SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

In the late '70's and '80's as a young engineer I visited Singapore regularly. Initially I would have to pin my hair up to get through immigration. Sometimes they would hand you scissors to trim some off before granting you entry!
Raffles would sometimes be an early evening destination on the way out for the night which would entail a 'Sling in the garden bar and a cigar. A tray displaying an of cigars would be presented and you selected your poison. The cigar-man would snip the end off with a cigar cutter and light it for you. A peek back into the last vestiges of a Colonial colony life.
I went looking for that Garden Bar last time I was there, but it seems to been enveloped! I do recall taking photos of us at the top of the spiral staircase to nowhere.....wearing umbrella hats and sunnies at some evening hour!

the last thing I recall of that evening was partaking in rickshaw races in the lobby (using the decorative ricksha a that was stationed there).......

The first and second champagnes of the evening. CE your mate at the F bar was rather abrupt serving the VC '04.

We have been told an empty cabin besides the 2 of us and hoping it sticks so we can have 2c/d made up as bed from the get go. Nice way to cap off the honeymoon. Now who's in the market for some teddies? ;)

A quick questions - grateful for any advice experiences. How flexible are SQ when you have long layovers at SIN to get on an earlier flight? I am on an award ticket (Aviance Lifemiles) and if there is a reasonable chance of going on an earlier flight, I can just do hand luggage.

Thanks in advance

You can ask. Your chances will be greatly improved if there is an operational need to move you (full flight on your original plane for example).

In general airlines are not receptive to voluntary requests to move partner award tickets, they will usually refer you back to the issuer.

Whenever I have suggested that I might 'help them out by flying forward', (an earlier flight), They see it's a reward bkg and there's nothing they can do.

We where flying SQ R on a reward booking and had a long layover (12 hours or so) in Singapore, shortly after we entered TPR we where asked if we wanted to get an earlier flight. Might have been operational though as we stayed on our original flight and suites was completely full. However did ask when flying J though Singapore and again with a long layover they looked and said the earlier flight was full so no go, nothing about being on a reward fare.

Hmm, this is interesting, I'm in R on a reward and will be in the TPR going on to LHR and a connection to OSL. So, just wondering what the SQ F lounge is like in LHR in case I'm offered an earlier flight is it worth taking it to experience another really nice lounge to wait in, or is LHR not a jot on the TPR?

A few days after booking Y + points upgrade to J (and only a week out from departure), I rang and asked if I could bring my flight forward 12 hours and it was readily done without any issue at all.

We're discussing two different scenarios here. One where pax have booked through kris flyer, holding award tickets issued by SQ for travel on SQ. That's a different case of booking SQ via a partner such as Lifemiles. The former gives you a slightly better chance of standing by (although not always - AA didn't allow me to change to an earlier flight last year even though they issued the ticket and there was space available).

cruiser - what's the deal with the changi transit hotels? is it cheaper to turn up and get a room walk up than it is to book in advance? can't find the pricing you mentioned a few pages back for a stay this week.

Same same bre-book or walk up - T3 and T2 that is - NFI for T1 as different operator - TheEmu could answer that as he stayed there couple months back when T2 and T3 full. The room I had in T3 on Sun Mar 27 1am to 7am was really good - smallish double bed / great shower / clean and tidy - just perfect for 6hr kip - A$90 is excellent value IMHO - details here - Changi Ambassador Hotel

You risk being told they are booked out if you turn up without a booking.

We're there on Thursday night, going to try T2 for the first time.

As a reference - price I was given for day room at Changi Crowne Plaza for last week was $211SGD including taxes.
