SC & FF points earn when buying extra seat "for comfort"?

Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

How did that work?

Can you book two tickets in your name, and get double the allowance?

Did you eat two meals at each service? :D

Yes, two tickets in my name so my WP1 benefits applied to both bookings/seats. The 128kg luggage allowance was FANTASTIC as I checked in to leave Aus with 48kg and returned with 111kg :D:D:D

I assume I could have had two meals if I wanted to, but had eaten a good meal in the First lounge in SYD before flight and then snacked (heavily) in SIN First lounge before popping my sleeping pill so didn't eat anything on the flight to LHR

Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

So are you guys saying that you can purchase multiple seats, on the same flights, in the same name, and earn points/SCs on all of the seats?

I really wouldn't have thought that was possible.

Yes, you can buy as many seats on the same flight as you want all in the same name and earn the points and SC's for each and every one of those bookings. The airline is not going to complain about getting a paid fare in exchange for an empty seat...its win-win for everyone.

Imagine how cool it would be to buy, say, all 32 seats in Y+ on a QF A380 and have that whole cabin and all the crew just for yourself....Alan Joyce would wet his pants with delight!!! He could increase cargo and/or reduce the fuel bill for that flight by a nice margin

For the same price you could probably charter a private jet? No points or status credits but no queues either.

Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

Good report, curious to hear your experience. I always thought of 2 x Y seats as a substitute for a Y+ seat, but not for J.

For saving money, and trying to arrive in semi-OK shape, I'm a big fan of day(ish) flights, coupled with paying for exit row seat and a nights accommodation enroute. So cost is probably about $300-400 more than ordinary economy, but probably worth it. Of course this won't work on QF after March but still OK for CX/SQ and probably others.

QF - day flight to HKG. Overnight in HKG, day flight to London. Return - QF 32 leaving around lunch time (so effectively daytime to SIN, arriving around midnight LHR time) and then day flight to SYD.

CX/SQ - day or evening flight to HKG/SIN, Overnight in HKG/SIN, morning or lunchtime flight to LHR. - Return leave around lunchtime, then day flight back to Australia.

I see domestic flights the best potential use of buying an extra seat due to the relatively short flights compared to intercontinental. Has anyone used their virgin CC 2 for 1 to buy an extra seat?

I wonder if this would work in a J companion sale, like the one held towards the end of last year!

I shall have to try this out some time, though hoping it works for domestic flights too… might be useful if a double SC promotion turns up.

Or you could get real crazy, and give those seats away to 31 other people with the same name as you... although there would be some confusion at check in, possibly...

Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

The two Y-class seats cost me $5,100...

On the points and status credit side of the equation I earned 42,344 points and 180 SC's flying in Y-class ...s

Great topic.... It's got me thinking of the next long haul trip. some questions:

Did you have to pay tax on the second seat, and was it booked as a "comfort seat" or just straight up as another seat with another boarding pass?

Did you have to book by phone or can it be done online?

Did the points and SCs post straight away or did you have to follow them up?

Thanks!

If they all had the same name it might make it easier to credit all of the FF points to the one account. :D Imagine that, 32 flights in one day and instant WP requal.

32x120=3840SCs in one trip. More than half way to LTS.

Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

There’s a domestic J companion sale on now, if it would work like that, and a regular economy sale incase anyone wants to find out…

Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

Very interesting - I always thought that if buying multiple seats you earned the points but not Status Credits. The Qantas FAQ on the matter (Purchasing an extra seat for personal comfort) sadly doesn't clearly state either way.

I've got to book some domestic travel in the next week or so - I might check with the call centre and if they confirm that SCs will be earned on both tickets I'll give this a try just out of curiosity's sake.

Now there's a great idea!!! Would be great to pull in to the exec/private aviation terminal rather than drive past it :p

Yeah taxes were paid on both seats as they were booked as if there were for two different passengers, so I received two boarding passes when I checked. Did the booking online myself. Points and SC's appeared within 48 hours of each flight, no follow up required :-)

I guess to book each seat you selected number of pax then just inserted your name and QFF No. in each?.

Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

Surely this would fall foul of the gate agent though? One passenger scanning two boarding passes?

You can actually do this cheaper by calling Qantas reservations and asking as you shouldn't need to pay all the Taxes, levies and charges for the additional seat.

I have merged this thread with one on the same topic. See from post #1 here: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....gram/can-you-earn-sc-ff-29006.html#post417802

D'oh!!! Why didn't I think of that???? I guess QF have got us so well-trained to be self service I forget all about the telephone sales!

Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

No, not at all. I had no problems getting both boarding passes scanned for each sector I flew. Even when I'd upgraded on the flight home, I had two boarding passes....one for First and one for Economy both of which were scanned. Admittedly the crew members at the boarding gate and door did have a slightly quizzical expression when presented with two boarding passes and only one passenger....less so when one boarding pass is for up front :-)

Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

What about for pilots weight calculations? If 10 people were to do the same thing then theoretically the pilots take off and landing weight could be about 1,000 KG out? I wonder if it would pose a problem?
