SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Hoping someone here can help... what format does a USB & Video have to be to play your own videos in the IFE in F on 777-300ER?
Didn't I read somewhere where some jerk/s allegedly took over a plane by plugging in through IFE system? Or had I had 1 too many?

From Friday 25 August there are no saver redemptions until some waitlist availability from 28 August.

Have had a look at Expert Flyer for some of those dates and with the Melbourne flights there are only up to 4 seats already booked and the Paris flights have only 6 booked. Some of the Brisbane flights have no bookings yet. Have tried Amsterdam and Milan as well and no availability either for J saver.

Is that they are yet to release J saver seats yet?

Yes they have been released and already taken. I booked mine in September 2016

Original post above. Mission accomplished for return J class saver redemption from Brisbane in September and October 2017. I had been checking daily for flights up to mid September to Paris and tonight found one flight available ex Brisbane 8 September SQ266 connecting with SQ336 on 10 September.

The battle was then to get a return flight to Brisbane four to five weeks later. No availability Paris/Milan/Zurich/Munich/Frankfurt/Amsterdam (limited waitlist availability) but found one from Dusseldorf on 13 October SQ337. As a stop over was wanted in Singapore on the way back phoned SQ on 13 10 11 and struck a very helpful agent and after I explained what I wanted he confirmed he could book me with stopover in Singapore on the way back and without prompting he said on line discount still applies.

Coming back to Brisbane 20 October on SQ265. As a matter of interest the return taxes were $1035 each which from my recollection were more expensive than last J saver redemption to Europe in 2015.

Finally doing all this for my mother and wife as I am not travelling on this trip.

I don't know what SQ's policy is on this. And it varies between airlines. Some airlines will upgrade pax to business class, although even that can sometimes depend on the fare paid (for example full flex gets you business, discounted PE gets you back in economy).

Some airlines may offer an upgrade coupon for use at a later time.

Perhaps a call to SQ to ask their policy? At least that will give you a starting point for you expectations.

Just got an email reply back, doesn't sound good... Their basic reply was that if this scenario occurred, they would try to accommodate us on an alternate flight that had PE (SQ242 cuts it a bit fine to transfer to SQ306) or we'd be downgraded to Y and be refunded the difference which would peeve me somewhat as the reason we're flying via SYD (at extra expense) is to go PE.

Stats so far for the year have a 3-class plane sitting at 55%...

If you were to be downgraded SQ you could take the fare difference and ask to be routed on the next flight direct to your preferred port (BNE?) rather than SYD. you might also ask for an upgrade certificate for use on a later flight (friends of mine were given one of these a few years back after an oversell, not sure if SQ still has them though... but worth asking).

Got back from our honeymoon a few weeks ago - we were lucky to have the entire A380 F class cabin on SYD-SIN all to ourselves. We had dinner on certain seats, watched the view from another set of seats and relaxed in our suite. It honestly felt like we had our own private jet - a perfect way to start of the honeymoon ;-)

Sounds like a great result.

To all those wise SQ redemption fans what do you see as the best value (miles and $$) redemption for a 10 day-2 week holiday in the middle of the year? Flights will be wait listed.

Philippines probably looks good. Had wanted Sri Lanka but the $$ are ridiculous $800+ per person, could go to Europe with that.

Philippines is good in my opionion. Book it as two one way journeys though and the taxes will be cheap on the return leg as flights originating in the Philippines cannot charge fuel surcharges per their regulations.

Will be doing a stopover in Singapore in one direction (preferably on the way home) so don't know if that would then bump the taxes up?

Possibly - depending how long the stopover is (<24hrs should be free). Odds are incurring a stopover fee on the way home will be cheaper than the airport taxes charged if done as a return trip with a free stopover.

I find it so frustrating that there is no interactive Singapore Airlines and Silk Air flight map on all the destinations they fly to. Makes it so hard trying to scroll through all the different places they offer.

Have you thought of Penang?

We did Brisbane to Penang in J in June last year. It is in the same zone as Singapore so no extra in points. From memory taxes around $400 to $500 return.

Singapore to Penang was by Silkair and flight was only 50 minutes.

Really loved Penang. Had 3 nights in Georgetown and 4 nights Batu Ferengi.

Thanks. Yea definitely not off the list. Have been there before though! Haven't to the Philippines or Sri Lanka. Only thing stopping me booking Sri Lanka is the ludicrous $$$ on top of the points. Philippines is around Monsoon season.

Other option that seems good value is Turkey, but a lot less flight options.

Living in Asia I've been flying SQ a bit over the past 3 years and sadly got to report IMO they are going downhill big time of late.

I've always thought their service was overrated, my experience even in J is they have a script they run to and when it works it works and couldn't want anything more, but the moment the script fails they just turn to custard and become clueless. I've miss out on my main meal once because someone in front asked for another bit of bread (of course I got my meal but only after asking)

Their aircraft also leave a lot to be desired again mainly on Asian routes. Many complain about Qantas not upgrading their A330's quick enough but SQ are not much better, worse in fact as they have many a/c with product they don't plan to upgrade. On my last trip which was CGk-SIN-BKK-SIN-CGk I sample the best and worst of their fleet.

New A350, A330, 772 and regional 773.

The Airbuses being new were very good with the A350 being long haul but used on a 1.5 hour flight.

The 772 was plain awful. I've flown this version before in J still with sit-up seats. Seems they keep the couple left like this for the BKK and MNL flights. I was in Y so seat was ok but IFE just cough.

And the 773 was non long haul but still very old IFE system and very dated. And IFE didn't work for a number of pax including me.

Meals in Y on the short haul were some of the worst I've EVER had on any flights anywhere in the world. Just plain awful and crew some of the most disinterested I've ever meet too. Or maybe I've just been spoilt flying J too much. Who knows.

Lounges also very ordinary. My last trip being in Y didn't use them but most times I am in J and shocked at how ordinary they are especially in their home base of Singapore. Nothing special what so ever.

So IMO overall very overrated airline.

Agree SQ has some old configurations... but they aren't using them for 11 hour flights to PEK :(

I agree service is 'by script' in business. That's one of the main differences to First. But overall I was fairly impressed... a 6 course dinner PVG-SIN in 5 hours with mains individually plated. They even warmed the bread plates. Compare that to QF trans-con... SQ is a winner.

Oh yes they are. SIN to WLG uses a product no too dissimilar to Skybed MKI and an IFE system of same generation and model actually. Yeah it stops in Canberra so not 11 hours solid but still flight that long.

Plus SQ uses the same Skybed equivalent product to almost if not all Australian cities on selected flights. Personally I think it is fine for the length but many on this and other boards don't appreciate it having now. Having been spoilt into the expectation of direct isle fully flat bed seats. I did laugh when I saw a comment this config is now industry standard in Asia yes but elsewhere not really.
