SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

SQ - Trips & Tales

Haven't flown Dom in China now for 2 years so don't have update on current situation, but once I was merely moving switched off smartphone from shirt pocket to carry on and they swooped on me like a hawk saying must turn off (and I didn't even have it on!).

I always assumed not even flight mode was allowed as they simply don't trust passengers to comply with flight mode instructions and don't want the potential dramas of crew having to check each phone. Seat belt compliance is woeful enough let alone something this nuanced....

First time ever flying SQ this Saturday. 3 week holidays in Austria, Germany and France and I am more excited about the flight than the destinations!
Have fun!

I was exactly the same on my first suite flight and first time to Paris as well. Leading up to the flight I was way more excited on the flight and experience than the actual trip. Can't wait to book next suite flight.

not sure what SQ is doing with their award engine, but hoping it's only a temporary issue - no availability from April 2016 next year e.g. SYD-SIN, SIN- JFK, SIN-LHR - all waitlisted, even for 1.

I just had the site change with an offer to try the beta version of the new website.

Perhaps they are doing some updates which is affecting availability. I have noticed that the last date I can get flights in or out of Japan is at the end of March.

Any body downloaded latest SQ App and tried it as yet?

My initial thoughts were OMG what a 'washed out' appearance - but after only a few plays some significant upgrades and improvements.

Just hanging for me Cruiser on Android app. Just wouldnt budge much. Deleted and reinstalled with not much improvement.

Are there any tangible improvements??

IMHO vast improvement - working perfectly on iPhone - but you expect that don't you? :-)

Didnt notice as I never used that - of course the new App won't be to everybodies liking

It was there earlier this weekend, which was post upgrade but I have checked now and it has disapeared.

My first thoughts was it is a decent improvement as the old version did not complete any searches for me over the last week and would hang indefinitely, but after the update it completed a search showing 3 days the first few times I tried it.

I've had a guts full of QF and CX
And after last night I have had a guts full of SQ too - last minute sub last night saw 77WN subbed for 77W - still didn't get maiden nights sleep in SQ new F - that's it - I am over them totally.

No more QF - no more CX - no more SQ for me - I am sticking strictly to MU / 3U going forward!

Sounds like AirAsia next for you CE :D

Just read this , is it really true

What do international airlines do with half-finished bottles of expensive wines?
They go down the gurgler before the aircraft lands. Customs regulations prevent incoming aircraft from landing with opened bottles of booze so they're dumped, usually down the toilet.

So looks like I will have to ask every time before landing to make sure the Krug is finished. But the Talisker I have after dinner, really, they pour it down the toilet!!! I'm almost embarrassed the ask for one again. Please tell me this is just journalistic clap trap!

I wonder about that. I've seen partially consumed bottles of spirits rolled out after take-off on plenty of international sectors. I can't imagine they'd have to bin a $600 bottle of cognac after every flight?

As for the advice on business/first class seats for less... I'd say it is rather more than just a 'small' risk.

Yup I have also seen partially consumed bottles of spirits / even wines being rolled out. I would assume some types of alcohols can be kept on the plane for the next flight especially if there is a reasonable quick turnaround.

Perhaps the person who wrote the article only ever fly's Y and therefore never see's the half full bottle's of spirits rolled out. :)

Finally got to sample SQ new F on 228 MEL-SIN Apr 21. I didn't take any pics of hard product as you can easily find plenty online - but just a couple of impressions.

The new F is definitely an improvement in simple 'sitting' terms - seat is softer. The new F still lacks a lot of bling - many would say bland - I say serviceable. One great area of improvement is now ample supply of small to larger storage compartments for all your goodies - you could nearly say too many storage compartments - make sure you thoroughly check all before deplaning. Tray table etc basically same - great plus of SQ F is tray table adjustability - to / fro plus up / down - best I have found.

Lighting took a few mins to master - touch screen IFE control real plus - damn pity I had seen virtually all films though. I also had new F booked 227 on return but last minute sub saw 77W on route so I did not get to try sleeping new F - cannot comment on that.

Overall YES it is an improvement but no great WOW factor - maybe I was expecting too much - by all means would choose new F over old F if schedule suits - but oild F still great product.

Here is menu on 228 - remember this flt dep 15:30 - so I had lunch in SQ F lounge and on board requested to be served as late as possible - est arr time 21:20 I think so requested meal at 19:00 - no problem to crew. The menu:

Fairly typical menu - appeared perfection - and it was until I got to main course which I selected Wagyu Sirloin - it was nothing short of DISGRACEFUL - tough as boot leather and full of grissle - inedible. I did bring ot to IFS attention and asked him to make report to SAA Feedback and Catering. Crew then gave me Blue Eye to top up and it was excellent. Rest of menu:

Now you all know the Dom / Krug combo but equally as important should be the reds:

Now the Teusner Albert Shiraz is not a bad drop - but First Class standard on a 5 Star Airline - hardly justifiable IMHO - I have sent off feed back to SQ advising my thoughts.

I overnighted in SIN so I could take 802 which is Suites SIN-PEK - I love this flight.

Up early - taxi to airport - I love SQ F check-in at SIN - then into TPR - VCLGD / eggs benno / English breakfast tea - what a way to start the day!

802 dep 08:30 has brunch Service - menu here:

These early morning deps SIN are only times I ever BTC - and on 802 I always select 8oz Rib Eye Steak - I have had this quite a few times and it is always superb - mainly because they are clearly confused and dish up eye fillet / tenderloin - always cuts like butter - just superb. Again having eaten brekky at 07:30 you don't want be eating again before midday - that is request to staff and always accommodated - balance of menu here:

And the reds:

I have no idea about any of these reds so simple process to ensure you do get the best is to have a glass of all 3 - then choose your favourite or back onto the Krug - I am very flexible.

Just amazing isn't it - Suites just never disappoint - Suites are Suites - just a fabulous experience.
