Someone's in my seat

On our recent HNL/SYD flight when the boarding call was made for J pax in rows 1-6, an older couple barreled to the front of the queue on the other side of the tensa barrier showed their boarding passes to the staff saying "business class."

They were directed to join the back of the queue behind the other 34 J class pax must to the amusement of those pax.

They refused to believe the pax in the queue were in J but I glanced at the boarding passes as they walked past and every single one I saw was indeed J.

We were in whY and boarded next when the call was made for WP's etc and boarded through the forward left door. I noticed the culprits were holding boarding passes for 4EF but they stopped at row 1 and told the pax in 1EF they were in the wrong seats. The rightful owners of 1EF pointed out that the other couple's boarding passes were for row 4 and they were standing at row 1.

The behaviour screams NB's on a points upgrade who have a sense of entitlement that way exceeds that of any elite pax.

I was patiently waiting to board an A380 last year when this couple came up behind me and said rather rudely "Excuse me, but we're in Business".

I responded with: "How nice for you. I'm in First so you'll just have to wait" which shut them up. They then had to wait a moment as once my BP was scanned I was escorted to the aircraft.

A glance at their boarding passes, and of course they were NB feeling way over-entitled.

I've almost done the same thing before ('Excuse me, I'm in Business') and bit my tongue when I realised what I was about to say (mostly due to reading other peoples stories here). But my reasoning for almost saying it wasn't because I felt at all entitled, but because I didn't want to appear 'rude' by pushing past people queueing without some kind of explanation (i.e. just an incredibly rude Y pax who is shoving past people) - the queue was blocking the priority boarding lane quite badly, and Y boarding hadn't yet commenced, or been called.

I have had to push past gate lice when on some AA flights as they board F then Elites.

Or pretty much all of the legacy AA domestic fleet

Have you been in 1A before and then just before take-off told to move, you shouldn't be in that seat, etc. even though you hold a boarding pass with 1A allocated and have had the seat assigned for several months? If so, me too. Don't get me started........ ;)

Nah, it's that most of the aircraft start with 3A ;)

Also with AA you don't have to be an elite to get group 1 boarding as you can pay extra for the privilege at the time of booking.

Group 1 boarding is also an inclusion (more like an incursion) with the AA Citi Select cc they're flogging to death at the moment via onboard PA's.

Just to stay on topic, I try to board asap when boarding starts to minimize the opportunity for anyone to steal my seat.

It wasn't an Aussie actress now doing ads for a Middle East based carrier was it?

Sounds like a situation somewhere in between Goldilocks & the Three Bears & Nightmare on Elm St.

Okay, now I've got you started can you fill us in on the rest of the story. :p

My rant wouldn't be suitable or clean enough for a public forum ;)

Yes, but IME they board F before Group 1

My wife and I have been split up for seating many times. If we can't get two together when buying tickets, I often book one row forward/back of each other, as I assume only "like for like" type trades. However, I never settle in before the other person boards, as it's presumptuous. I've never had anyone refuse, but I also never assume and would never ask anyone to take a worse seat (never switch an aisle for a middle, etc.)

The whole "group 1" thing is so bizarre. On many flights on AA on busy routes (SFO-CLT for example, which I like to call the Banker Express) I've seen the plane easily be half boarded before group 1.

Sounds like certain BA flights out of LON e.g. GVA, EDI, MAN, GLA etc.

Definitely a marketing gimmick ;)

To add to the bredth of discussion I have had a good experience where I was not sitting in my allocated seat.

Perth to Melbourne Red-Eye last year I was relatively quick to board and settled into my window seat. Very shortly after a tourist couple one of which was allocated the seat next to me and the other further down the back. They were disappointed to see me already sitting in one of the pair seats as they were hoping that by also boarding early they could just take the two seats and hope the issue would sort itself out later.

As a solo traveler, I ended up volunteering to move for them without consulting the cabin crew. After the refreshments were served the CSM found me and gifted my a bottle of wine from the J cabin saying thank you for the gesture. I assume this was discovered by him when his WP greeting to my original seat resulted in surpirse.

"Accidental" seat swaps are frustrating too: on a recent flight someone was in my seat (mid-teens F on a 737.) After much confusion, and this person claiming that it was definitely their seat and I was the young upstart, some logic prevailed. They got up and I claimed my seat. There must have still been some confusion which resulted in a FA being summoned. It turned out their seat was a early-20s A! So, still a window seat but on the otherside of the plane (and a fair few rows back.) Madness!

Thats what happens when the 3 R's are not pushed in school can't read or write !!

Bit uncharitable assumption on your part.... They might just be plain morons !!
