SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

You were lucky and should enjoy your fortune.

It is not always the case. Don't take that as solid-gold precedent.

Andy, I had the same issue last month. We booked an almost identical award for me and my partner (LHR-SIN-SYD) for next May. However there was a time change or a flight taken off the roster or something, and we were moved to a different flight on a 777 instead of 380. They told me the same thing (manager is busy). I politely offered to hold, "to prevent the manager from not being able to get through to me when he/she calls". After about 3-5 minutes on hold, I was speaking with a senior or manager. They offered me wait list, and I agreed, but asked that they contact the inventory manager responsible for that route and ask them to release seats considering the circumstances. It worked for us..... 30 minutes later our seats were released.

My wife's redemption was changed by SQ causing us to miss the connecting flight to EUR [on the same PNR]. I was prepared to pay for a commercial ticket to accompany her.

Dajop, It was in F.

Despite multiple phone calls over 4-5 months and even written requests to SQ Australia, SQ refused to budge insisting she stayed on the waitlist for an alternative flight that would have allowed for a seamless connection.

In the end, I cancelled the SQ redemption and took on paid CX flights instead [yes, SQ was advised that it was a live option prior to me cancelling the redemption but they refused to budge].

My partner took a CX redemption.

This is a miracle. I had all sorts of trouble recently when I was trying to reroute around a cancelled flight. It took five calls to get to someone who would put me through to a manager, and even got hung up on once when I politely asked to hold for a manager ..... but I guess I was on an economy booking, the scum of the earth. They tend to treat F passengers better.

Me and the SO are looking at some options for a relaxing break over xmas and new years. One of the options on the table is Bangkok. I've had a quick look and there is availability on our dates, but there are two different aircraft servicing the flight from SIN>BKK. Does anyone know which aircraft has a better J product and service?

It's only a 2.5 hr flight but we've never flown J before so want to make the most of the experience.

The two aircraft are the 777-200 and A330.

Seatguru has the A330 as an angle lie flat seat in a 2-2-2 config and not sure which config the 777-200 is.

Most likely the 777-200 will be the old intra-Asia config with 2-2-2 angle flat seats, similar to that plied on the SIN-PER and SIN-BNE routes, it certainly was 2 weeks ago for me.

I found the A330 to be better, the actual seats are identical, but pitch was definitely improved on the A330 and the 2-2-2 format is staggered slightly so middle seats are a few inches ahead of window seats. That gave a bit more privacy and the extra pitch compensated for having a seat-mate.

A330 has 2 cabins for J as well, the mini-cabin at the back is more private, but close to Y bassinets...

Update regarding my troubles -

The lady called the following day just giving an update saying she had waitlisted the suites flight the following day and would see if they could release the seats. I added that we were very flexible on the day we travel if it helps get some seats opened up.

Yesterday she called again saying she got flights for the following Thursday (original were Sat) but with the overnight in SIN. I hadn't looked that far forward when looking for alternative options (I checked -+ 4 days) before calling so I'm not sure if they opened up those seats just for us or they were simply available. In the end we are happy with the result while not being exactly what we want. We have a night in Singapore which wasn't the preferred outcome but we'll take it.

Now I wait for these flights to be changed...

OK whilst not perfect are you satisfied with end result? O/N in SIN not a horrible outcome - we do it regularly on route to USA / Europe - if you don't want to go into SIN you can always use TPR as your 'restaurant' base and book ST hotel or even CP - lot's of flexibility in SIN.

Yeah but I wonder the outcome if we couldn't move dates as much. The thing with the O/N is we gain nothing - the original booking we had more than enough time to go in and have a look around, relax, have dinner and a couple of drinks and then back to the airport for the on wards flight landing in the morning. On the positive with the original the flight to LHR would have been mostly spent sleeping so this gives a chance to recharge the liver and get my payback on the wine stocks . We'll stay at the CP hotel but still go into the city and explore which will make the next morning more leisurely.

Well Just got back from my very first SQ flight.

IAH - SYD in First with my daughter

Gotta say, the service is something else had a great time. Obviously on a 777-300ER with the older product but hey, not really going to complain.

The only negative is that I found the seat when in the bed position a little awkward with the seat belt. Instead of the belt just going across the hips, it is angled shoulder to hip across the body.

I actually think my seat was not 100% as the belt was quite firm and no way could I sleep on my side.

Other than that, perfect trip

Do the fumes ever get down the back of the aircraft?

P.S. What champagne do they serve down the back in SQ regional economy? Do I get better if I say i know you personally?
Most probably - did you pack your 'Special SQ PJs' like I told you Johnny?

I wonder what response I will get on QF93 in a few weeks when I change into these?

Yeah but I wonder the outcome if we couldn't move dates as much.

You would have had the option to take a standard first class seat or cancel the booking (with any fees and charges). Airlines are permitted to substitute aircraft. If you were paying $, you could easily move to a flight with availability. Bit more difficult when subject to award space, but it is a difficult argument to make out the airline is under any obligation to open up inventory when it is almost a like for like product.

Here's something I have never witnessed in SIN before.

After arriving from CGK we were herded go the holding pen for arrivals screening.

Maybe something to do with this?

Indonesia arrests six suspects allegedly planning rocket attack on Singapore

Jakarta: Indonesian authorities arrested six suspected militants on Batam island on Friday who were believed to be linked to the Islamic State group and plotting an attack on nearby Singapore, an Indonesian police spokesman said.

Just a follow up Johnny - I had a flr MNL-SIN-MEL on SQ some years back - security screening post checkin MNL + security screening pre dep MNL + security screening arr SIN + security screening pre dep SIN = 4 security screenings en route.

De-lurking here after reading about 180-odd random pages of this thread...

SWMBO (or so she claims) and I are headed SYD-SIN-LHR and ZUR-SIN-LHR in April/May next year in lowly PE (SQ222/SQ306 / SQ345/SQ221) with connecting flights from/to BNE. Was wondering if any of you could give any tips for those of us who don't quite make the pointy end of the plane?

Not having much status I understand that we can purchase lounge access in SIN - we should be able to kill the 3-odd hours on the way but wondering what to do on the way back (with a 14-ish hr stop-over)?
