses, in the case of the latter, the cost of obtaining the QFF points was very low.

Comparing Avios to QFF points is not comparing apples with apples because Avios are difficult to earn for most Aussies.

Amex to Marriot points transfers ( as long as there is a promotional bonus). I also purchase the points during promotional offers . However, their is potential for devaluation when transferring the points across to Avios ( 3:1). Anyways, always look out for the promotional offers .

I do agree with you that accumulating QFF is probably cheaper but look at what they get you on Qatar?. You can hardly use them.

I have FINALLY found plenty of availability for next year on Qatar (not via QF) through privilege club.

I rather use my purchased points knowing I will get availability

The above discussion has highlighted something to me.

This move is actually a huge positive for savvy points collectors because it has removed the major source of competition for QSuite awards into and out of Australia — Qantas points collectors.

If you are savvy enough to know how to collect Avios en masse, you now have free reign to pick pretty much whatever flight you want. Award availability on Qatar has gone from practically non-existent to completely open.

It has, essentially, doubled or even tripled the value of Avios collecting in Australia.

A few years ago, I used a mob called Vente Privee, a French merchandise site, Veepee - Accueil which occasionally had sales of Avios at excellent prices (at a time FX was good, too). Had to have an address in France, but hey ...

That was when I loaded up on Avios. Since then its been from crediting OneWorld flights first to BA as of abt a year ago and now QR.

Not only QR. Pre Covid, I found I could get last-minute QF domestic J seats for BA Avios even when they weren't available via QFF. I assumed that BA Executive Club were paying QF more for the award seats than QFF.

This is a disgrace that QR are doing this for fellow OW airlines even if it is Qantas...
What goes around comes around and QF are getting a taste of their own medicine.
For far too long we have been punished by QF for daring to travel on OW partners and now it seems the table has turned.
Of course for those of us with a stack of VA points or have switched to Avios it’s a bit of cream on top 🤣
QR currently doing a 30% bonus on points transfers too so I think I’ll take them up on the offer and shift a stack of my Accor points over

Cancelled out by adding (allegedly) 10 million VA members however.

Not entirely.

Velocity points are harder to earn at the rate of Qantas points. Also fewer people chase Velocity points en masse than Qantas points collectors.

And Velocity only get seats 330 days in advance, giving Avios holders a clear 25 days without any competition from Australian points collectors.

Given you can currently collect Avios at about $AUD0.0035 per point through US credit cards, that makes a return QSuite award ticket Australia-Europe cost about $1500 ($630 for 180K points + ~$900 in taxes) — cheaper than economy. Add on fantastic award availability and this withholding has made Avios collecting the find of the year for me!

OT but… The credit card signups and earn rates are broadly the same, plus there are partner airline, wine, energy, telco, supermarket, fuel, rental car, hotel and online store partnerships, so I would dispute that VA points are harder to earn.

Which Velocity card regularly offers 130K+ sign up bonuses like Amex, 160K+ like ANZ and 90K+ like NAB?

The only banks I can think of that offer comparable Velocity bonuses are Citibank and Westpac Group - mostly around the 70-80K range.

The best way to think of it is this:

QFF points are like the Zimbabwean Dollar. Everybody is a millionaire but they are not worth the paper they are printed on.

Joycey got into a c*ck size contest with Al Bakar. He had a lot to lose, he lost, and now he is reaping what he sowed.

Amex currently has a 160k offer going until November 16th
Citibank currently has a 100k offer too
