Tale of 2 brekkies [or Qantas "Cafe" Breakfast Sucks!]

Very underwhelming J breakfast experience from HKG to SYD recently. Not just the limited choice (e.g. fruit or a cinnamon scroll) but the quality of food provided left a lot to be desired, especially for a Business cabin. Breakfast seemed a bit rushed even though we were a couple of hours out of Sydney. There was no table cloth (just the little tray) which isn't a big deal, but small touches like this just detract from what should be a premium product.

Did DOH-BUD on QR recently (in Y) and there was a dinner cloth provided with meal tray.
QF is on a slippery down-slope and at a race to the bottom. After getting my eyes opened and sampling SQ and QR....QF is losing it's shine.

Whilst this thread is mainly about the Café style breakfast, I'd also note that there were no pre-dinner drinks offered and the dinner service was quite delayed and then felt rushed. I've been a fairly loyal Qantas customer, but this isn't the only time recently that I've been disappointed with the timing, offerings and quality of service in International J in recent trips.

service standards have been maintained in first. Last month HKG-SYD we had pre-dinner drinks and table cloths for the continental breakfast (with a wide range of choice). It was also interesting to note that during a couple of interactions with crew to order drinks and then dinner, cabin announcements could be heard in the business class cabin which we were spared in the First cabin... no idea what they were about though.

I note from another thread someone saying F class was not necessary on HKG-SYD because it is a 'sleeping only' flight... but given the greater freedom, less hurried service, and extra amenities - I'd still say it is still worth the premium.

Surprising to read some of the posts in this thread.

I have had some ordinary breakfasts in economy such as muesli or pastry but my breakfasts in premium cabins have always been satisfactory. I would not be happy with some of the offerings that have been posted in this thread.

See my post 104 on the difference between what we were served in y+ compared to J. We were shocked that Y+was so much better than J.

I had thought that by now Qantas would have improved the J breakfast or at least give passengers a choice of continental or something more substantial if that is what they want.

Will be interesting to see if any improvements to this are made in the near future.

Thanks jojen!

Let's hope RedRoo is taking note. Cost cutting at the pointy end will not end well for QF.

We don't even have any acknowledgement that Red Roo is taking notes, or do we ?

Google told me the price for my seaweed-wrapped rice ball is about $1.50 from fast food stores.

"..... These days, however, with the spread of convenience stores, the image of onigiri has begun to change from a food prepared by hand at home to a type of fast food purchased in a store. One onigiri, featuring a variety of ingredients, such as umeboshi (pickled plum), salmon flakes, dried bonito flakes, sweet-sour boiled kombu (kelp), and salted cod roe, among others, sells for 100 to 130 yen at a convenience store...."

My most recent breakfast on QF128 in F was a glass of orange juice unceremoniously thrust into my hand.

Seriously, that was all you've got ?

QF enemies would be happy with this strategy, Red Roo.

So, I should still be happy with the extra $1.50 rice ball ex NRT (J).

there is a difference between what was requested and what was on offer.

I think we need to establish if Happy Trails was after a full breakfast but it was unavailable... which would mean a substantial change in the menu in a month.

I flew a fortnight ago in First HKG-SYD and there was a breakfast menu - purely 'continental'. I have kept a copy and will publish it here.

I can't advise what any of it was like since I requested no breakfast and to be simply woken up with a black coffee 30 minutes before arrival.

That was all I requested, but my gripe was more the manner in which it was served.

to be fair it's a pretty comprehensive selection including warm bakery items. given dinner only finishes about 5 hours before breakfast time it was more than appropriate.

Including warm bakery items  More than appropriate   If one chose not to have dinner, because of the time it was served, would the scrooge breakfast still be 'appropriate'?

I wonder if it is 'appropriate' for those paying for a business ticket to expect the same sort of breakfast offering they got about a year ago, or to expect a breakfast more substantial than a rice ball or small bowl of peeled fruit?

IIRC it was plenty to make a decent brekky... juices and energizers, fruit, muesli and cereals, yogurt and honey (I remember cause that's what I had and it was delicious), toast, muffins, croissants, hot Chinese buns (pork or something).

plus the hot steak sandwich if you wanted.

the flight leaves HKG at 745pm... it's smack bang in dinner time. everyone in the cabin ate dinner.

I noticed last week on QF2 LHR-DXB in F, the Cafe breakfast was offered with no hot meal choice. Didn't bother me as I was connecting through to SYD, but thought it was poor form not have a proper hot breakfast option for those who wanted it.

This was my breakfast MEL-SYD on the weekend. The eggs were supposed to be "poached" but they were okay. Was also offered warm almond croissants which were quite good!
This was a Muslim meal. I thought it was quite substantial for a short flight and enjoyed it. :)

Here is a photo of a muslim meal from yesterday, SYD-MEL as lunch. Grilled chicken salad. Looked great but unfortunately bland (even with an extra salad dressing). No flavour...

and that pastry/cake thing in the red striped box is just horrendous.. absolutely inedible!

This is breakfast from SYD-CNS on a Saturday. Muslim meal again... I have had this meal before on a MEL-PER J flight as breakfast... It's not the best. Some sort of indian/vegetarian potato dish with couscous.. Rather disappointing.

and again the rock hard baked items that I don't even bother trying now..

Don't know why I was given Soy milk though?? I can have normal milk as a Muslim lol... :p

Your poached egg breakfast looked great, as did the chicken. A little more inventive than the meals I have been offered.

The indian style meal was served to me on Thursday. It is pretty ordinary and I got soy as well (which I don't mind). So that meal doubles as AVML and Muslim (and probably LF too).

I never eat any cake or muffin served served with my special meals as they are always gluten free and are always awful!
