So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

The Jaguar I-Pace is another
Comparative energy costs:
On a per kWh basis solar plus Tesla battery costs 50c kWh.
So a 90kW battery in a Tesla car should cost approx $50 after charging losses.
90kW gives 500km = 10c/km
but my diesel Golf gets 900km on a 50L tank = $70 approx or 7c/km

My Landcruiser diesel gets 950km on 138L
= 20c/km

Do you live in South Australia? I've never seen a figure that high of 50c/kWh. Even during peak times our juice costs 33.3c/kWh; our Tesla is scheduled to charge during off peak hours, which is 13.5c/kWh; significantly lower than your figure. The fuel-equivalent energy consumption is incomparable.

@cove long road trips (without charging infrastructure) aside, the other nice benefit is to wake up every morning with a full 'tank', so to speak, without having to make visits to the servo.

Thanks for your post Saltywings.
I hope to do two vehicles for about $20 a week by being flexible on when to charge up the vehicles.
If I can do that I will have a big smile on my face.

$20 purely for the power Saltywings to run two cars would be really sweet..
We buy our cars outright too.

13.5c/kWh for 90kW Tesla = $12
Which is 2.5c/km

What I was referring to was the use of solar array plus Tesla storage battery to load shift consumption including charging their electric car. This setup brings the cost to nearly 50c/kWh.
( Tesla 2 battery electricity costs 35c/kWh over it’s 37000 warranted kWh plus per kWh of solar array of 12-15c/kWh)

Some people actually do this

Cheaper to just buy off peak electricity to charge electric car.

Some days, I wake up and want drive to somewhere/anywhere out bush and maybe a long way on a whim - and get there and back (fast) on demand. Nothing against electric - and I'd love the acceleration of the good ones - but it just isn't going to work for me in what remains of my lifetime I think.

JohnM yes the electric cars will not suit everyone especially those who want to go Burke and Wills style exploring.
As for the idiot using “the look ma no hands” it is good he lost his licence.

Then earlier this year there was the attempt by a Tesla driver trying to use autopilot function as a defence against a DUI charge.

Cars seem to stereotype their owners:
Volvo drivers
Commodore drivers
Audi drivers
And now Tesla Drivers

I guess there will be a potential move by some early adopters toward a commuter / city car (all electric) and my a larger Hybrid SUV for long haul driving?
Either way, I suspect that until a national infrastructure is in place, the internal combustion engine is here for a lot longer yet!

Thanks for leaving out Lexus drivers Quickstatus. We have had Lexus cars since 1994 and love them.

Haha!. Did you ever own the original LS400?

The front grill in many ways defines the look of a car.
For some reason, I don't like the front grills of Lexus, Audi, Merc. Personal taste I think but don't ask me to critique art. The Toyota whose front grill angles outwards seems better to me. And then there are too many angles and lines in the external body of a Lexus - I reckon the designer of the Lexus must be a Cubist

Whats a nice front grill - the Range Rovers, ford mustang

More Diesel engines have NOx reducing systems - urea injection the most common - you can even see urea (Adblue) bowser next to a diesel bowser at some of the truck stops.
I’ve been told that Adblue - costs about 50% per litre of diesel and consumption is about 2% that of diesel. If Adblue tank is empty the car won’t start even if diesel tank is full

Anyone use Adblue?

Oh sorry, you are referring to the Powerwall battery. You didn't use the actual name in your previous posts so I got a bit confused.

Yeah, I'm not as sold on the economics of that, the up-front price definitely needs to come down a long way.

Then again, there are people greener than me who truly do want to zero out their reliance on the grid. If they can afford it, more power to them (pun not intended).

Sigh, it is a shame that Tesla drivers are now being stereotyped this way. I'm not even mad though - people who do stupid things like that...well...if you're going to self-select out of the gene pool...*cough*

I actually almost never use autopilot, only in stop n go traffic on the motorway. It's such a fun car to drive, why would I want someone[thing] else to do it for me? :p

My Golf has that auto park.
I’ve used it once. It parks really well

Ha...all cars do, but not necessarily with the same stereotype across the range. Don't forget Subaru WRX drivers, who are, of course, all ram raiders. And I doubt that an Audi S/RS driver is the same stereotype as an A6 person.

My wife and I both refer to blond female BMX X3/X5 drivers as 'the stereotype'. Especially if the car is black.

I think Ram raiders tend to use older model BMW these days. Also good for drive by shootings and various other contract work

I think the X5 stereotype you refer to also populate black Q7 but necessarily in the S version. Mrs QS informs me they are the School/Shopping version

And who can forget the Chrysler 300 Mob car.

I also have doubts about middle aged men driving around in a Mini Cooper S (thought they actually look like a nicely robust car).
