Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

It does feel kind of awkward, lest of all the several knockbacks to polite requests I received that was the genesis of this thread. However, that was international.

This was the first time I have tried on a domestic segment leaving from an international terminal.

In T2 lounge now with BP, about to head to T1.

Was told 'can't check you in'. I replied "I am already checked-in, just need BP please. :D".

With all this talk of the SYD T2 QP being able and willing to do this - I have to ask....

What about the SYD T3 QP???

I arrive into SYD from CNS on QF into T3. Seems a bit convoluted to go to T2 to get the "reprint" then back to T3 to get the transfer bus to T1..??

T2 are trained and have access as they have JQ pax, I don't believe T3 has been successful. I think I have done it three times now and in each case the QP staff could not be more obliging as opposed to JQ staff that generally exhibit the work to rule ethic where if it's not in the job description its not happening.

Thanks Markis.

For an extra 2 hours of lounge time - T2 it is :)

Why not attempt OLCI on the JQ website then see JQ in CNS & ask for a reprint there prior to boarding your CNS/SYD flight so all you need to do in SYD is proceed directly from T3 to T1 on QF shuttle bus?

IIRC the QP in CNS have access to the JQ Navitaire system so they should be able to reprint the boarding pass, if not just visit the JQ Service Desk & ask them for a reprint as you've already checked in. ;)

I think a lot of both QF & JQ staff get hung up over checking someone in more than 3 hours prior to departure when the only reason why they can't is because they don't want to send bags down that early. I can understand that there isn't always a huge amount of space in the baggage makeup areas for more than one airline to accept bags simultaneously as each airline would have barrows, trolleys & containers all around the baggage belt out the back so they can load luggage straight off the belt onto the barrows etc.

It seems that instead of understanding the checkin process as a whole they find it easier to just say no to all early checkin requests rather than thinking it through & understanding that giving out a boarding pass for pax with carry on only doesn't interfere with the baggage process out the back.

I had this happen when I tried to check in early for QF009 last year. She could have given me my BP but couldn't accept my bags.. was a pain as i had to wait another 2 hours. Couldn't even wait in the J lounge as I couldn't get my bags through!

FWIW, on boarding yesterday, they could not accept my T2 BP - they had to reprint one of their own ... the T2 BP has a 1 dimensional Barcode, the T1 BP had a 2 dimensional pattern.

The main thing is then the T2 issued one dimensional barcoded boarding pass (with the orange D sticker) gets you through customs & on to more important things. :p If they have to subsequently reprint another one when boarding it's no big deal.

I think something like this happened to Stark back in July when QF at BNE Dom gave him both boarding passes BNE/SYD on QF501 then JQ35 SYD/MEL then when he got to the boarding gate at T1 JQ said "we've been paging you to give you your boarding pass" or something to that effect. They didn't page the Flounge though but I'm not sure whether JQ would know that an Flounge actually exits.

Yep and the same thing would've happened in december but I went up to the desk before I boarded and asked for a reprint of my boarding pass. They didn't mention anything about paging me that time, I believe quite a few people had to get their boarding passes printed that run.

Strange, my JQ35 BP print by QF DOM at ADL worked ok in October when boarding.

Maybe JQ in ADL use the 2 dimensional boarding passes?

Sounds like we might have to exercise some caution with this scenario as the all important 'D' sticker will be on the SYD T2 (or airport of your choice) issued boarding pass that won't scan at the gate so we need to ensure JQ don't rip the 'old' bdg pass when exchanging it for the new one because we need to give customs in MEL the boarding pass that has the orange sticker on it which with the customs stamp on it.

It would be no use doing another orange sticker as it wouldn't be stamped. :o

I just assumed it was because you get the receipt style boarding pass from bne QP. When I asked for a new boarding pass in december the agent kindly reminded me not to lose the original since I'll need it for immigration. I think they have a lot of experience with D stickered boarding passes on this flight.

I wasn't clear. It was a QF issued BP on QF card, due to being on a QF booking. probably the trouble is I'm not sure about this whole 1D/2D barcode thing.

Ahh right, mine were on the same booking too so I got JQ35 on qantas stock initially but the my seat assignments were middle seats right down the back, when I got a new seat the new boarding pass was reprinted on the receipt style jq stock.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Sounds like we need to manufacture stamps now… I’ll get right on it ;)

And have customs and immigration knocking on our doors about counterfit stamps? No thanks...

That reminds me, I'd better try & do some JQ seat selection for the SYD/MEL sector in whY. Has anyone else done this or do you just leave it until the day?

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Doing JQ35 Tuesday and have done ILCI and like to thank all for the ideas in getting the JQ35 BP faster to enjoy more time in the lounge, looks like pop in to the T2 QP and get the 'reprint'. Now my question is arriving into T2 on a DJ flight, do you think I could get the free Qantas shuttle from T3 to T1? Or is for just QF/one world passengers? Or should we just pay the and get the bus over to T1?
Thanks again for this site and the people who suggest ideas etc.
