SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Very nice, Duffa. Did you notice any differences in terms of comfort or otherwise with the re-upholstered seats?
The refurbed R is indeed refurb - seats are not new just new leather. IMHO - refurbed seats are harder to sit on than old - leather is new and therefor less give as yet - crew on one flight did tell me part of squab (internal cushion) had to be trimmed to take new leather - it does feel a bit this way. Apart from that SQ R is still SQ R - nothing better - again IMHO.

What are everyone's thoughts on flying with infants in SQ premium cabins? I guess how "well" your baby flies definitely plays a role. I'm going to be a first time father shortly (next month!) and we are thinking of a holiday next year after I finish a big work exam, to meet up with the family in Europe. My wife will have flown with our little one prior to that time, so we should have a better idea of how she copes with flying. My current plan would be J, as I would feel bad for other passengers in suites if our then 12month old takes some time to settle.

Just interested to here others thoughts!

I'm with Eggsbenedict on this. I have travelled with my 16 month old son 3 times in the last year. Every time in F. It's your trip so you do what is right for you. As long as you are sensitive to the other passengers, as a normal passenger would be, then there is no issue with taking a baby in F/Suites.

I'm surprised by eggsbenedict's report that a passenger in F took exception to the infant for no other reason than the infant was in the cabin? That's poor form :(

Definitely poor form! We have had a few dirty looks but had more compliments about how easy a traveller my son has been. Which has been appreciated because the gentleman and I try and keep our son entertained and relatively quiet as best we can. The SQ crew have always been both lovely and helpful too.

If anyone made rude comments to us directly, the gentleman would not so gentle in his response!

At least you are traveling with your infant! I've seen it on CX a few times where mum and dad (always expats) are in First but ask the crew if it's ok for nanny and baby to come up from economy/business to visit. I'm not sure why they ask... sets the flight up as an uncomfortable one because the crew have to say 'no' and sometimes the parents feel the need to challenge that.

Happened on my SQ J flight too.
One paid J seat; half the ****ing Y cabin up to visit. Granny, aunty and hubby when I stopped counting. Are SQ staff TOO NICE to say no?

Having said that; the baby was just gorgeous and slept most of the flight. Hence, no need to get the rest of the family up.
In fact, I was just able to keep Mrs D seated. She usually approaches the crying baby, asks to take it from distressed mum whilst staying in full view, and then works her magic while said parent enjoys lobster thermidor!!!

Very nice, Duffa. Did you notice any differences in terms of comfort or otherwise with the re-upholstered seats? I read about it a little while ago now, but I can't remember there being any major changes to the hard produce? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Enjoy!
Wasn't me flying, Arrow - was my 20yr old son. I have only flown the old product so can't compare. Having said that, he didn't complain about the seat or the service! I had let him believe he was in Y right up until check-in....

Thanks for the thoughts to all those who have flown with kids. As first time parents, just trying to get as much information as we can to prepare ourselves (although I'm sure you'll never really know until you do it!). Seems like a lot of common sense; if you're considerate of others on board and plan ahead accordingly, doesn't seem like there's a reason to not fly in premium cabins if fortunate enough to be able to.

Duffa - that would have been a very nice surprise for your son! :)

How strict are SQ in enforcing rules re *A partner awards?

Programme Terms and Conditions

2 n. Backtracking is not permitted. Travel must be made via the most direct route.

Looking at booking FRA-xSIN-SYD, going LH F/SQ R.
However, if there is no LH F availability FRA-SIN, would it be possible to route via HKG or HND? I don't know if that is considered backtracking..
HKG and HND are 747-8 and SIN is A380 on LH. Don't want to go via PVG or PEK.
The plan is to lock in suites all the way then change at T-14, so I can experience both products (FRA FCT and 911 rental for EU99.10!).

I'd be going for LH F both ways if you can. Better product overall. If you can score a regular LH 747 even better!

Very interested in how this would work - if you have confirmed rdpt in SQ R FRA-SIN-SYD but then want to change to LH FRA-SIN won't that require you to cancel complete SQ rdpt incl the SIN-SYD leg? Then at T-14 how do you guarantee retaining the SQ SIN-SYD leg to marry with LH FRA-SIN sector?

I have never experienced LH as yet but I have noticed MEL's frequent posts about the quality of their product so would love to try sometime.

Is that how you secure LH via *A at T-14? Is this only timeframe that LH make seats available via *A rdpts.

I asked something similar a while ago:

Yes I would need to cancel and rebook, but let the SQ staff know at the time, that I would want to "keep" the SIN-SYD. Hopefully that wouldn't be an issue.

To book LH F using miles from *A partner programs, you can only book at T-14. Or is it T-15? Anything further out, you need to book via LH's Miles & More program.

What other F routes (to Asia) on *A out of SYD are there, besides SQ to SIN and TG to BKK?

It could well be a problem - if I was you I would be calling KF and clarifying the exact position before proceeding - when you call ask for a Manager and make sure you get there name and Ext No. for reference.

Forgot to mention that MEL SKL might be just a tad busier going forward - UA lounge now closed so UA pax using SKL as are PR pax.

I am considering buying 2 Y fares from SIN-BNE and then transferring VA points to KF to upgrade to J.

Do SQ often have sales for this sector or is there a better website to monitor for good prices ?

You would need to make sure they are the flexi Y fares which are often 2x the cost of a Sweet deals fear so be careful.

I find it easier just to use points outright instead of upgrading.
