SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Now in Angers France so can continue with the report. The crew from Melbourne to Singapore were really the A crew. The three cabin crew all came to see me at the end of the flight (at different times) to make sure I had a pleasant flight and wished me the best for my onward travels. The crew were Edmund, Edmond and Crystal whose smile will forever be in my memories.

Upon arrival i did not realise we were in Terminal 2 (if we were told I had forgotten - blame the Krug and Dom) so took me a bit longer to get to TPR. Upon showing the red boarding pass at the lounge the already outstanding service went up a notch again and I was escorted to TPR. Took a seat at one of the big chairs and asked for a water! After two meals for a 7 1/2 hour flight with wine and Dom and Krug all I wanted was water. There were 4 others in the room. Whist not a member of a private club (unless you count MCC membership) it had all the feel of a private club. Understated yet elegant with attentive service.

After catching up on emails etc went into town by taxi and came back around 9.00pm. Upon arriving back at terminal 3 i got out at where J and Y passengers get out. Walked around to first class check in and was the only passenger there. Upon showing the red boarding pass I was asked if I had an invitation and when I said no was asked if I wanted one. Of course I did and was taken to a desk where one was written out for me in gold handwriting. They put my middle name first and did not have the heart to tell them that. Is the invitation worth it? Of course it is. Whilst I will not show it off will put it away with other keepsakes that make me feel good. Was then escorted again to security where the whole process was super quick. Was amazed the that the escalator bought me out into terminal 3 where the escalator takes you to the lounges. The whole process after receiving my invitation took no longer than 2 minutes. Amazing compared with the shambles that what I had in Melbourne.

Upon arrival at the lounge I then had the invitation to show and again an angel escorted me to the TPR. I had read on others posts about the burger with foie gras and had to try it. It is only a small burger and at 2 1/2 hours before the flight was the perfect snack. Champagne was again excellent. Time for some shopping and then returned to TPR for a shower. Had to wait as the showers were all being used. From memory there were 3 showers and one was out of order. Showers were no different to what I had in the J lounge other than the toiletries. Still had those darn soap dispensers on the wall. If I had any complaint about the TPR it would be they could replace the soap dispensers with either small bars of soap or shower gel.

More to come.

Couple of pts for all to keep in mind:

  • Nothing unusual for SQ flts to arrive into T2 and not T3 - will depend totally on traffic / congestion at time of arrival - MEL flts also occasionally arrive into T1 - gate C1 to be precise - and they rope off the walkway to Sky Train with 100 attendants almost shoulder to shoulder stopping you from wandering off the path. Also quite a few regional flts dep T2 - never seen long haul dep T2. This is no biggie given how easy it is to transfer between terminals but if you have tight connection it is another thing to keep in mind.
  • When taxiing back to Changi from downtown SIN you need to continually ask taxi driver do they know where the F check in drop off is - many don't - many forget in transit - just need to keep your wits about you.
  • The menu in TPR has not changed in like yonks - I continually ask the staff there to pass on up the chain that menu needs refreshing and I also keep sending feedback - not unusual to find better / more appealing offerings out in F Lounge and not in TPR - 2 weeks ago I had lamb shanks in F - they were really food. Easy to just wander out of TPR and check offerings or sit and shoot the s**t with Muhammed at bar in F if you alone or withy thime to kill.

As moffat posted TPR really has that quite relaxed private club feel about it - may not be everybody's cup of tea - but I gotta tell you sitting back in one of those comfy high back chairs with a glass of vintage champers and a bottle of Perrier certainly is my cup of tea!.

Let me explain a couple of scenarios where your TPR Invitation might be 'flashed around' on your return to Australia:

  1. Momma and Poppa Smith have saved $s or pts for years to get to experience F/R experience. On return to Oz they are sitting in their lounge room with sons / daughters / grandkids relating the stories of their holiday and flights. Momma is explaining to all around her how when they arrived at SKL with their maroon or gold BPs they were escorted by a lovely attendant to turn right at entry / walk past attendant at entry to F / weave through F to another special section called TPR where they are treated like royalty with lounge staff buzzing around satisfying their ever want. Momma then goes on to say "We even got our own Personalised Hand Written Gold TPR Invitation" - look kids here they are!
  2. You have a niece who now works in the oil industry in Houston and who now has got tangled up with some oil executive who has traversed the globe for last 20yrs flying virtually solely on US carriers because that is what his company demands - in their conversations she mentions that SQ give out hand written invitations to their R/F pax into a very private lounge called the TPR. Said Yank is oh so typical and believes nothing can better than AA / DL / UA F cause they are American - so niece says hey Unc where is one of those TPR Invitations you have 'souvenired' so I can show Jay this does actually happen?
If a few members here had visions of some tool wandering the streets of Melbourne waving a TPR Invitation above their heads saying 'Look at me - look at me" well I am sorry if I confused you.

I have absolutely no hesitation in posting that the 'Personalised Hand Written Gold TPR Invitation' is one of the best souvenirs that can be had from SQ R or F exp - keep them / throw them in the bin / whatever - I am just trying to help those who will appreciate them and who might not know they should be supplied to ALL R/F pax at check in..

We could be forgiven :D

...

I am tipping the TPR invitation would have been retained and flashed around in front of many people on ret home.

...

it will have your name, the date and flt number hand written on back - fabulous souvenir to make all your friends green with envy.

...

but they are a fabulous souvenir - will make all your friends at home so jealous.

I have F/R confirmed MEL-SIN-PEK next Fri 1tth but I really want to fly Sat 12th - just got off the phone with Elly in KF centre and due to loadings F Savers very tight on popular routes lead up to XMAS - she will do what she can. Elly is ticking all the boxes - I will keep the thread informed as to just when she graduates to 'The Go To Girl' status. Many here know what a valuable asset Crystal was over a long period and several already have received help from Elly - they are not miracle workers but having a personal contact can be such a bonus.

CE thanks for your continuing knowledge.

Me thinks great contacts should be kept private and only used via PM's.

We'd hate for her to get bombarded by AFFer's, especially since Velocity points are so easy to get now and every one there wants to convert them to SG points and then grab our R/F seats.

We need to keep the faith but close to our chests

Continuing with my report. The flight to Amsterdam left from the gates closest to the lounges where you share the departure area with several other flights. This was the first time I had been into this area and around 11.15pm was almost standing room only. Other flights boarded before the Amsterdam flight and even though there were no boarding announcements several passengers tried to board without success. From the talk I could hear they were Dutch and I would expect the Dutch don't like standing in lines.

I joined the F/J line and upon the boarding announcement came around 11.40pm. This time there was no angel checking boarding passes along the line to pull me out! Upon boarding I was again warmly greeted and had my glass of Dom. There were 4 passengers in F (the other 3 were all middle aged males) and we all in the single seats.

Again I BTC with Lobster which I really enjoyed. After dinner and a movie my bed was made up in the seat opposite me (the other passengers slept in the middle as well). I changed into sleeping suit (might not look the best but is very comfortable) and laid my clothes on my other seat. Upon waking I saw my clothes had been placed on hangers. I was hoping to get 6-8 hours sleep but even with two sleeping tablets managed only 4 hours sleep. The other passengers appeared to get near 8 hours sleep.

Upon my return to my seat the cabin crew kept checking on me with drinks (kept to coffee and water by this stage) and enjoyed another movie. Arrived early into Amsterdam and again the cabin crew wished me the best. The areo bridge connected with the J door and not the F door and the cabin crew then blocked the J passengers exit until the F passengers exited. Whilst no complaints about the cabin crew they did not seem to have the warmth and bubbly personality of the cabin crew on the Melbourne flight. Could be the difference between a day time and night time flight.

There were only two immigration booths opened at that time of the morning - one EU passport holders and the other non EU passport holders. There were still passengers from another flight in the non EU line (no express line in Amsterdam) and a few of those passengers were Muslim ladies with head scarves who were all being finger printed which held up the line. Took about 15 minutes to get through the immigration line and by the time I got to baggage area my bags were already there.

Now for some general comments on my first F flight:

777-300 v 777-300 ER - I preferred the 777-300. It had the overhead bins for luggage, the front toilet seemed bigger, and you could walk behind the second row of seats.

Is the gold TPR invitation worth it? - Of course it is for at least first time travellers in F.

Service in F compared to J - Have had 2 previous J redemptions to Europe where I have raved to others about the service I received in J. Travelling in F takes the service to another level.

Some things I wished I had done differently - Should have asked on the second flight if I could have the offered sleeping suit in a smaller size and a female amenities kit as I already had mine from the Melbourne flight.

Would I travel in F again - Yes if saver redemptions were available and I had the points. Need to start planning 30th anniversary trip to Europe for 2017 in R. Not sure if will do as a mixed redemption from Brisbane or F/R redemption from Melbourne or F/R or R from Sydney

Moffat you pretty well nailed it - your dep gate was in A1 to A8 block - these are the prime dep gates - maximises TPR time., With priority boarding just wave your Gold R or Maroon F BP at any agent and they will whisk you to the front.

As for F cabins -I just can't believe SQ produced 77W and 77WN with no o/h - absolute PITA - they did so because they claimed pax wanted easier access to HL - cough - 77WN does have more space under ottoman than 77W does but I still hate having to place HL on floor at your feet.

I always take female amenity kits - Cruiserette gets great joy gifting them to others. Sleeper suits I never use - always BYO Jamie's and bring SQ suits home for old folks home.

So so glad you enjoyed your experience - 'High 5'!

So, what do the wise ones reckon my chances are here - when we flew R to SIN in August, F lounge at SYD was closed for renovations and we were ushered to the J lounge which was packed to the rafters, staff overwhelmed with numbers and unable to keep food topped up, place clean etc - a very disappointing experience. Next Aug we are flying J to Europe and I thought I might ask if we could have access to the F lounge before departure - am I dreaming to think they'd say 'yes'?

And at the risk of sounding like a broken record I have followed up the furnishing of TPR Invitations at check in. I spoke to check in agent in MEL - she claimed she knew nothing of it - RUBBISH.

So I sought out the Senior SQ Staff Member on duty at check in counters and asked her. She admitted YES they used to have some but did not think they were still handing them out - I suggested she check stock levels in their store and she also advised she will be contacting SIN HQ to clarify as if they are not following check in / operation protocols correctly she will get it amended.

At SKL in SIN I got the girls on 'Help Desk' to find the Lounge Operations Manager for me. I spoke to her for about 10 mins - she 100% confirms that ALL ports that have aircraft arr / dep with R / F cabins are required to hand TPR Invitations to ALL R / F pax - this is part of standard protocols and should be adhered to.

She seemed genuinely surprised what I told her about SYD and MEL - she called down to F check in area in T# and spoke to them - she then told me she will personally contact with SQ Operations Mgmt and ensure procedures are correctly followed. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Again the 'Personalised Hand Written Gold TPR Invitation' is a fabulous souvenir and ALL R / F pax are supposed to receive them - no biggie for pax who freq fly R / F but first time / occasional pax these are a sensational souvenir. MEL / Af - you dudes keep throwing them in the bin - others I am sure will love to keep them.

Just watched this guy's F trip report on YouTube and I've never seen someone have so much fun on a plane – I just love it. Is this what you're like Cruiser? ;) Or are you jaded after years of SQ F?

Oh god, I just want to get on an SQ plane right this minute. I still have to endure an entire EY J trip to LHR before my next SQ J/F flights! Life sure is tough :p

KIND OF URGENT

Anyone going thru Changi and can find out for me if the pool (T1 Transit hotel ) is open. When ever I go to the Ambassador Hotel website the T1 Transit hotel does not come up as an option and I remember someone mentioning building works causing it to close a few months ago. Any up dates please. Was planning on spending a few hours there on Sat am this week in an elongated stop over. If it's closed I might take the EY F I can see. Much Appreciated.
