SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Oh thanks for finding that for me MT. Yeah I used Sq miles (transferred from Amex points) to book. Used the amex card to for whatever taxes and fare I could.

Gee lucky I booked as a return trip and not 2 one ways.

How did it go? have you rebooked?

Again, I haven’t read the definitions, but it’s not exactly clear whether two one-ways would satisfy a ‘return’ trip. I think i read further within the PDS that it might be ok with two one ways, but not exactly sure. The better wording found in some PDSs is ‘a ticket to return to Australia’.

surely (b) would cover him.
perhaps he might need to prove he transferred amex points over to the FF program and then booked.

the policy was on my list of things to read as well for my july '19 trip. looks like I was incorrectly assuming that hotel bookings would also qualify us, guess not!
again, (b) should qualify me

Yes it's definitely a required read before flying.

I think there's been one trip I relied on Amex travel insurance where I've booked one way trips only. Lucky nothing happened.

My interpretation also says Two 1 ways will also be covered, that's what I've booked for us.

Nah I haven't. Need all clear from Dr. Possibly tomorrow morning. Until then I can't book.

Did get a WL for tomorrow 12pm flight clear and must be booked by 11am. Really hoping we get the all clear early morning otherwise we'll need to also rebook our SIN-MEL leg.

  1. If on two x one-ways, why not email the insurance provider before you travel and ask them to confirm you are covered;
  2. Always read the T & Cs before travelling (and before purchasing a non-CC policy); on more than one occasion I have found that the policy I was looking at would NOT cover us (for example visiting Cuzco & Machu Picchu as the policy did not cover >2,500m without taking the sports pack);
  3. Most policies require disclosure of pre-existing conditions (+1 was ruled out on a St Geo CC policy recently);
  4. Contact the insurance provider at the first sign of trouble, and follow their instructions.
Apologies if this is a little off topic.

So final update.

In TPR right now. Thank god.

1pm today got travel insurance (via flight centre I believe) to book us a flight out of USM. 4.30pm flight. And the SIN-MEL on sq217 tomorrow morning. They booked us revenue flights, so get to claim some points out of all this, Woo . They also booked Crown Plaza at changi for us.

Anyways, I did manage to speak to another KF call centre agent who advised I would only get charged the no show fees if I wanted my points back. Not going to as I don't really want to end up paying for a full fare OW fare for my trip back.

Also checked the platinum insurance pds, and it does specifically mention one way ticket does not activate the insurance. No mention of 2x one way, so you'll need to clarify with Amex travel insurance before flying.

One last mention: make sure you don't fly with Lea's than 6 months in passport. Missus flew out with 5 months left. Leaving Melb was easy. Check in agent for in MEL made a quick call somewhere and then gave the green light. As long as we travel within expiry date, it's all good. Problem arose ex-USM. Flight centre couldn't book us all on the one itinerary since it was 2-3hrs to departure ex-usm. Had to buy tickets myself and claim back later. Anywho, they [Bangkok airways] wouldn't let us check in. Took nearly 20mins to come up with a solution. We had tickets confirmed for SIN-MEL. They through-checked our luggage and we told them we wouldn't leave airport as there is transit hotel. No proof needed that we booked transit hotel (luckily since upon arrival all rooms in all 3 terminals are booked out). Other option is flight centre book BKK-SIN-MEL on one ticket, which would have been a pain, and then we fly USM-BKK via Bangkok airways.

So eventually got to SIN. Go T1 transit to check vacancy as that was the last place we hadn't checked. No vacancy. Straight to immigration to ask them if we are allowed out. It was a quick Yes, no problems. Means we can use the crown plaza reservation. So thankful we don't have to slum it in the airport for 12 hrs.

Next problem was getting our tickets for tomorrow. Went to the ticket counter inside the terminal. All good until the agent checked the missus passport. Damn! They said they need approval from Canberra to let the missus back into her own country <insert pacepalm emoji>. That just topped the trip off for me. So glad we are nearly home. I rarely miss home when I'm on holidays, but this trip was the first. Can't wait to sleep in my own bed and not need to stress about anything except for going back you work .

Thanks for all the help everyone, especially MT.

Good news!

That's full revenue F then? Not bad.

Can you explain the bit in the quote? What do you mean by 'full OW fare' for the trip back?

What negatives would there be if I had to book Syd to EU as 4 individual redemptions for 1 pax?

None, apart from the increased mileage "surcharge" (47k KF in F or 38k KF in J) of course!
At check-in at SYD they'll find both the SYD-SIN sector as well as the SIN-EUR sector in their system upon scanning your passport, check your bags through all the way and off you go.

Why are you doing it this way?

Source: Recently did a MEL-SIN-MLE trip, with MEL-SIN an award F redemption and SIN-MLE a paid Y fare (completely different PNR of course, it was even on MI rather than SQ). I did call up KF to "stitch" the bookings together etc, and it was found at check-in at MEL no worries. Arrived at MLE with all bags.

Thanks. It's only if I can't find availability.. didn't consider the extra points though..hmm

I can't find 2+J savers @ 355 days out. Anyone else having this issue? this route is PVG-SIN-SYD or HKG-SIN-SYD. I've never had these types of issues before when booking 355days out, I usually score 4 J savers for this route and now I'm getting 0.

I've noticed similar for my usual routes.. a glitch or sign of things to come... :O

Chinese New Year being around ten days earlier next year could be a factor.

I have F CBR - JFK as a saver award. Would like to change it for 2 weeks earlier and only Advantage available (of course), for 295K. I am seriously considering it. Just wanted to share my worry about profligate pts spending. o_O

On another nearby date, Advantage is only 185K points, how can that be so many fewer points?

Just be aware, when changing a reward date as I was, the first thing they do is check to see if any of the points you used on the original bkg have expired.

Well, I paid extra 170K points in Advantage over Saver to get the date I want F CBR-JFK. :(
