SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

De-lurking here after reading about 180-odd random pages of this thread...

SWMBO (or so she claims) and I are headed SYD-SIN-LHR and ZUR-SIN-LHR in April/May next year in lowly PE (SQ222/SQ306 / SQ345/SQ221) with connecting flights from/to BNE. Was wondering if any of you could give any tips for those of us who don't quite make the pointy end of the plane?

Not having much status I understand that we can purchase lounge access in SIN - we should be able to kill the 3-odd hours on the way but wondering what to do on the way back (with a 14-ish hr stop-over)?

14hr's I'd be going into the city and spending a night providing the timing is right. Always a good place to have a layover in.

Do you have a bank Black Amex? Free Priority Pass Lounge access. Dnata Lounge T1 has showers, food, grog.

SQ345 gets into SIN about 6am and SQ221 departs about 8pm so I guess we could do pretty much a full DAY in 'town' (the flight times were part of the cruise package we got)? Did I read somewhere that there's a sightseeing tour or something offer for pax in this type of situation?

I'm assuming that as the bags will be checked all the way to SYD that we wouldn't need to worry about having to lug them around before we depart again?

EDIT: nope, no black Amex - have a borderline pathological hate for them as when I lived in Sydney at one stage my home phone number was one digit transposed from an Amex fax number...:evil::evil::evil:

Bags will be checked through. IIRC there is a free tour. But a taxi into town is cheap (and the MRT cheaper) if you want to do things your own way.

Part of your 'package' with singapore airlines includes singapore 'changi dollars'. You get $40 of these per person as a once off (to be used either the outbound, return, or saved for another trip and added together). The $40 are issued as two vouchers, $20 each. One of those can be used for 2 hours of lounge access. So that's the lounge sorted. The other vouchers can be used for anything you want from duty free (and they can be added together for use by one person).

The 14 hour layover is a bit more complex. The free tour is one option. or you can make your own way. Or, depending how well you sleep on planes, if you think you will be tired, book a 6 hour room at the transit hotel, then go on your free tour, then relax at the airport before your departure.

What MEL said - you basically have 2 choices - pass immig and spend day touring SIN - MRT or taxi gets you downtown very quickly, very easily and reasonably cheaply - lotsa stuff to do and see in SIN - but of course you will return to airport sweaty and sticky but then you can go 'buy' a shower at ST hotels.

Or stay airside - paid lounges in SIN will get you a shower and the basis of basic F & B - if you do take ST hotel as MEL suggested you will get that shower anyway - SIN 3 terminals have abundance of things to do.

Make sure you have your togs with you and head to pool in T1 for couple hours - there is a bar right there - gazillions of F & B offerings across the 3 terminals which are not grossly overpriced - I personally love sitting in Hard Rock Cafe on T3 for their ribs and margaritas - but as always we are all different.

What is the guest policy when flying SQ J? Tried looking this up but no luck. Only managed to get information for the GoldKris but not SilverKris. Thanks in advance.

I think J ticket has no guest ability. You would need to use the goldkris lounge if you have status that can guest people.

Comm or rdpt J tix have no guesting rights into SKL J - if you are *A Gold you can guest 1 into SKL J - go figure. NFI re Gold Lounge as I would never frequent that place for fear of running into JohnnyK! :D

Huh. Missed me on Thursday night. We could have had a great time drinking real alcohol. ;)

Here's something I have never witnessed in SIN before.

After arriving from CGK we were herded go the holding pen for arrivals screening.

Just a heads up fingerprinting is now done when passing through SIN immigration, and other ports in SG (was being pushed out progressively). No doubt the recent ISIS threat in SG has ICA on their toes.

Random luggage scans are also being completed as pax pass through to landside.

Yes I did notice the new fingerprinting in SIN when I went for a walk outside on Thursday night.

I had the 14 hour transit on Sunday. I went into the Marina for about five hours and just strolled around the whole area including in at the Fullerton for a bathroom break and looking at everything on every floor at the "shoppes" as they are called. There was a big family Christian event at one of the conference rooms called, 'Raising Rock Solid Kids'. I went on the MRT for about $6 total.

I didn't get finger printed.
