Rex in voluntary administration, ending all 737 services

I was not aware VA didn’t have spirits in the lounge.

I’m surprised more people don’t complain about that, it would be a dealbreaker for me.
It's a deal-maker for me. If it saves the airline a few $$$ then that's a good thing.

I think I can live without spirits. We have had an unopened bottle of Bacardi in the house for several years and no one has touched it . But YMMV.

Spirits are generally no more expensive than packaged beer, and has a much longer shelf life so there’s very little wastage.

I think since the collapse of VA1 and the resurrection in the form of the low cost/hybrid cost VA2 the amount of FF’ers on here flying VA2 has decreased significantly, just isn’t as much conversation about them as used to be pre-COVID on AFF.

What an odd thing to think/say. Have the number of AFFers flying VA2 compared to VA1 really decreased significantly? 🤷‍♂️

A satisfied customer doesn't usually say much. A dissatisfied customer will vent and complain. So I think the "lack of VA2 posts index" might need a bit of work.

I would say it’s not AFF but Australia as a whole.

In case you didn’t realise, VA’s current customer base is for value and leisure oriented travellers. It’s a narrowbody budget airline with lounges, an FF program and generous baggage allowance.

People have realised that they can pay just a little more and get an actual full service experience, or pay a little less and get an actual budget airline, so no wonder the size of VA’s customer base has reduced.

Thanks. Can always rely on you to tell us what VA is, what Rex is, what Alliance is and so on. <redacted>.

The cheapest VA fare in Y is a carry-on only fare, the same as JQ.

VA as previously stated is a hybrid Low Cost Carrier with 2 rows of Recliners with Meals (same as their nearby rivals Batik Air Indonesia and Batik Malaysia on select international services) with a FF program and limited domestic lounge services.

Well, someone at Virgin seems to have taken notice, as the wait time for me this morning was half a second. Talk about consistency.
As someone who travels approximately once a week on VA, I've not waited more than a few seconds to enter one of the lounges. If it's busy with staff, there are also the auto scan machines at the busy lounges.

That’s not borne out by market share stats. Virgin is consistently around 30 percent of the market.

Are you disputing my assertions?

Maybe you could elaborate and tell us why you think VA isn’t just a narrowbody budget airline with a small lounge network, generous baggage allowances and an FF program?

VA is Rex but with a widely recognised FF program. In fact Velocity is the only thing preventing VA2 from a Rex-style failure.

Agree. Whilst the J clients on VA may have gone down since going downmarket as 2.0, VA 2.0 has held their own on the Y market at least, thus the consistent 30%+ market shares in every reporting period.

Whilst it is what you say I would say that in J VA offer a superior product to QF in some areas and not in others but at a considerable price difference as a rule.
Both airlines have their positives and negatives but generally speaking I’ve had far more good experiences than bad ones on VA

I think there will always be a market for people who dislike the Spirit of Australia, or who like challenger brands.

Qantas also appreciate VA existing as it a) stops regulators being all over them, and b) blocks a properly capitalised entry by another international airline.

Rex didn’t have the funds to compete with VA but their logic if VA collapsed was sound. Thats how VA came into existence.

I think @clifford was referring to the call centre, but otherwise I'd second your experiences with lounges.

By that logic BA/Lufthansa/KLM/the US majors could be classed budget airlines. Plenty of full service airlines have restrictive fare types. And if you're applying that logic, you could call Rex a budget airline too!
