Rex in voluntary administration, ending all 737 services

I like the Rex lounges. I always use them on PP when I fly JQ, so I'll be really sad if they get the chop. Haven't been to the ADL one, but am a regular in SYD and MEL and sure they're old but comfortable and the food/snacks are decent. It beats buying something outside or sitting in the terminal, and it's a quiet place to take a call or do some work. +1 to the wraps in MEL.

The Rex lounge reminded me of a country town motel reception from the 1990s.
And it is visual eyesores like this that underscores how a few people want to hold our country back from any meaningful progress. Rex, as their name suggests, is a Rex - a dinosaur.

Any subsidy given to Rex in the name of “regional lifeblood support” will only ensure that these “lounges” continue operating. For the sake of progress we need to let the dinosaur go extinct.

Many people in country towns complain with the NIMBY attitude when city-style elements such as proposals for new suburbs or futuristic business precincts in their town affect their “beloved tightly knit community” - yet it’s somehow OK for the country camp to take up space in the busiest metropolitan airports in our continent for a vastly unused “lounge” resembling a 1990s country motel reception?

Would still beat the disgraceful SYD J lounge that our National carrier provides. It’s not fit for a third world airport

1 week today, the need to have their engines run or they will go into deep storage. Doesn’t look like it’ll happen with the blocks there
Often a nightmare for any leasing company, generally need an engineering check before handing over to any new customer, even if the engineering log is in order.

Can be anywhere from 6-12 months post any administration period before they start ops again.

Have to say, having been to lounges in the third world, the QF J lounge is excellent. Back to REX failing.

It’s the usual anti-QF BS that is complete nonsense.

Rex didn’t even have spirits or proper coffee (pods only), and only packaged food.

I used to get lounge access at BWT in the past. I think it was owned by the airport and not Rex but basically only Rex passengers used it. I got in only because I had treated a family member of the Airport Manager. It was just as good as the then QF lounge at DPO.

Somehow, I think the quality of the food or coffee on offer in the Rex Lounge, had very little to do with the demise of their jet services, other than perhaps as a symbol for lack of investment in marketing and brand.

As mentioned above, not all lounges are the same. MEL had unboxed wraps. And the ‘packaged’ food in SYD is actually fresh as well. Just in a box. The pointhack article is actually pretty complimentary of the food offering, and I agree!

‘proper coffee’ is a matter of preference. Do i want to stand for 10 mins waiting, or have it ready to go?

I'm sure the "country hospitality" which includes '90s country hostel-style lounges, the retention of the ancient brand identity and the childish, unprofessional logo will not and did not go down well on metropolitan routes in a wealthy, forward-thinking, urbanised nation. People did not want to be associated with this brand. Of course, Rex's heart isn't really in the country, it's in Singapore and HKG, but that's another matter. Rex had the golden opportunity in 2020 to rebrand to Ansett, just like how Ampol was brought back from the dead after 20 years, but Sharp's arrogance and country obsession have rightfully cost them dearly.

I feel like we’ve had this argument before.

In any case you can have an automated espresso machine with real beans vs whatever passes for “coffee” in a tin foil pod. It is what you’d expect in a motel room, not an airline lounge.

In any case, one thing you can count on is fresh wraps and sandwiches in the QP, sometimes that’s all that’s on offer but it is fresh, made to order (by you).

The Rex lounges are dire and I’ve mentioned that many times but I kind of expect them from them. I don’t however expect a so called J lounge in SYD to be an absolute disgrace or the even worse HBA lounge from a airline that normally has pretty decent lounges

You literally said the Rex lounge would still beat QF’s.

So your own experience in a Rex lounge is what this post is based on. I suspect not.
And what makes you think that a Rex lounge should be as good as those of an airline that has 65% of the domestic market?

Wasn't Rex striving for 33% of the domestic market in 2020 when they thought VA would collapse?

Arguably a rebrand to something like Ansett, and investment in those "lounges" would have helped increase that market share and pose a genuine threat to VA.

Perhaps Sharp might have realised that magically worshipping the dinosaur identity in the sky from his acreage, doing absolutely nothing to resonate with a urban travelling customer base, didn't do them any favours.
