Haha, you'll cope!

I hope so. I just think of the unattractive blue boarding pass, the walk of shame into a J lounge, the reduced versions of the food I love, stripey plates, having to rest both my arms at the same time. Fortunately I have already experienced the blue kebaya so that is one less terror in store for me.

Seems SQ checkin in BNE has also moved to kiosks:

I posted about it last year. Hated it and refused to use a kiosk. Did the same again in March this year and a staff member did it on the kiosk for us and opened a closed bag drop for us. Unfortunately I was paying absolutely no attention to him so will do the same again.

Noticed my favourite flight to Europe, SQ326 is being upgauged to A380 in the 2024 timetable covering the Australian winter. If you can snag an F, best way to get from SIN to JFK with a night in Frankfurt enroute.

Why did you hate it? Process is quick and easy, and it seems to greatly reduce , or even eliminate, queues.

I have noticed on my recent trips overseas that these are becoming more and more common with more and more airlines. Most of the time I have found them to speed the process.

I also tend to find that it allows earlier check that when check in is purely manual and minimum check-in periods may be enforced for each flight.

Well you haven't seen the bag drop queues at the SQ checkin at BNE. No matter what class you are flying everyone lines up in the one bag drop queue.
Besides I like talking to the humans at checkin even the grumpy ones. Plus I agree with our Transport Minister in that I want to protect Australian jobs.

While normally I love self service machines (like in supermarkets for example) I still remember when QF started using kiosks for check-in luggage on domestic flights. It was so bad, my bags used to travel all over the country for weeks and there were no AirTags back then to pinpoint their location. Ever since I always try to avoid check-in kiosks when possible.

I wonder how well the kiosk can manage calling Border Farce to get a dual passport override code?

Although I imagine it would do a better job than QF as that's been a nightmare.

I think the issue for me with SQ going down this path is that they have a very diverse passenger profile on flights ex Australia. And many of those people are on complex connecting itineraries, often with visa checks.

Furthermore, Australian airports just have not been designed with the necessary space to transition to this model of check in, which creates bottlenecks galore.

In reality, Qantas was only able to achieve this for domestic flying by totally redesigning their terminals. That was easy for them to do as they hold the exclusive lease to those. Much harder for international terminals.

I’m all for technology, but it has a time and place. I do not think SQ’s technology (or any airline for that matter) is yet at a standard to make this an easier and more efficient experience. And that’s without even debating the merits of what a premium airline’s experience should look like.

In my view, SQ has completely underbaked this - they’re trying to make a square peg fit into a round hole and I wish they’d be less stubborn in accepting it’s just not working.

SQ might like to blame the airports, but that it is not working across several Australian stations would suggest they are not doing a good job of it.

Just another cost-cutting exercise :(

Meanwhile you still can't book the cook for kids meals - Due to Covid
Also the F book the cook menu out of MEL is still the same as J...

SQ probably makes the mistake of assuming other airports can get it working as well as it can at Changi. Never going to happen in Australia. But really what is needed is a hybrid for where document checks are required. Also I’ve said this before if you turn up at 3 hrs before the flight - like most people do - there’s going to be a pinch point where demand exceeds the equipment available. This is different to Changi where there’s much more spread out demand.

Just booked CGK-SIN-MEL in J on daytime flights for next August. The seat plans show a regional A350 on the SQ207 sector :(

Regional config is ok for daytime flights, particularly if you score one of the bulkhead seats.
