So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

An early Colorado with the ISUZU donk, tradie white, OME suspension and a few other ARB add on's.

As I reach the age of "manoporsche" I have no funding for flash cars I have "been there, done that".

I read an article about buying older prestige cars, and if you take the view that the ongoing maintenance costs are generally higher than a new car. The purchase cost is way less. So the experience is an inverse cost exercise, at least that’s the theory.

Funny you say that. Saw 3 Mustangs within 2 minutes yesterday with my grandchildren. Black, Silver & Red. We all agreed that Yellow was our favourite Mustang colour.
Yellow is not as popular as red silver or black though its an available colour on the mustang and not far behind.
I wonder is it better to get a popular colour when buying a car, or a "unique" colour
Im quite favourable to lime green as well though with yellow I dont think it fits in with the American "muscle car" genre

ALH I don’t think that would buff out but a bit of gaffer tape......
Meanwhile both of our Lexus models are still fitting in the “never fail” category which are the 600hl hybrid and the 450 h hybrid. We are in no rush to change.
I think if you know the history and its well maintained and fits in with your requirements there is really no need to replace. Cars these days are more reliable than ever

New cars = more depreciation less maintenance
Old cars = no depreciation more maintencnace

Often the maintenance is still cheaper than the depreciation, though the new car factor Im sure is a pull factor for some.

For a $70K new car at 5% annual interest and 50% balloon after 60 months, the annual amortised cost would be approx $10K per year (principal and interest). So long as your maintenance and repairs are less than this at the other end when the car is fully depreciated its worth keeping the vehicle on this basis.

Excel: =PMT(annual interest/12,number of monthly payments,present value,future value *-1)
interest = opportunity cost of parking money in a vehicle

If they did, they're require you to rotate the tyres at a dealer of their choice, after every flight. They'd also include as miles the time spent retracted.
Have you had problems with Coopers on one of your four-bees?

I used to be involved with a shooting forum, and there were a number of members there who had had trouble with them. They weren't well thought of.

A mate who was using them on a number of Land Cruisers had multiple failures. I was with him for one. Another had his Navara roll over after the tyre failure caused the wheel to lock up.

On my own vehicles, I've used Goodrich (good off road, but useless on), Pirelli, Bridgestone and Continental.

JB, a little bit OT but I read earlier that you have an S3. Out of interest, and if you’re willing to indulge us, what are the other three vehicles you have? Bugatti Chiron parked next to a VN Commonwhore or a a V12 nitro tractor pull and a Datto 120Y?

I currently own an Audi S3 and a Range Rover Sport, both of which wear Continental tyres.

Cars I've had in the past...Hilux SR5 (Goodrich and Pirelli). Audi Q5, Bridgestone. Land Rover Discovery 4, Goodyear. I recall the cars beyond that, but not the tyres. The full list of cars is depressingly long, but not very exciting.

Just picked up my new mitsi Pajero Sport last month and looking forward to going on a tour up the north of WA in the near future.

Went to the Lexus shop to update the air conditioning filter and was able to save about $222,000 because the new model on display has not been released.

And because it has the most hideous grille of any car?

I'm tempted to save a lot of money on fuel by buying a Jaguar I-Pace electric car. The only downside is that $120k worth of fuel would keep the S3 going just about forever. Plus if I keep buying toys, I'll never be able to retire.....

On the other hand, he who dies with the most toys wins.

I will buy a hand me down for half list at 40,000 kms and 2 years old instead. The chap who is buying sometimes sells me his old 600 hl. I don’t want an ugly grille.

@14c/kw off peak electricity,
A 90kw car would cost about $14 (incl charging losses) for a car that travels maybe 400km.

And can’t use those Woolies shopadockets plus “free” snickers bars just to get the extra 4c/L over and above the usual disc.

Aren’t they essentially Toyota

Yes Quickstatus and the developments in a Lexus make it into Toyota vehicles in due course.
Lexus has been ultra reliable for us since 1994 and my 600hl is the long wheel base hybrid. The only drawback is the smallish trunk for carrying bags so it would not suit everyone.
My car runs 10 litres for 100kms which is pretty good for such a big vehicle.

I don’t know why SUV are so popular. The boot is not exactly spacious for the size of the vehicle

Bring back the station wagons but in AWD. That’s why I got a Passat Alltrack.

I used to import my own filters - oil, air, cabin, fuel from a Lexus dealer in Miami as the Lexus and Toyota parts are often interchangeable. A lot cheaper than domestic. He is available on eBay I think

Wow. 14c off peak electricity. Where do you get that?

Electric cars at that price level make zero economic sense, and only a little driving sense. I guess it's a case of economy at any price. Plus there is little to zero charging infrastructure in Oz, and they become very difficult to use.

Nevertheless, the Jag I-Pace is a very interesting vehicle. Now, if they'd just put a 215 kw turbo 4 into it....
