SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Apparently it is open again Danger - would be easier to just call Changi Airport and ask

Many thanks CE. I have called Changi and they had no idea it had been closed. No response to my email to Ambassador either. But you can always find out info here. Thanks again

Question for the brains trust. I have a Waitlisted flight NRT-SIN-SYD at the Saver Level. Checking the site now Saver Level is not even bookable anymore. Checking Expertflyer NRT-SIN is pretty much empty SIN-SYD is about half full. Any thoughts on the chances of this clearing? Is there anything you can do to move it along like call up (no status with SQ) The booking is for the Nanny and we are already confirmed would this help at all?

Nothing you can do Eggs except call and politely ask if they will send off a request to see if can get confirmed.

Only yesterday I had a Saver Waitlust confirm when Saver availability showed Not Available on web site

Thanks CE good to know there is a chance, I have just waitlisted a Y Saver to cover bases. Worst case will be a cheap J* flight

Did that waitlist confirm after calling up?

No Kangol - I was conf on 833 dep 16:25 in R but arr back into MEL at 10:05 next day - I was also w/l on 831 in F dep 13:50 arr back into MEL couple hours earlier - 831 Saver w/l did conf and I quickly did dummy search and it showed Not Available - I did not call them - I decided to stick with R on 833 anyway so I just cancelled 831.

Just got off my first ever EY J flight and wanted to share some quick observations and comparisons with SQ whose J product I know best (travelling solo so no one to chat with about it!).

Seat – EY's 77W J seat isn't terrible, probably better than I expected, but has nothing on SQ's J seat. I love those Diamond mini-suites.

Food – definitely average. Was missing SQ's dining. Partly because of quality, and partly because of the somewhat impersonal service style.

Service – Worlds apart. In EY J, you definitely feel like a second-class citizen (with F on board). You're treated well, but you still feel like just another passenger in what isn't a very big cabin. On SQ, you feel like the only passenger on the plane in J and I think I've taken it for granted. You're addressed by name from the get-go – the EY FA actually asked for my name. Could he not just check the manifest?

I wasn't checked up on at all, and dessert was completely forgotten about so I actually went into the galley, asked for cheese and had it handed to me on the spot. I carried it back to my seat.

For supposedly comparable products, I know where I'll continue to fly. Even with the lounge spa and chauffeur service, it all comes down to the people and the culture just isn't there for EY.

It has its faults, but I love my SQ.

Now check this - just checked in at PVG to fly back to Oz - PVG / PEK ALWAYS furnish R / F pax with TPR Invite - ALWAYS. Why so hard for MEL and SYD?

But there is one prob with above pic - who can spot it - clue flt combo is 833 / 237?

Correctamundo Danger - I was given Suites BPs for both an R and an F sector - this is a serious breach of procedure in SQs eyes as the last thing they want is pax confusion as to exactly which class they will experience on board.

I personally saw a situation on board 218 pre dep from LEL when a quite elderly female pax put on a real turn because the F cabin was not the same as the pictures her friend showed her and told her was F - I take it the friend was confused and showed pax R pics - whatever the facts were this lady was really upset.

So at check in if do be vigilant and note that BP colours do actually match the correct class - I had Maroon BP handed to me in MEL on dep this trip when my connecting flt 802 was on 380 - so its really not uncommon. Check in agents can really get their klakkers toed if they make these mistakes so you are not out of line by pulling them up on the spot - this is correct combo:

If that was true - it makes a mockery of SQ's business class.

SQ issues a standard blue boarding passes for their complete range of business class offerings... which includes angled lie-flats on the A330. If SQ was actually concerned about the boarding pass removing confusion, they'd have a different colours for A330, 773 refurb, A380/77W, and 77W new business class.

I would be perfectly happy with red BPs for both suites and F class. I don't think it really makes much of a difference. You select suites at the time you make your booking - you don't wait until you get your boarding passes at the airport to find out which product you might be travelling in.

For like the 1,000th time I whole heartedly apologise MEL if my postings don't meet your approval. Feel free to check with SQ at any time and post all and any information which renders info I upload for others benefit as incorrect, misleading or fictitious.

If (when?) I fly Suites, I would like something special. It is treated as higher than F by SQ so why not recognise it?

My post had nothing to do with your reporting. It was a comment directed to SQ. If SQ thinks this is a serious breach of procedure and confuses passengers, that position is somewhat inconsistent with their treatment of business class which has a greater variance in product offering, and more likely to be confusing.

Suites were considered something different when they first came out, and they had a new line of in-flight service items and menus to reflect that. Suites also commanded a surcharge in price for a short time. These days, the hard product (enclosed suite) is the main difference, and fares are the same as standard F. Seat aside, I'm not sure I could tell them apart. The crew represent the main difference between SQ and other airlines. And they are equally as good on suites or F.

No matter which way you try to butter it - R is a substantially better product than F - F on WN seriously good - but compared to Suites it's kinda like comparing me and infinity in the looks stakes - no comparison really.

But it of course that is my opinion - others may and do hold different opinions.

The screws are being tightened on Changi $ eligibility also - as many would be aware previously if you booked 2 x o/w rdpts you could claim the SD40 vouchers on each leg - now not always.

Rules were changed on April 1 that if you booked return flt to your home country before dep from home country then that would render you ineligible to receive SD40 voucher on both legs - you are eligible to receive Changi $ vouchers once only.

Today was the first time I had been pulled up and denied the vouchers - I do not know extent of info that agents can see on screen but clearly they can identify your movements. My return flt yesterday was confirmed prior to my dep from MEL on Dec 12 - as late as 12hrs pre my ret from PVG I almost changed flts to new Saver rdpt on 831/227 - but just decided against it because 833 gave me another R sector - had I done so the new booking made post my original dep would have qualified for receipt Changi $ vouchers.

As I said first time I have been pulled up - as late as 3 weeks ago I collected vouchers both ways - others may also collect both ways but if you are denied on your return journey you will know why.

That is a shame CE. I always make my bookings 2 OW transiting SIN to ensure I receive 2 X SD40 vouchers... will get to test this early Jan dep Mel-mid Jan arrival to Mel.
