SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

PS; the Northern Lights are spectacular this far north tonight.

Interesting. I had not thought of this and am booked on this flight in 2023.

Is one side of the flight better for viewing?

EDIT. Google would suggest the left may be better. Were you on the left or right?

On SQ22 pick the A seats as that faces north. However my understanding is that it’s unusual at this time of year to see them.

Interestingly SQ21 EWR-SIN operates through Europe and the Middle East (well it did today, anyway). True round the world service!

Yes Google indicates that as well, including for when I fly in June.

Normally I book my wife and I in the middle 2 seats, which I have done for our flight. But I might just move them over to 14/15A (the left) just in case.

Just done a day flight Sin to Bne. In J satay service started 1.45 hours after take off and meal service nearly 3 hours after take off. Crew chatting in the galley for a lot of the time. Surprised and unimpressed.

Is it possible to pay cash or seek an upgrade through mySQUpgrade on award tickets?

I'm looking to book an economy Saver award from MEL-SIN-MXP return for May/June next year (for which there's plenty of availability). As the SIN-MXP leg leaves at an ungodly hour, I was hoping to be able to pay cash to upgrade that one leg to business class as I won't have enough KrisFlyer miles to get the return airfare AND the upgrade (if one even becomes available, which seems unlikely).

(Sorry for the noob question, but my Googling skills have sadly failed me.)

hmmm… did they then try to serve the arrival meal a couple hours later because it was now the mandatory 2.5 hours before arrival?

My luggage didn't make it to MXP with me but was left in SIN.
Should arrive with tomorrows flight (1 day late) and I was promised it would be couriered to me.
To their credit they did give me compensation (cash) to buy any necessities for 1 day.
As promised got a call from courier company at noon and bag delivered intact at 7pm this evening, 180km from MXP (at least it was not left in a room somewhere). Courier, poor bugger, had another one to deliver 20 ks up the road then was going back to Milan. Long day on the road with mad Italian drivers.
My theory when visiting Italy is that if you visit with low expectations (i.e. things don't work, are never easy, ques not respected, strikes, etc, etc) then most of the time you will be pleasantly surprised and therefore have a good holiday!

I fly to SIN on SQ246 on August 30th - seat map is showing no seats available and the flight cannot be book as revenue J, so it looks like it's overbooked.
I went to "manage my bookings" to turn on auto check-in but the option is no longer there!
I'm concerned if the flight is overbooked and enough people already turned auto check-in on I'm going to be bumped... anyone experienced the auto check-in option disappearing? Can I turn it on my calling the SQ call centre?

i'm booked in on the same flight for Sep 2 connecting to SQ308 to LHR. I can't turn on auto check in for any of my 2 sectors to LHR but i can for the return. I do however have a seat selected as i paid for seat selection as i'm in Y

I also have a seat selected (in J) - I wonder if a likely change of equipment between the 2 A350 configurations could trigger the "freeze" in auto check-in? Anyway I shall set my alarm at the -48hr mark just to be sure my allocated seat turns into a real one :)

Currently in the SKL J lounge in Changi and I really like it!
8.40pm and still plenty of seats available.

just a pity they are out of toothbrushes in the showers :(
I’m here too! (Terminal 3)
There’s only half the people here compared to the same time (late evening peak) two months ago.
Enjoyed a pre departure champagne on the flight over too (had to request) and they had printed menus.
All up, a much more pleasant experience!

In late sept/early Oct I've got 3 A350 flights and all seem to be on regional layout. Syd - Sin, Sin DXB and DXB-Sin. Are Sing mostly flying this layout or have I just been unlucky?

I have 4 A350 flights on Sept BNE SIN HAN SIN BNE with 3 on regional layout.

SQ is operating the 350 Medium haul aircraft on longer sectors than many of us would have expected. It's operating 3/4 flights to MEL, 2/4 to SYD and 2/3 to BNE. It's also doing DXB as you note, as well as nearly all flights to Japan and Korea.

Hopefully this will change as more A380s and B777s return to flying. They also have another five or so A350s with the long-haul config to be delivered this year.

Agreed. Oh no. Could've had someone to chat to for a bit. Only so much work I could do lol.

Really liked the coughtails from the bar. And the Laksa was yummy

Had to ask for slippers and eye masks on both my flights which was fine, better not to waste so I'm not fussed in asking.

Yeah the regional A350 from Sydney sq232 is a bit squishy when I've experienced the long haul A350

I was impressed with the coughtails last time. Except it was so full I had to stand leaning up against a wall!

Hopefully the regional product dies off for Australia soon enough. It’s always been long haul config on the JNB flights (although I guess that’s a touch further).

Could have something to do with lack of crew available and unexpected high loads during the present period. The Regional (Medium Haul) version has 303 seats against 253 for the Long Haul version. Both have a similar number of Business seats (40 against 42) but the regional version has no PE so significantly more Y inventory to sell.

They are also more fuel efficient than the older 777s, and definitely the 4 engine 380s.

So more bums on seats rather than crew issue in this case
