The Best Part of Flying?

Two things that I love about flying - the take off, especially just before lift off the ground and the landing, which often gives a good aerial view of a city.

It's hard to explain but I'll try. Just after take off, wheels just leave the runway and the aircraft appears to "sink" slightly as it becomes airborne. You then start the climb.

I have to admit, whilst I love everything about flying and travel, there are aspects I really like

1. Waking up the morning I'm traveling. The excitement of what is about to happen is very very cool, esp when flying international.

2. Arriving at the airport

3. Smiling for the customs officer, I'm not a huge fan of the lines, but going through outbound customs is sort of the indication that this is more than a quick CBR-SYD-CBR flight.

4. Arriving at a (QP / J / F) lounge and getting that first drink / something to eat

5. Seeing the door of the plane just as boarding, esp if it's a big / favorite bird like a 747...

6. Getting comfy in the seat, esp if it's in a premium class.

7. Sitting at the end of the runway, hearing the engines spool up, waiting a second or two at half power, and then the cap't unleashing them... (Takes me back to a trip to my first trip I did as a 9 year old)

8. Dinner time

9. When the FA's turn off the lights, and you know that you're in for the long haul.

10. The AVOD watching favorite movies / tv shows / listening to music and watching the moving map

11. Breakfast

12. Landing at a foreign airport where I may or may not be able to speak the language

13. Getting through customs and walking out of the exit door now officially in the foreign country.

Yeah, it's safe to say I love everything about flying...

Agree with this !!!!
More so work than home.
Adding to this, I love it when one of my colleagues and I both put in for upgrades, and yep you guessed it- Dmac6345 upgraded and colleague- well better luck next time !!!!;)

On reflection, the thread header should have been "The Best Parts of Flying?"

Love takeoff, but hard to go past a well executed cross wind landing at Canberra.

It's also spectacular just under a thick cloud layer :)

I remember flying in a small Rockwell Commander just under the cloud layer, returning to Sydney from Condobolin. It was not just cloudy but stormy with lots of rain, and we had gone below the cloud to avoid some of the bumps. As we tracked to the north of Orange the pilot said (as I was sitting on the RH seat) keep your eye out for Canobolis - it should be just over there somewhere!

I recently took off and flew around an electrical storm whilst still ascending. It was night and one of the best experiences I have had on a plane as I saw the storm from below, then above and around.

For me it's at the airport just before departure, sat overlooking the apron watching aircraft come and go from faraway place, watching travellers with emotion, the departure board flicking across with destinations that bring memories back or places you want to visit. I don't know why, but that part really is the peak for me.

Wandering by the masses and directly into check in / immigration / security, flashing the relevant FF, Express Path or APEC card/s as I go... love it! DYKWIA?? :)
