SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

What are peoples thoughts SQ Suites vs Lufthansa F on FRA-JFK who have flown both? Doesn't have to be that specific route I guess.

For the total end-to-end experience - LH wins. SQ has the better bed in terms of privacy. But LH wins on everything else - the First Class terminal, food, amenities. Cabin crew, both equally good, but totally different styles.

Thanks for that. I've booked SYD-SIN-FRA-JFK (mentioned a page ago) and was thinking why don't I try change the FRA-JFK to LH so I can take a Porsche for a spin, hit the first class terminal for a whisky+cigar and then try out a new airline. Obviously it'll have to be close in for the availability.

As as long as you're booked in an eligible fare class

Apparently [-]SC's only apply[/-] "eligible sectors" are only erned if the flight is booked under a VA flight number. EG flying on SQ222 and 306 gets the points [-]but no[/-] & SC's but does not count for an "eligible" sector, whereas VA5512 and VA5684 [-]get both[/-] does. Can confirm this from recent experience....
Sorry - meant to say 'eligible sectors'... Have clocked up nearly 25k VFF points and 450 SC doing BNE-SYD-SIN-LHR but only BNE-SYD counted as an 'eligible sector' as it had a VA flight number.

I agree with my colleague with the similar AFF name. If you can also access the LH FC terminal at FRA including the transfer to the plane, it sure beats the SQ TPR for quality, ambience and style.

That would be in contravention of their website as by definition, you earn SCs on eligible flights, ie. ones where you earn points.

what's the point comparison now the online discount has gone for a pure SQ redemption vs a *A redemption? i remember reading a couple of articles that suggested by adding a *A sector you could actually reduce the required points down.

Interested on this one as well. I did one LH F flight in 2012 and would love to do it again!

Correct. SCs are earned when flying SQ. Bonus velocity points for gold/plat status only accrue when flying on VA codeshare flight numbers, that's the main difference. Also it's generally cheaper to find a higher SC earning economy fare on SQ than having to purchase a flexi/freedom on VA.

Looks like:
SQ only: 152,000 + ~$200 taxes
*A: 127,000 + $???

The fuel etc taxes is the part I am not sure of.

I've been looking at South Africa and 78k for J reward SA to BNE. 72.5k for star alliance. Unsure about difference in taxes though (and availability if any). Tried to call last night to get a price on the star alliance but after 20 minutes on hold gave up. Try again tonight...

Wow so I could even add a JFK-ORD throw away leg so get a 25,000 pts saving with a tiny bit extra $? Top info. I was under the impression under the *A redemption even the SQ legs would have the old taxes.

LH group YQ is ridiculous :(

Can't agree more but leaving from GVA removed the UK air passenger duty , so A$ 70 ish was good value YQ and 10500 less points

You booked all this for 127.500 pts?

Have a look yourself

Europe to North Asia 2 in F is 255000 return or 127500 one way . It's going to be a hell of a ski trip French Alps for a week and then a week in Japan on the way home

Nice tip Danger UXB! Something to consider when booking the next trip.

I was thinking of it, but in monitoring the flight combination I wanted to London the second and main leg was often booking out at max booking time out, and so I went with certainty over a point saving.

So I just booked online as a SQ Booking the minute redemptions opened.

Going F in all daylights hours on both flights with an overnight in SIN and so will be able to make the most of the Krug and meals and with a chance of the new Suite on the SIN-LHR leg.

Arriving in SIN early too and so dinner will be in TPR before heading off to our room at the Crowne Plaza.

It will take a day longer to get to Europe than my last Suite redemption, but with no breakfast or night periods on the flights we can make the most of all the food, wine, benefits, service and also the TPR.;)
As we will be travelling for 11 weeks the extra day will matter little and it will be a very indulgent way to start our trip.

Also last time we enjoyed (as in the alcohol!!!) the first flight so much, that catching the next flight not long after and after midnight it was a bit of a waste as we sept through much of it.
