So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

Maybe my car works differently - obviously a different brand (Jeep) but I unlock the car one of two ways (I never unlock using the remote) either I press a button on the door which unlocks the car (assuming keys are in my pocket) or I just pull on the door handle. My keys never leave my pocket and never leave my wife's bag. I love it as a system and get confused when I get in other cars now...

Keyless system is great.

My car has that and every now and then I lose my keys as I leave them in my car all the time.

The current Prado model requires a foot on the brake to start, won't start otherwise. Keys sit in the console. It's the other half's car, and to be truthful, I hate the keyless entry. I have such trouble making sure its locked, and of course if you have the keys on you, and you double check the door is locked, you've unlocked it in the process (well, at least I do). Also left it unlocked at the shops with the back full of Xmas presents as I thought it was locked when it wasn't!!!

We went from our now 18 year old Jeep Cherokee to a Grand Cherokee earlier this year - limited and on the road for $55K - great price and great build. Next time we might go the 5L engine for a but more oomph...

I've had 3 Jeeps first 2 Cherokee's were rubbish, totally unreliable thought the first one was a lemon but I was wrong.

3rd one was a Wrangler which was fun until I drove it into a cement mixer truck, it didn't like that and died but if one of had to go I was glad it was the car.

Now have a Range Rover Sport which is great apart from the maintenance costs, it needs 4 new Tyres a bargain at $2500 including the tracking!!! :(

That's not entirely true. Autonomous transport has been around for a long time. Back in the good ol' days if someone was out at the pub late at night the Bartender could drag him (or her, I guess) out to his horse, dump him on top and send the horse home. The weird part is that most of the initial development of autonomous vehicles was done under careful interpretations legislation intended for the days of the horse and buggy. Of course more appropriate legislation (Laws designed specifically with autonomous cars in mind) has recently been passed in 3 US states (Quoting Wikipedia, I actually only knew about the Google trials in California.). I'm hopeful that we'll see working models within 5-10 years and road-legal production models within 15.

Bought my wife a new BMW X5 3.0d end of last year with innovations pack and edition exclusive leather, wheels etc. Very nice car, and handles great.

I will be getting another Lexus600 hybrid that is a lovely 2 year old 40,000 km vehicle that is loaded with extras. They cost a bit less than half of the new list. I have never had a new car as these are better than new.

Was keen to buy a new Audi A8 L on the weekend (v6 3.0 diesel) and although I love the handling, looks and technology, this is one massive car. 5cm wider than my current Holden SSV and an extra 20 centimeters lengthwise. I can't imagine trying to park it anywhere, let alone the fear of a scratch in public places.

It sips 6.6L/100kms, which is less than half of my current guzzler. I can literally see the fuel needle going down while idling at the lights. I normally get 15-20L/100 based on a combined city/hwy driving :(

Anyhoo, thinking of a new Rex STI. Very sexy and still practical. Anyone got any opinions v regular Rex?

Brother has one of the new rexies and I drive a Lib GT.

You cannot go past the price:performance ratio of a rexy

So Audi v Holden

It's a bit like Bayern Munich v Perth

Not really much of a contest

Sti would be more fun than a Holden though go for the go faster gold wheels :)

I fear the STI Recaro bucket seats won't accommodate my child bearing hips nor my broad shoulders. Plus, it's still primitive inside, so I would really have to weigh up the pure performance compared to creature comforts and practicalities of everyday driving.

FYR, the A8L was on special at $110k drive away(friends with dealer) hence the interest. Not normally in the market for such an expensive car.

The Recaros are not that tight. I do feel the quailty of the impreza has gone down since the GD series (01-07) but the WRX is still a bargin at $39,990. The STi being over 60k i'd look at something else with better bang for your buck, maybe VW sirroco/Golf R, Bmw 135i, Merc A45. If you don't mind second hand B7 Audi RS4's are getting close to 60k.
