So, what music are you listening to now?

I've spent the summer (so far) listing to the Go Betweens. Ten years too early for me to appreciate at the time but making up for it now.

My favourite line, possibly of all time, is this from Streets of Your Town:

And don't the sun look good today
But the rain is on it's way
Watch the butcher shine his knives
This town is full of battered wives

I assume they're talking about Brisbane which makes the bridge name somewhat funny. Their lack of commercial success is a total mystery. I'm struggling to think of a better or more underrated Aussie album than 16 Lovers Lane.

Jeff Beck gone, :( :( Where to start with his music, I think I have all his albums, RIP Jeff, you gave a lot of enjoyment to many many people. He really knew how to bend a note.

The young girl playing bass is Tal Wilkenfeld who was only 22 when this was recorded in 2008.

Cause We've ended as Lovers ... still my fave JB track.

As posted by Denali and Buzzard, Renee Geyer has died. :( A few of my favourites from her.

She is backing vocals on this along with Bonnie Riatt.

too many others, although this is probably my favourite.

Following on from the Sprucegoose lead .. I would not be displeased if they play this at my wake (after all there will be multitudes in attendance…………..)

That is quite a choice, any particular reason why? I first heard it on JJJ in the early hours of the morning in the nineties whilst working in the tape library loading/unloading tape drives.
Not only do I like his work, but there is a connection to swmbo through the name. Although Henryk was Polish and swmbo’s heritage is German.

The J's back in the day. What a station.
Introduced me to so much alternative stuff.

Good question, Coosie. Let's leave the Germans out of it (although there could be a case to consider East Germans; Henryk (as you said) was Polish and proud of his nationality. He wasn't well known outside Poland until the mid to late 80s. I feel his music was inspired by the emotional changes and reflected the massive transformation of the Eastern Bloc, which was essentially moving from a Stalinist philosophy towards something new, more significant and caring.

Suppose you accept the premise that profound and transformative changes occurred in the Eastern Bloc as economies, institutions such as the rule of law, new freedoms and opportunities were being created within a new world awaking and were contemporary during his most creative compositions, say in the last forty to sixty years. I believe the genius of Gorecki reflects this social metamorphosis and, at an individual level, invites us to stimulate our transformations.

At a personal level, where your question was directed, Henryk's music allows me to take redemptive glimpses of my soul and, in a very simple way, prepares me to understand and accept the present.

The most peaceful place for humans is when we can align our heads and hearts. The genius of Gorecki helps me see beyond what my eyes and brain are reporting and carries me to a more peaceful and celebrated place.

We should publicly admire the tremendous Australian soprano Yvonne Kenny, who has brought great joy into the world.

Thank you for your very insightful reply, I will admit that I need to be in a certain sort of mood to listen to this, a very introspective one, but I wouldn’t have been able to explain it like you have.
I like your writing, very much in the much missed juddles style, imho.
What’s next? :)

Excellent choices

I always loved Renee Geyer’s song ‘Guess who I saw today?’
Of course YOU know the ending
… a couple talking about their day, she tells how she webt shopping, then had coffee in a cafe and she was mesmerised by a beautiful couple clearly in love / the hand holding /the deep stares /gentle touches…

Then that ending with a crescendo

🎶🎶 ..Guess who I saw today 🎶🎶🎶….I…..saw…you🎶🎶

Brings me to tears almost every single time
