Fair point, maybe should have thought that through as MEL >ADL is quite inexpensive in Economy.

However I did not intend to burn more points than needed to get me to the required number of status credits of platinum. 100 SC with a Double Status Credit promotion in play gets me over the line.

Another 8K of points and a few $$ would have yielded 70SC more ;)

Why would you book a X, they are never good value as the copay is normally more than a paid fare? ADL -MEL is 16K and $116, so the YASA cost 8000 points and $76??

They can be very good value on multi sector routes actually. I booked a LST-MEL-CBR once for example that was pricing at around $300 and I got it for 8000 and <$100

Fair point, I am not sure what you value your points at but I am not sure its good value, each to their own.

But he didn't need more, that was his point

At this stage, however if they were sitting on 430 SC achieved towards a loyalty bonus at the end of the anniversary year it would be a different story, or be 70 SC below the three year average to retain a tier at review date.....

This is true, but for me I don't need to burn any more points for status runs, to obtain Platinum status this year & to for the status to last up until December 2014 for me is Bliss.

I'm really low on points from where I was 6 months ago, so time to build them up again & maybe look at a JASA to South Africa in 2014, not only is the Destination amazing, so too is the flight over the Antarctic Icesheets on QF 63!

And before you point out Platinum 1 before the end of December this year is out of the equation.

I would not even be suggesting the extra benefits such as partner gold etc are worth doing a run for.

That benefit of P1 is very tempting.... I do agree, but just a little too far for this moggy to chase in such a short amount of time:)

considering you earn 2000 back a cost of 6000 points total to save more than $200 on my example. I think that's reasonable.

The co-payment seems to have increased somewhat. Last year I was seeing 128k points + approx $680 one way SYD-LHR (I think the return was also similar, but maybe it's the LHR ADT). Did QF reduce the Fuel Surcharges for LHR routes to align with EK? I'm also consistently finding no QF2 LHR-SYD classic awards up to 350 days out.

I have formatted the data into a Google Docs spreadsheet up to this post using the format:

Date | Cabin | Route | Points | Co-pay | credit-card? | Max points cost (if known) | SCs earned | Classic co-pay*

The spreadsheet should be able to be viewed by anyone, as long as your local network does not restrict access. I.e. you do not need to request permission from me to view it.

Please PM me any suggestions you have to improve it, to save this thread becoming distracted from its intended purpose.

*There has been a request for the Classic Award co-payment to be included, to compare with the ASA rate. So as you do your homework before booking kindly take note of it and include it if possible. Ta.

Booked today for Sep 2014 | U | LAX > SYD QF12 | 96,000 points | A$670.44 + A$30 cc fee | 162,563 max points cost | 180SCs | Classic co-payment USD $434.52 + 96k points

Changed this over the phone to an FASA in P class for a different date for A$402.30.

For reference, the equivalent classic award is 144k points + US $434.97 - ie pretty much the same cash amount as J classic but increased points.
However, I don't know what the equivalent "straight up FASA with minimum points" price is. My guess is the cash co-payment would be similar as the JASA and the points increased to 144k (same principle as per classic). If that is the case, then 48k points were "bought" at a value of $402 (~0.84c per point).

Just checked the original date and there is now U availability. I checked not long after my original booking and it appeared that said U seat was unavailable and I had taken the only seat. Pretty sure there was only one available at time of booking.
So, it is possible that the U class fare went back to inventory after I *gave it up*.
I haven't got EF to set alerts but it is plausible that the above is true.

Telephone was answered within a couple of rings by Tron in Brisbane and she knew exactly what she was doing. We did have to do the booking twice because originally I requested ADL-SYD and return SYD-MEL-ADL (because the times suited us better) which showed as 96,000 points classic but 112,000 as JASA which I thought was odd but maybe not. The copay was also going to be $710.60 but would have netted 140SC each not 120. Tron suggested the direct flight at lower points + copay thus the booking had to be started again.
