Strategy to obtain US Amex

Does anyone have a free option for receiving verification codes?

I used to use TextNow but unfortunately it now seems to be pushing people towards locking in the number for a year at a cost of USD7.99 to unlock viewing of verification codes.

Someone in our group chat succesfully used Bypass Voice, SMS and Text Verifications - Real US Numbers to get Google Voice number not long ago. It costs a couple of dollars but the number is yours forever. There might be some free service around if you look hard enough.

Thanks Finale.

As in the number is yours forever once you get Google Voice set up? I might just bit the bullet and oh for TextNow and see if I can get Google Voice set up.

Two other questions:
1. Does Google Voice work for Amex and Chase or most banks verification codes via text or calls?
2. Is it difficult to get my current TextNow phone number with Amex swapped over to the new Google Voice one?

Yes I mean GV is yours for free...sorry not sure if forever though. Maybe one day they want to start charging but I doubt it.

1. GV has been working with Amex, Citi, Cap1 and Chase for me. The only exception is Chase verification when you call them. It appears only post paid numbers work for that. Not really an issue though as they can verify you by asking questions instead. Other Chase text verification works fine like 2fa.

2. Very easy. Can be done online.

Excellent, thanks mate. That’s fine. I’ll worry about that if or when that day rolls around.

1. That sounds good.
2. Likewise, I’ll have a dig around to see how to replace it.

Text verified looks alright, I’ll give it a crack. I thought I could get TextNow working via call verification instead of text. I managed to get it into GV, but couldn’t use it to verify when trying to add a GV number unfortunately.

I couldn’t get verification texts on TextNow for either Citi or Amex. Have switched to a prepaid TMobile deal. Bought off Amazon with links provided further up thread. Works well to receive verification texts in AU. Worth every Penny to avoid the hassle.

Has anyone had recent experience of opening a US bank account? Planning to visit in December.

I have applied for ITIN but not sure it will arrive in time for the trip so lets assume I wont have one.

Is Bank of America still the easiest? I have a US forwarding address service.

Thank You

Citibank is cool as well. Been with them since 13 or 14 and they even gave me a credit card when applying at the branch as a tourist with no ITIN (got some $$ going in there).

Citi is the easiest, Other options: BOA, Wells Fargo, Capital One, Schwab and HSBC.

Has anyone tried the T-Mobile Prepaid eSim app?

Any Google Fi users here?

thank you
My plan is due to expire soon and Google Fi has been all over every social media platform in the last few weeks so I'll investigate.

Looking at the Google Fi Reddit, there seems to be quite a bit of complaints about it. Keen to see what your research uncovers and if you’ll be going for it.

Just a follow up, managed to get GV setup so that’s awesome. Text verified work a charm. I had to do it twice though must have mucked up the process somehow, but all good in the end.

Cheers.
