SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Just called up to cancelled F bookings brought about by SQ's own scheduled changes.

Out of 4 sectors (to / from AUS via SIN) to EUR, 1 of the 2 affected sectors was changed successfully.

The remaining affected sector (SIN - EUR) had remained on the waitlist for 8 months !

If not changed, I will have arrived in SIN 60 min after the EUR flight departure.

Despite phone calls, emails incl. to AUS head office etc.... it remains uncleared.

I had to cancel all the remaining 3 confirmed sectors today.

So disappointing !

They lost out on a companion PAID J ticket as I opted for the CX alternative (redemption + paid).

The only positive note was that they instantly agreed to waive the $USD30 cancellation fee for both PNRs.

If travelling on an award ticket in F or Suites, are you able to invite a guest into the lounge?

I understand the answer is no for TPR, but what about other F/J lounges, i.e. Sydney.

Looking on the *A website it talks about revenue ticket required

If you hold Gold Suites or Marron First BP then YES you can guest 1 into F Lounges but as you noted not into TPR - commercial or redemption tix same same.

I was due to arrive into SIN from PEK at 22:55 on Mon night and dep 23:55 for MEL - PEK flt 15mins late arriving - deplaned gate A2 - 50mtrs from lounge - raced up to lounge and had shower - as was heading out again lounge staff grabbed me and said your shuttle to dep gate B8 is waiting at bottom of escalator for you Mr Elite - obviously they put 2 and 2 together when checking my BP on entry into TPR - still just no time to collect Changi $s either - bummer on that one but fantastic on the cart shuttle to gate.

How was new F? Or did you end up taking the other flight combination?

First time ever flying SQ this Saturday. 3 week holidays in Austria, Germany and France and I am more excited about the flight than the destinations!

I've only got an hour and half in the TPR on the way over :( but with a 12 hour connection on the return I'll have plenty of time to enjoy!

an hour and a half is about the ideal amount of time i reckon. time for a shower, a meal, and a few quiet drinks.

12 hours - sure front and back end it with TPR, but head into the city where you'll get much better food and things to explore.

Yeah big decision on the return to get Suites all the way. Have booked in at the Crowne Plaza for a day room as a base and then see how we feel.

Now if anybody is dep PEK in R/F or J - there is no need to suffer the totally inadequate BGS F and J lounges - they are the lounges you will be directed to at check-in.

Politely say 'No thanks' - I want to go to Air China First or Business Lounge. The Air China lounges being *A are not off limits to you - whilst still quite ordinary compared to most top class lounges they are still a significant step up from BGS lounges.

Authorities in PEK have again implemented closed bar pre take off policy - this is just lunacy and further reinforcement of China being 'The Land of Complication and Contradiction'!

This has been an on again / off again / on again / off again policy for years ex PEK and just pisses you off. PVG TBMK has never suffered same - but PEK RRPITA.

I did have a fabulous IFS on one flt last year ex PEK who advised me of the policy but then went on to say 'But of course there is nothing to stop me opening that bottle of duty free Krug you bought on board with you (wink wink)'

At check-in in PEK on Mon aft the agent was absolutely 100% definite about giving me a TPR invitation - and I did not ask for one - she went and sought it out from a side counter.

I just mention this as a reference to all first times in SQ R/F - the gold TPR invitations are a fabulous souvenir. If check-in agents does not supply you one make sure you ask for it - if they say they do not have them ask them contact SIN and have one ready for you as a souvenir when you arrive.

So at entry to TPR don't hand over your Invitation - staff are more than happy to leave it with you and you do not require to show it anyway to gain entry as your BP will get you in the door.

Same of course applies to *G flying SQ Y. No harm in taking the BGS pass and trying out both if time permits. But I agree that the CA PEK lounge isn't that great either. The new Air China Lounge in PVG has much better food for starters. I actually think that the CA lounge and the BGS one are pretty similar, although I've only used them flying SQ at night when they're pretty quiet and any possible dinner service has long ended.

Odd. But there are some strange rules, or perhaps just some strange enforcement, here. Haven't flown domestic for six months. Do they still ban using iPhones in flight mode?

Cannot answer - I have not flown dom for >3 yrs - have only visited BJ, TJ, SH and NJ in that period and for travel bw those cities CRH train by far best option.

Fair enough. Just seems really strange that when many airlines are allowing use gate to gate that Chinese airlines seem to go in the opposite direction. Certainly if it was a rule for long haul international flights like CA PEK-MEL, then I'd strongly reconsider whether to fly on a Chinese carrier vs foreign.

I regularly fly CA long haul to/from Australia and am not aware of any mobile device - in flight mode - restrictions. The passenger next to me had their phone on the armrest the entire flight, nothing was said.
