Strategy to obtain US Amex

My Bonvoy Brilliant has been approved after submitting my ITIN document!

Since this is my second US Amex, is it possible to ask them to let me add it to my mobile wallet before the physical card is delivered?

Unless you get access to the instant card number at the end of the application process or via email soon thereafter, you have to wait for the physical card.

There’s a time-limited, best ever offer on the Amex Green: 60K MR after $3K spend in 6 months + 20% back on travel & transit (up to $200)

That means the card pays you $50 and 60K MR in the first year.

This card is fantastic for people based in Australia:
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • 3x on travel worldwide
  • 3x on transit worldwide
  • 3x on restaurants worldwide
  • $189 CLEAR credit per calendar year
  • $100 Loungebuddy credit per calendar year
  • $150 annual fee
You can sign up (including via GT) using the referral link I’ve posted in the referral thread.

Has anyone successfully done a 3rd global transfer 😂

There are mixed experiences with a 2nd GT card and it'll depend on your strategy.

For Amex, many have successfully applied for a 2nd GT once they've received a FICO score which is currently 8-9 months. Sometimes you might get through without a FICO score but YMMV.

If you intend to move out of the Amex space and get an ITIN, you may want to consider waiting for your ITIN and applying with FICO score.
Thanks!!

Well this is my 1st US Amex Platinum, since this is a charge card. How does US Amex determine my limit? do they used my GT transfer history to determine spending limit?
I'll mainly use this card for Airfare, hotel & restaurant spent.
(so I can meet the $6k spending required for signup bonus)

I have read a lot of posts where people get flags the first month for spending just couple hundred of dollars.

Should I use the "App"spending power button or call ask the customer service for my limit?

Please share your experience

You don't have a set credit limit with charge cards.

Best course of action is to go slow (don't start putting $50,000 charges on it — anything under $1,000 should be fine in most circumstances) and don't use the spending power button — that is likely to trigger a financial review where you'll need to provide Amex with access to your US tax return information.

Thanks for the info, but unfortunately it looks like I'm in pop up jail  Opened two in the past ~14 months, haven't closed either. I put spend regularly on one but not the other, might need to go buy a few things with it.
Sorry to hear that. Popup jail is a black box. Putting spend on cards does seem to be the best way of exiting it.

Thanks!!

Do not use the check my spending power more then once in a day as that will trigger a financial review !

Also initially do not spend more then your earnings in a day / week for the same time period .

Hi guys, if we apply for a second card through GT and it get's rejected - does that become an issue in terms of credit history (i.e. in Aus it will be a credit check and show up on your credit report)? Tempted to apply for the green card via GT 2nd time around..

Also, how long does it usually take to transfer AU MR to US MR? Understand it's once per year and hoping to transfer mine to make use of the Royal Blue promo which ends 22/05!

Can I apply for this using the nova credit option as I currently don't have a AMEX Au account?

Is this a good card as your first US card or is the type of card you would cancel and not keep long term?

I believe in the US if you apply for another card soon after a precious one With same lender it’s classified as a soft check as opposed to hard which has a greater negative impact .

Anywhere from a week to 2 or so depending on the team .
It’s once per year per account at either end .
So if you have more then one MR account at both end…

Thanks mate. I applied for the Gold card in March 23..would this be considered close?

RE the MR points. I got the Aus Platinum and Essentials so will combine those to transfer out

From my experience I believe Amex does not make fresh credit checks for subsequent cards or it may be a soft enquiry .

I would say it is the best long-term keeper card for an Australian.

For someone in the US, I would say the Gold or Platinum is better because you can get close to offsetting the annual fee through use of the credits, but most of them are of diminished use in Australia.

My view is that any Amex card is good for at least two years because after the first year you're likely to get a sizeable retention offer that will more than offset the second annual fee. The third year might be a bit more uncertain (sometimes you don't get as good a retention offer the second time around), but after two full years you'll have enough credit history to be a lot less worried about cancelling the card if you can't justify it.
