(rumour) QFi to withdraw from Perth

Whether it's PER or elsewhere how can CX, SQ, EK et al keep on finding the business case to increase capacity to Oz, while the diminishing QFi can't?
I just don't get it
Because they all fly to their (single) home port and have networks to feed into. Unless Qantas can feed into the same networs then they are left with point to point traffic which doesn't justify the number of flights others have into cities like Perth.

How come I could choose to fly QF to the US knowing that I will have to get on another airlines planes to fly anywhere other than NYC and don't have a problem with that (and nor do QF have a problem flying me there), but I would have a big issue flying QF to the ME somewhere and then jumping on another carriers plane to be connected through to multiple European and African destinations? That's without them thinking out-of-the-box at all and establishing a hub there to fly a few of their own planes on to selected destinations other than just LHR and FRA... When i flew QR from DOH to ATH i recall it was only about 3 hours and on an A320 so no gas guzzling, uneconomical 747-400s etc... Although with Europe in the doldrums taking the next step from the ME to more European destinations isn't probably the right time...

Yes QF don't have a huge amount of competition on the trans-pacific network but they probably didn't have from the ME carriers either until a few years ago and now those carriers are adding more flights every couple of months because QF have been no where in Perth internationally (or Adelaide etc), offering no new routes or services and cutting back??? Its a bit late to start having lots of bright ideas after you have routinely been kicking own goals and your competition have started eating your lunch for you...

There lack of advertising in Perth? Well that is completely down to their own incompetence and lack of investment, they had a better brand and history and story to tell in Perth than any of the other competitors and chose to let it dwindle....

When QF rescheduled the 0900 SIN-PER flight to 2330 I just resigned myself to having to book the 1930 departure that much further in advance. I decided I would NOT fly on the 2330 departure to PER. But I have also made no secret that I book the route ONLY exSIN. And the flights I have been on have not shown very many empty seats. Perhaps more on the PER-SIN direction.
So far my infrequent looks at MH fares have shown no bargains. Perhaps I will be reduced to using CX Y+ via TPE, at least TPE has inexpensive business class to the USA. Alas CX economy fares (unless purchased in the USA) don't fit well with the AA FF program.
I would hope that UL will be offering interesting fares and will include PER as well as MEL on the their wish list from CMB.

The real issue is that the PER airport is not useful for international / domestic connections. Nor do the typical QF (and j*) economy fare classes post well to many of their OW partners.

I think I'll happily wander head off to the PPrune discussion.

With the US for the most part you would be changing to an AA aircraft, in a generally seamless manner often ticketed or code shared through. If you flew to Dubai as it stands you don't have the seamless connection and from a ticketing perspective it would be heaps cheaper to fly Emirates all the way. So there is a major difference, clearly a code share/profit share type arrangement would allow through selling of tickets.

As for Qantas setting up a hub elsewhere, that was their plan with Red Q, but frankly that would only work within Asia. Simply because you wouldn't be able to bring in enough passengers to distribute to wide bodies. The incumbants (SQ, TG, CX etc) can do it because they are brining in people from 50-100 destinations and then funnelling them out, whereas Qantas would have maybe 5 Australian and 5-20 Asian destinations. Going futher afield as it seems you are suggesting would certainly not work as you would have to use a wide body a/c which means even more numbers.

If QF pull out of Per internationally that will be the end of my relationship with them... I doubt it though as their Per-Sin flights are always full and they have a deal with BA to fly into Per.

Our company is in the process of finding a corporate travel agent. As a way of comparison we asked the shortlisted candidates to, among other things, quote on PER-SIN in J. Quotes for SQ were 1.5-2k cheaper pp than QF. It seems QF are more interested in publicly complaining how hard it is to survive rather than trying to compete. As it stands, all my international flights ex PER in recent memory have been SQ or CX.

OT but interestingly none of the prices beat AMEX Cent pricing for SQ

The way things are headed, in five years when WA has seceded, Perth may well be the only "international" destination served by Qantas.

Possible, but I read that as more of a "get on with it" message to the airport itself.

Just part of the Virgin playbook. Still, if QF were thinking of withdrawing from PER (and we'll likely find out at around Aug 23), they may have a rethink.

Wasn't that same date in the news last year for some QF announcement which was about withdrawing from routes such as BOM?

Yep, generally coincides with their profit (if any) announcements....

(IIRC, The rumour mill was a bit off last year)

Perhaps we will see QF link running A319s internationally ex PER, certainly big changes at QFLink ops at present, gearing up for something jet wise.

Basis for said comment? A319s is pretty random - what do QF group have on order (A320neos isnt it - not due for some years). Unless QFlink pick up some 319s cheap (second hand values of 319s is pretty soft currently).

Not that random, QF Link to take over VH_VHD ops for a start and there are obvious FIFO advantages on offer the F100s cannot provide.
