SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

I am looking to head to EU later this year. I would like two R seats to where-ever. I can see one on dates that suit, but not two. When I search for two, I am offered a waitlist. Am I better off booking the one seat I can get and waitlisting the other, or waitlisting two seats from the get-go?

Ta.
What's the fall back? Would you be happy if only 1 got R?

I'd want to travel together so I would try get 2x J confirmed then put in for 2x R waitlist

This year I booked one and couldn’t get the second in the same class. Yes it is a first world problem.
i think daft009 is probably correct but it depends on the two who are flying.

Can you book one in R and one in J? Waitlisting both (or even one) is a gamble, as you wont know if anyone is on the list already.

I suggest book the second in J, and call SQ and ask the agent to send a message to the controller for that flight requesting to release the seat. Mention if its a special occasion, they are very empathetic/sentimental I've found. 2 out of 3 flights I've waitlisted and done this, I've been successful. My current booking, no love though.

Yep it’s not easy - dates and seat also a consideration - if J is avail on same flt you could confirm 1 x R and 1 x J as separate bookings and add R waitlist to the J booking then start calling every week and request a chaser be sent off to try to clear the W/L - again no guarantees and you will will still need a fall back plan

In that scenario, would you then phone them and ask them to link the bookings in case of delays?

I would do the booking on the phone, since its essentially a mixed class booking. Agent will likely not even try to charge a booking fee. That way you can sweet talk them during the booking, AND ask them to contact the waitlist controller. :)

I guess another option if one has a few extra points is to book ‘advantage’ for the shorter sector in F, eg FRA-JFK is hard to get in ‘saver’ .

Head chef at SKL MEL Peter has been promoted to lounge Manage in charge front and back of house - he is a legend - I didn’t even recognize home in his suit this morn instead his chef’s attire.

If in SKL F MEL don’t feel constrained by menu - ask them for whatever you desire and they love to try things new - they are trained chefs after all.

Manager Peter has just come back and checked that the Croque Madame was satisfactory - it was sensational - and commented that the chef remembers I have salad and not chips with it - gotta love SQ huh?

@JessicaTam chiming in with my experience:

In ~Oct last year I was trying to get 2 x R for SQ218, the MEL-SIN A380 service for 23 Jan this year (a Wednesday). This was one part of an overall booking that took us to MLE for my wife's and my honeymoon.
To my dismay, only 1 x R Saver was available for immediate confirmation.
So I booked that R Saver for my wife, and an R Advantage for myself, after waitlisting myself on an R Saver.
A few calls to send a chaser must've worked, as 2 nights before the flight the SMS came through that the R Saver had been cleared. So booked the R Saver and cancelled and redeposited the miles for R Advantage.
It might have helped that on the flight, the R cabin only had a total of 5 pax, and it was a Wednesday and also maybe it was shoulder (or peak?) season...
If you have the miles and must fly together in R, I'd strongly suggest this method.

Good luck!!

Edit: I just realised that SQ has a new policy now of cancelling Waitlists that haven't been confirmed 2 weeks prior to departure, so the fact that my WL cleared 2 days prior to departure will no longer be the case. o_O

Thanks all for the responses. I am working on taking my mother to EU. It is probably the last big overseas trip we will take together. Once my long service leave is confirmed I will look at 1xR and 1xJ with the follow up requests for a WL R.

Just when you think you have seen and heard most things - there is a middle aged white male sitting alone in the dining area in SKL F - the dining area is right at front of lounge as you enter - all general seating further in - Lounge Staff Member clears his plate from table and heads to back of lounge to clear other plates - imagine a 4 or 5 second time lapse from her leaving his table - then in a very loud voice he barks out ‘Can I get another coffee please’ - I spun around to see response from Staff and the look on her face was priceless - certainly a first for her also - well is pose he did add please onto the end of request!

The laksa is terrific. Apparently they’re thinking about introducing a la carte laksa to the J lounge, which is exciting (overheard in the J lounge). It’s rare that I end up in the F lounge.
