Strategy to obtain US Amex

Yes, believe you need a US mobile number to set it up.
Yes, you can transfer a mobile number in but not get a new one.

I transferred my 412 number in when I left the states and I still get a delightful parade on yinzer scams messaging me.

My experience has been that is works fine for Chase and Amex, but Citi don’t recognise it as a mobile number for the purposes of verification.

Citi is the easiest, Other options: BOA, Wells Fargo, Capital One, Schwab and HSBC.

BofA all was needed was Aussie Passport & DL. Super supper simple. Opened in BofA HQ outside Bryant Park & obtained a secured credit card in less than 20 mins. Might suggest going to a large city brach if possible where associates have opened accounts for foreigners.

Same with Citi, all they needed from me was Passport and Driver License. Within 15 minutes the account was opened, the card was sent to my Aussie address in less than a week, I have both of my Citi accounts (Aus and US) linked and regularly making fee free and instantly Global transfers.

Some time ago, I recall getting a "we're unable to deal with foreigners anymore" letter from Citi and so updated address to Florida. Good to see they're dealing with foreigners again.

Has anyone tried the T-Mobile Prepaid eSim app?

Any Google Fi users here?

thank you

I bit the bullet and downloaded the eSim app and chose the $15 package and it all went smoothly. Thought it failed as it was no service for about 10 mins but then suddenly kicked into life. Texts were coming in etc.

Its a 30 day plan so i need to top up again to cover the $15. I have read that if you load less then it eventually converts to the $3 a month plan but not sure how long that takes.

Also makes a huge difference the US market is so much larger than our market. US interchange is also high enough to fund generous rewards programs. Australian interchange is now too small to do so.

Finally, after applying for 11 cards in the US, I got an instant approval for the first time for Amex Business Gold. This is the third Amex card I used ITIN to apply. The first two Amex wanted me to confirm the number. I heard someone said before that an instant approval was for SSN only and that was wrong :D

On the same day, I got an instant denial from Cap1 lol Probably due to having too many cards and at 4/24.

Looking at this thread and wow this is quite deep. Seems like no matter the method stepping into the USA is the first step.

I too had an instant approval for Business Platinum with 150K bonus recently.

This thread may prove useful to those looking to secure an AAdvantage credit card for AA status going forward

Hey guy sorry if this question has been asked before but I am struggling to find the answer. I got a Hilton Aspire card on 6th May this year using global transfer, then got my ITIN last month. Eagerly waiting to apply for another credit card with ITIN linked but so far I cant see my FICO score. How long did it take you guys to get your credit score from AMEX, is 6 months the maximum time it takes? Should I expect my score to come by the end of this month?

Thanks for any replies

I got an Aspire card via GT in late February this year and still no FICO score showing.
How did you go about getting your ITIN - I am about to look in to this?

Oh damn looks like it'll take a while then... I used a tax agent located in Aus - Gingerbread tax. But it takes a while (around 3 months) at the moment.
