SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

I'm looking at a flight from USM-SIN. It's only 2hrs via Silk Air. Not flown with them before. Y redemption is 10625miles cf J redemption at 17000miles. Is it worth it, or should I save my miles for a longer flight??

it's an expensive flight - USD220+ one way including tax for indirect flights, or close to USD300 for non-stop. Would depend if 10,000 miles plus whatever the award taxes and fees are worth the saving to you. It's one of those flights for me I'd seriously be considering using miles for.

Trying to sort out a trip back to MEL in July with a stopover in SIN. Really wish that SQ would restore SQ803.

It is rather expensive fare for cash and I'm definitely using miles. Just wondering if it's worth J for only a 2 hr flight. I'm not aware of any facilities like lounges for Silk Air at USM or what other perks are of flying J on Silk Air.. My gut feel is to just use miles for a Y redemption.

On that route you are paying THB 2,010 (Y) or THB 2520 (J) in ++ on an SQ award.

e.g. An economy award will set you back 12,500 miles (10,625 with 15% online discount), THB 2,010 (~55 USD).

If a one way revenue fare costs ~$300, then the award is "saving" you ~2.3 cents per point, which is "okay" value.

Oh, well - yeah. Silkair is a 'full service' carrier, but the offering doesn't look amazing. The main difference is the extra legroom and wide seat.

I'm just wondering, I have made a suite saver award redemption booking from MEL-LHR but need to get to JTR. I was looking at booking a single O/W flight from LHR-JTR on Aegean. Am I able to get SQ to book that for me and add it to my ticket somehow so bags can be transferred straight to the next plane without me picking them up?

Or is the only option to book separately and exit immigration/pick up bags/customs then re-enter? If so, how much connection time do I need to spare to book the next flight for LHR-JTR?

If the two airlines have an agreement and can through-check bags, it matters not if you are all on one booking or have two separate bookings and tickets. Simply present both tickets at check-in and ask the bags to go through to JTR.

No need to waste time in advance calling SQ or trying to arrange anything, takes 30 seconds at the airport.

Flew J MI SIN - USM return January 2014 receiving great service albeit for flights under 2 hours. We were able to use the 'cosy' TG lounge at USM - definitely not one to get to the airport early for.

Our travel agent booked us an SQ plane rather than Silkair to KL...travel times were quite similar.. and looking at the planes at the gate I am so pleased they did... Silkair looked to be a 737 (or equivalent) SQ was an A330.. I am not an expert (haven't flown silkair) but based on my domestic Australian travel I find the smaller the plane the less comfortable the flight... and of course there is better upgrade availability on a big plane...

That's good news. Agean is *A, so I assume that it shouldn't be a problem? or will I find out at the airport?
Thanks MEL!

Also, I am in Paris until the flight home ex-CDG on the 7th and was debating whether I should extend the holiday by 1 day and fly out ex-ZRH on the 8th at 11.45am instead as there is no other R saver availability in CDG/LHR/FRA for the next few days. Would it be too much hassle flying to ZRH to fly home from there just for an extra day in Paris? We've been once before, but felt like we were being lazy and didn't get much done. Now we have a wedding in Paris on the 5th, so we will have the 6th free and possible 7th free if we extend. The days before the wedding we feel will be spent mostly with our friends, so not much time for just the missus and I until after the wedding.

There's a flight on Swiss airlines that arrives in ZRH at 8.10am, so should be plenty of connection time, approx 3.5hrs between landing and departing. Should I be getting my luggage checked through to SYD or pick up luggage then check in again at the SQ F/R counter in ZRH? Will they allow the luggage to be checked through to MEL via SYD on Virgin flight?

One last thing :D , as I'm flying in R and the luggage allowance may be different if booking Y on Aegean, how does the baggage check through work if I'm over the limit for Aegean flight and I may be over my allowance?
Same question in regards to my returning Virgin flight: SYD-MEL.

Can I get SQ to book my SYD-MEL flight on VA to keep suites baggage allowance?

Sorry for all these questions, just wanna figure this out now rather than later and stress out at the airport. Would normally fly direct to destination, but hard to do if you're after Suites redemption's only.

Ordinarily it's safe to assume *A->*A can through check. There are some exceptions... like Lufthansa can't through check bags to Air China at Shanghai... even if on the same ticket. That's probably an airport thing. I included the note 'if allowed' just to cover all eventualities.

Bottom line however is that if they can through-tag the bags, they will - and there is nothing to be gained by trying to organise anything prior to arrival at the airport.

Baggage isn't my strong point so I'll leave that to others with experience.

Usually the Y meals on Silk get a hell no from me, Ive had the smell put me off before I even get to find out whats on the menu but hubby says the food is OK but he'll eat anything. Last time I flew them was J and the meal was really nice but I suspect it was more because of its place of origin (Chengdu China) and the FAs do a great job, being the poorer cousins to SQ must be hard some days.

I have 3 flights with them in about 8 weeks time, Im sure the food will be... interesting.

Yes - if stopover in SIN and re-enter via F checkin they will automatically offer you a new TPR invite - if you already have one issued at dep port with your original BP - remember separate B/Ps for each sector - just leave original one hidden and flash your B/P - that'll do the job.

Excuse my ignorance Cruiser as never attained lofty F, but what is TPR?

Bit of annoyance: transferred points over to SQ and now Y seats are waitlisted but J is available. Ended up booking J as I don't want to risk paying for Y. What a waste of valuable time by you guys. Thank you muchly. I'll give a review of the J seats on my return:)
