Sydney airport Baggage system outage

Oh dear. I'm sure some pax will have emotional baggage if theirs gets left behind.
But would they have a case? Or would they just carry on?
Hope that some from the previous marriage is never found

This morning at SYD Term 3 at 8.30am the bag drops aren't working and each piece is being individually checked.

Security line invigilators were having everyone weigh their carry on. 10kg max strictly enforced. I had go through the charade of moving some papers out of my carry on to my briefcase.

I think that’s unrelated to the baggage outage, QF at SYD seems to be really cracking down on carry on - one up one down signs everywhere (including in the lounge) and staff tagging second bags to ensure they’re not placed in the overhead lockers.

Which would only mean anything, if the crew onboard went through the overhead lockers checking for tags, which I'm sure they don't given they have better things to be doing. But does raise some interesting scenarios:
  • Passengers just removing said tags themselves
  • Passengers moving other passengers (tagged) bags out of the lockers if there's no room

Including business?

On my flight last week they weren't checking boarding passes, so I would say yes. The QF policy is the same in all cabins (and they had advertisements in the J lounge about the 1 up 1 down policy).

QF has the same allowance for Y & J.

If it's a full flight and they are at the point of checking carry on (as my flight was), the staff were definitely monitoring the lockers. At one point they told the gate to check all future bags.

Yep. Second time in as many weeks I've been weight-invigilated at SYD.

Yep I'm travelling in J.

In the security line?
And if I said I am only here for the lounge for JQ reasons etc?

Well that sucks. I can't recall ever being weighed (or at least my carry-on) or challenged at the gate or security on any airline when travelling in J. Nearly always over when international and occasionally in domestic. Like @Chalkie I guess I may have to go through the charade of putting stuff in pockets or shift to the 'personal item'.

Looks like the notice is still in the app today. Can someone who goes through today confirm if it is still down. Will be going through tomorrow and this will affect my flow forward plans (if activated).

In my case they weren’t weighing bags, only checking sizes and pieces.

There was a reason for this, the flight was sold out and already late. There wasn’t space for all the carry-ons so it was good they were being proactive to minimise delays.

I don’t really understand the weight limits on carry-ons if they are within the required dimensions, UK and USA have much higher allowances. That said, I can work with the current 10Kg + personal item, much better than the previous 7Kg or JQ’s including the weight of your personal item.

But as for J getting a pass to ignore the allowances, gonna have to disagree with you there. Why should J get to bring more onboard when it’s quite likely some Y pax won’t even be able to bring even their allowance on?

I don’t see it being policed on QF widebodies but fully support enforcing it for all pax, including J, on 737s.

All good yesterday afternoon. They were testing every bag being checked in for explosives, adding 30s to the process.
