SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Me and the SO are looking at some options for a relaxing break over xmas and new years. One of the options on the table is Bangkok. I've had a quick look and there is availability on our dates, but there are two different aircraft servicing the flight from SIN>BKK. Does anyone know which aircraft has a better J product and service?

It's only a 2.5 hr flight but we've never flown J before so want to make the most of the experience.

The two aircraft are the 777-200 and A330.

Seatguru has the A330 as an angle lie flat seat in a 2-2-2 config and not sure which config the 777-200 is.

NIce, referring to your wife, husband, partner, mistress as the 2nd Officer. I like it Pilot.
Yes, I know what you really meant. ;)

Are you worried about the seats being lie flat or no on a 2.5hr flight? First time J, soak up the ambience.

Not fussed on whether they will be lie flat or not, but rather which aircraft has a better product, or even if there is any difference at all.

I would err on the side of the A330's. Otherwise check the seat map as to the configuration (can be done via making dummy booking on SQ website). If the 772 has 1-2-1 configuration, go for that. If it as the 2-3-2 configuration, avoid it. Some of the last OLD 772's SQ has in it's fleet, with 2-3-2 cradle seat configuration are still operating on the BKK route. Whilst these are still very comfortable for a two hour flight (better than the business class you see, for example, on similar length MEL-BNE on QF & VA which are typically 737's), they lack the modern-ness of the (albeit now aging) A330 product.

Thanks dajop. I can't do a dummy booking right now since I don't have any points in my KrisFlyer account. I'll have to transfer some points over to check.

If providing date and time, others can help with expert flyer as advised above.

Otherwise you don't need points - or even KF membership - just do a dummy commercial booking from SIN-BKK (i.e. as if you were to pay by credit card). The seat selection screen comes up before you are required to make payment. So once you hit seat selection you can tell the aircraft type, then you just exit.

I posted about this in the suites available thread but have an update and need some opinions from those experienced:

So I booked for 2 pax SYD-SIN-LHR in Suites for May next year. Last week I got an email saying our seats on the SIN-LHR leg had changed. Quick check shows a aircraft change from A380 to 777. We only want to fly suites not first (partners first trip on anything other than Y and her first time to Europe).

Anyhow, called and spoke to them and after calling me back so she could look into options said waitlisting the suites flight the next morning was what she could do. So basically nothing. I asked to speak to a manager and was told he is busy and she'll escalate to him and try and work something out and give me a call within a week.

We have flexibility with dates but everything around is now not available on suites -- everything when first booking was available. Suites are available at standard level but no saver (which is what we had booked). Best case scenario would be to get on the suites flight the same night, second being the one the next morning. So what should my expectations in this situation be? So far they haven't been very helpful with a situation they have caused and I don't hold out much hope for what this manager is going to offer...

andy I certainly sympathize with you - serious PITA are after all your planning - unfortunately subs do occur - nothing anybody here can do - you need to keep calling and keep pleading your case - with luck you should be able to find a really helpful sympathetic agent sooner or later - I cannot get my best girl to look at it as she is on leave until 11th - just keep calling.

Andy, I had the same issue last month. We booked an almost identical award for me and my partner (LHR-SIN-SYD) for next May. However there was a time change or a flight taken off the roster or something, and we were moved to a different flight on a 777 instead of 380. They told me the same thing (manager is busy). I politely offered to hold, "to prevent the manager from not being able to get through to me when he/she calls". After about 3-5 minutes on hold, I was speaking with a senior or manager. They offered me wait list, and I agreed, but asked that they contact the inventory manager responsible for that route and ask them to release seats considering the circumstances. It worked for us..... 30 minutes later our seats were released.

This is a miracle. I had all sorts of trouble recently when I was trying to reroute around a cancelled flight. It took five calls to get to someone who would put me through to a manager, and even got hung up on once when I politely asked to hold for a manager ..... but I guess I was on an economy booking, the scum of the earth. They tend to treat F passengers better.
