So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

Booked in to test drive the Skoda RS this weekend.

You can pick up the other "RS" for a good deal at the moment! :)

But the Skoda is far more practical...........

Skoda imo is a VW by another name, they are all made by VAG. Below is the Skoda factory in Mladá Boleslav, the Czech Republic.

Why do you have to book a test drive. I’ve never booked a test drive.

You dont have to, just figured I'd save myself the trip, wouldnt want to turn up and find they were too busy to set one up for me. There isnt a dealer anywhere near us, so its more than a minor inconvenience to get there and find we cant test what we want.

VW Golf
Bowser-Syd(home)-Jindabyne-Skitube-jindabyne-skitube-jindabyne-syd(home)-Syd(office)-bowser on a 54L diesel
Was that the normal 103kW 2.0TDI?
I used to have the 125kW Mk5 TDI Golf GT Sport, then the MK 6 Golf R, now downgraded to the mk7 golf 1.4TSI

Correct - the Mk6
The current Mk7 110Tdi has a smaller tank and irritatingly I have to do jindabyne-bowser-syd(home)-Syd(office) rather than bowser after office. I could do bowser between home and office on Monday morning but rather sleep in for a few extra minutes

The 3,4 or 6? Or the Ford?

haha I do prefer not to drive the same car as other members of the family (there was a green RS at some point) :p In fact, there were three Ford Focus a few years back, I think only my brother has one now (the XR5).

hehe, i remember going to the VW factory in Wolfsburg.. every car on the road was a VW lol.
was awesome to see.

They had a great museum too, displaying every car that was important to the evolution of cars year by year pretty much, not just VAG branded ones.

Booking will hopefully work in your favour.

When I was buying my Audi I had a booking to test drive a couple of models plus the Evoque. Was 30min trip across town. Dealer was busy with a customer when I arrived. I sat there for 45 mins past the time scheduled. No one came and said sorrry for the wait, here is the ETA and dealer could see me there but didn’t send another agent over either.

I walked out without anyone saying boo. Bought elsewhere and provided unflattering feedback.

My sister got stung by the VW auto gearbox issues in her Golf, same supplier of auto boxes perhaps? Anyway VW fobbed her off until it was out of warranty and then said 'bad luck', we'll give you a decent trade in, yeah right.
She then traded it in on an Audi , I dare say the dealer was laughing all the way to the bank.
Unfortunately I was unaware of this, otherwise I would have given her some decent advice, imo............

Ford powerShift not designed by BorgWarner which designed the VW dual clutch.

It was the dry sump gearbox which had the issues. Apparently it was the mechatronics unit was the problem. The actual gearbox and clutches were OK
The wet sump dual clutch was very reliable. I’ve had 4 wet sump gearboxes with no issues.

Though the cost to service the wet sump was $900 every 60000km. Expensive 4L DSG oil. Removal of the oil filter requires removal of the air intake and air filter and battery tray.

If you guys are after a new car may I suggest using the services of www.autogenie.com.au you pay $50 and you get 3 quotes on the car with options you want. I bought my tiguan this way and managed a great saving without doing the running around

Within two or three years we should be able to buy battery/electric models at a reasonable price. Today in California you can do it already.
It won’t suit the 4 wheel drivers who go Perth to Broome trailing their caravan but more the folks who go up to 500 kilometers in a day.
I won’t miss the fortnightly and sometimes weekly hundred dollar hit to my pocket to buy petrol when I can recharge for about $10 a week.
I was pleasantly surprised by my ride in a Chevy Bolt in California last week.

The Jaguar I-Pace is another
Comparative energy costs:
On a per kWh basis solar plus Tesla battery costs 50c kWh.
So a 90kW battery in a Tesla car should cost approx $50 after charging losses.
90kW gives 500km = 10c/km
but my diesel Golf gets 900km on a 50L tank = $70 approx or 7c/km

My Landcruiser diesel gets 950km on 138L
= 20c/km
