Essentially the same message I received from a friend's email after their email had been hacked. If you reply the scammer says something like. "Thanks for getting back to me - are you able to buy some gift cards for me as I have to pay some bills and cannot go out." My friend had no idea they had been hacked until several people in their contact list, who received the "please contact" email, contacted one another and then called the friend. Telstra immediately shut down their email account and reset it.that is the exact same email I received where I knew the sender, and that their email account was indeed hacked.
I hope your sender knows they have been hacked.
