SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Had the same on Sun night. Asked the FA if it was altitude that flattened the fizz but he said, no, likely to hv been an old bottle.. always thought they had to surrender opened bottles to customs on arrival?

With their high turnover I doubt it was an old bottle. They must waste so much money dumping flat champagnes as they leave bottles open, sometimes for hours.

Btw, great tip on Mat’s Pasta plus Shiraz. Was yum 😋

It doesn’t quite scream “first class”, does it?

Maybe not but it was tasty. Let’s face it, most if not all BTC options in F/R Ex AU are also available in J. SQ don’t really have signature first class dishes apart from certain things on the onboard menu.

When I asked why he doesn’t use stopper he said SQ don’t provide despite many requests over the years and some FAs actually bring them from home. For a moment I thought he was joking but he wasn’t.

Very odd, as they do have stoppers in lounges! (Well certainly do in the Rare in the T3 F lounge).

I'm quite happy to have BTC hawker market food ex SIN - even though it may be inexpensive, it is also hard for me to get in Australia. But pasta with sausage and tomato sauce is the kind of thing I would expect to cook myself as a lazy midweek meal, or to find served in Y or sitting in a bain-marie in a rather domestic tired lounge.

I think it doesn’t matter what you eat or drink in F as long as you like it. When I see pax drinking coke or other sugary drinks with their meal I don’t get it, wouldn’t drink this cough anywhere myself but each to their own.

I am one of those unicorns that prefers no wine/soft drink/beer when having fine dining.
I find drinks other than water are a distraction for the food

Looking for some input regarding flights back from Istanbul or Frankfurt. How does the A350-900 J stack up v A380-800 J in terms of comfort ? I have been on the A380-800 a few times but never the A350-900. Trying to toss up what port to return home from next year.

So I’m onboard 208, woke up from a nap and asked for glass of Krug. FA brings a bottle almost full, starts pouring but immediately apologise it’s flat and opens another one. When I asked why he doesn’t use stopper he said SQ don’t provide despite many requests over the years and some FAs actually bring them from home. For a moment I thought he was joking but he wasn’t.

The only reason I can think of is maybe to avoid situations where crew takes home opened bottles but it makes no sense as they can bring their own stoppers. Such an unnecessary waste!
I'm sure you assisted in trying to reduce the waste. 😂

My personal preference is the A380. The 2017J seat space is more spacious. The screen is also better quality.
Something about the A350 2013J seats space that can feel a bit claustrophobic.
That said, I would take either any day.

Frankfurt with the train line is very handy.
The new Istanbul airport is wonderful, but it is a bit of a hike from Istanbul centre by taxi or bus. The area around the airport is under-developed and the new hotels are out in the middle of nowhere.
However, if you have time and can stay a couple of days in Istanbul then you must stay in this amazing city.

I haven't flown in J on SQ at all, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. But the advantage with J on the 350 is that it is the highest class or travel - whereas in the 380 you'll know that there are other pax having much more fun, and the cabin crew will know that you cheaped out.

Great point! I wonder if any of this goes through their mind, but it would be near impossible to block out that thought!

Wines were almost the same as on 208 just the Aussie white replaced with Chablis and red with another Bordeaux.

Reporting from the less glamorous parts: whY.

Just completed a couple of short intra Asia sectors with SQ, CGK-SIN-BKK and return a few days later, so here’s a couple of random thoughts:

- added VA SG number to booking and it was reflected on boarding passes.
- no SQ lounge in CGK so no lounge invitation statement on that first flight boarding pass and “no lounge access” stated by check in agent. I asked them if I could show *A Gold status at the lounge and access that way whilst keeping VA on the flights. Not possible: have to have the lounge invitation on the BP. Once agent understood what I wanted she put my *A number in the booking, reprinted the boarding pass with the invitation statement, then went back in and returned the VA number. Lounge access no problems and flights credited to VA within two days!
- There is an SQ lounge of sorts at CGK T3. Enter the Saphire lounge as directed and get checked by their staff, but then get directed through that lounge area to an SQ only area at the far end (effectively a separate decent sized lounge). There was an extra staff member checking for SQ boarding passes.
- The aircraft on the CGK-SIN leg (A350-900) and return between same cities (B777-300) had Y+ product but it wasn’t being sold, so was available as a paid option for Y pax. I have no idea if SQ status pax get access to the seats preferentially/no cost.
- Y+ seats on both aircraft types still felt pretty cramped and I would not pay for them outright or upgrade to them for long haul or overnight.
- Y seat when adjacent seat (middle) was filled on A350-900, was uncomfortable. Even on just a short flight.
- Y seat on B787-1000 felt better than A350-900. Moreso when adjacent seat (middle) was vacant as the seat neighbour moved over to vacant aisle when crew announced boarding complete.
- I find the SilverKris lounge BKK is consistently good.
- SQ KrisFlyer Gold lounge T2, STILL has the toilet facilities outside the lounge.

Most annoying part of the whole trip… work paid for the flights and before travel, when quote was obtained for me to confirm flights were acceptable (quote was flex Y), I could see discount J for sale through the SQ website for a cheaper price. But apparently that was not possible, so we paid a higher price for me to have a less comfortable journey. 🤷‍♂️

I never understand why businesses do that. Policy says you can't fly J, so we will cut our noses off to spite our faces and pay more to stick to policy!

Forgive me father for I have sinned ..................... I have crossed across to the dark side - I need to be in PEK on or about Oct 6 and leave PVG on or about Oct 14 and not a sniff of SQ rdpt inventory - so comm tix:

SQ J - MEL-SIN-PEK/PVG-SIN-MEL Oct 06/Oct 14 - $13.2K
CX J - MEL-HKG-PEK/PVG-HKG-MEL Oct 05/Oct 13 - $6.4K

Because as soon as you permit that flexibility, employees will become experts at sniffing out the flights that have J priced cheaper than Y and scheduling trips around that.
