Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

To clarify, yes, it would be one friend per trip (though I just discovered I have a CL friend that barely travels... if I can convince them to come it could certainly change a few things!)... assuming that doesn't happen though, and now that I know you can't add bundles to a matched fare, is the SYD QP 'reprint' option still reliable? For the ~7hr QF8-JQ35 transit, I suppose I'd be willing to give up 30-60 mins of lounge time to receive the points & SCs (as I may do this trip with several different friends, so it would start to add up), though if this option is still a bit hit-and-miss, I'll just wave goodbye to the JQ35 SCs - as it's not worth the risk of having to just sit in the Dom J lounge instead of the F lounge until check-in opens! If travelling back on JQ30 the next day, I could still book directly with JQ (as the chances of me making it >3hrs before departure are slim), so it wouldn't be a total loss haha! Though if QF and JQ PNRs can be linked for BP purposes, the problem would be solved (ignoring the lack of a price match) :)

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Just be careful you don't do what did for the double F Lounge run.

Print out both boarding passes in MEL for both JQ36 (MEL-SYD) and JQ35 (SYD-MEL), then upon arrival into Sydney, don't clear customs and head directly to the F Lounge (There's no transfer area in SYD, you just get off the plane, get re-screened and your in the main terminal).

Upon arrival back in MEL Immigration wanted to have a chat about where I disappeared for a few hours, thankfully the rubber gloves didn't come out.

Not that I'm encouraging that sort of behaviour, but the chat with immigration took 5-10ish minutes, much shorter than going landslide to get another BP and clearing security/immigration again. ;)

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

So I just wanted to confirm the 'process' for JQ35 SYD-MEL with some of our more experienced travellers to maximise F-lounge time before I do it on 3 Aug! OLCI for JQ35 and print out what ever is required, head to T2 QP and ask if they can print me out my JQ35 boarding pass with D sticker telling them I'm already checked in...is that correct? And can I do this before the normal three hour window?

I'm coming down from Newcastle on the train so I can get to T2 as early as I need so I can spend maximum time in the F-lounge!

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

T2 wont have D stickers, you will need to get that from the F checkin.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Hi Flying Melb to Sydney and back for F Lounge Run on said JQ Flights If we do OLCI can we go to the first check in area in Melbourne and get our boarding passes for both flights?

I'm not a plat just a lowly SG, so I guess I'll just line up early and hope to be one of the first check in then instead of doing it the other way...I'm using a guest pass to get into the F-lounge

Earlier this year we received the D stickets at the T2 QP - they had to go digging in a cupboard.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

I'm headed down to MEL next week on JQ35. Can anyone confirm if JQ actually open at 3 hours prior or do they drag it out to later than that (2.5 hours or worse)? Is there still a dedicated line for D pax at customs? I haven't done a domestic intl leg for a whole bit if I recall correctly there was a special lane for D pax that was basically empty while the remainder was full.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

For customs head to far right - APEC/crew/D stickers
JQ have generally been prompt on opening time.

I noticed earlier this year that there was no longer a special lane for D in MEL & SYD when I used emigration at those venues.

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Just did Syd Mel yesterday. Checkin was open for business customers approx 3 hours before departure but for us in economy they did not start processing till around 2.5 hours prior - the checkin staff were at the counters for a good 20 minutes or so and I was not sure why they did not start serving pax. There was only a special lane for D pax on arrival in Mel. This was also the case when going Mel Syd.

Oops I was planning on doing the same when we do the JQ36-JQ35 run on 21 July, so thanks for the warning. We are going to go to the J lounge in Melbourne as there are three of us and i only have one extra F lounge pass that we'll use in Sydney. So I wonder if there is any chance that we can get both boarding passes in Melbourne (will do OLCI beforehand). If not then best bet is to head to a Jetstar service desk in Sydney?

You do realise there is a group of AFF members doing the same that weekend, strength in numbers ;)

Yes, i did hear a rumour there may be a few other AFF members in the lounge, so for those of you in the Sydney lounge, if you see a group of three women having lunch (one of whom has quite a loud laugh!) please come and say hello.

You could always arrange to meet the group as they might have some spare guest spots available.

Technically speaking if taking two international flights domestically then you only need the 'D' sticker on the 2nd boarding pass eg in the case of QF8 to JQ35, as MEL is where you'll be clearing customs you only need the 'D' sticker on the JQ35 boarding pass. While it's not inconceivable to travel BNE to MEL via SYD, travelling MEL to SYD to go back to MEL may not only confuse the airline checkin people but customs too.

If you do get both your boarding passes in MEL it's probably easier to get the orange 'D' stickers on both then clear customs at each port.

I don't know how the customs computers work but I'm guessing that it's almost like the reverse of what happens when you board a flight ie if pax who have checkin in but fail to board a flight their names appear on the airlines computer so they know who to page whereas customs see the names of people who have been checked in by the airline & processed by customs as travelling domestically on an international flight but have failed to 'arrive' at their destination.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

My partner and I are flying MEL-xSYD-DPS on Wednesday, with a deliberate ~5 hour transit in SYD so we can enjoy lots of F Lounge time (only second time for me, and first time for her!). MEL-SYD is on QF (JASA) and SYD-DPS is on JQ. Each segment is on separate a PNR, but QF have "linked" the two via an information segment on the QF booking (JQ flight shows up if I manage the QF booking online). We will be checking bags. And in case it complicates things any, the SYD-DPS was originally Y but has been upgraded to "J" this week via an "upgrade for $199" offer from JQ.

A couple of questions around this:

1) From info in this thread and on the JQ website it is clear that QFd and JQi will interline our bags if both flights are on the same PNR. Will they still interline our bags with the two flights on different PNRs?

2) Assuming yes to #1, will QF print both our QF and JQ BPs when we checkin in MEL (i.e. do you just get both BPs immediately as standard practice in our situation)? Or will we just receive our QF BPs, and have to resort to some of the strategies suggested in this thread to get the JQi ones early?

Thanks.

AFAIK, one cannot do OLCI for JQ domestic flights leaving from the international terminal on its own (unless you are coming from another domestic flight arrving at the international terminal). Has this changed recently?

I travelled through SYD in late June (on QF 81) and there was still a special lane for domestic passengers, as moa999 pointed out, it is located at the far right of the customs hall.

you can do online check in for JQi flights. However you can't print a boarding pass and need to ask for a reprint of the boarding pass at the airport. The benefit is that airport people are more likely to reprint a BP than they are to actually do a check in earlier than 3 hours.

Is it possible to reprint JQi BPs after OLCI from the dom terminal to bypass the int lines? (ie in MEL where it is a "short" walk away)
Or are the dom lines often much longer than the int ones meaning you may as well just go to the int terminal in the first place...?
