The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

The latest issue with 1b is a mixture of uncertainty about supplies arriving into clinics and clinics not going online or not applying for it. My clinic isn't doing the vaccination and told me to go to the local Hospital. Hardly helpful of them when the local hospitals are doing all the 1A people still, as it should be. Then when I found a clinic that will make appointments, I tried ringing my usual clinic back in case I needed a cover letter, only to be told their practice was closed (it was Friday morning!) so clearly they had been inundated with calls and turned off the phone.

Even if clinics had their full supplies, making appointments by phone calls for mass vaccination was never going to be efficient. It has to go online so people can see an appointment time, even if weeks away, and secure it. No need for any contact.

Flu vaccinations have been booked online for years and while not the same process, it still has to deal with timing, supplies etc so I don't know why so many practices didn't take advantage of the tested technology. I'm thinking it was up to the ability of their practice manager to work all that out.

At the moment it’s about the supply of the vaccine. It isn’t there yet. Period.

About 30% of Gp clinics have tendered to vaccinate and I bet that list grows as the slow clinics watch their patients sample their competition. Then we have the mass vaccination hubs, which yes some states are doing better than others, thankfully our two big states are on the ball here.

The jabbing isn’t the issue right now, flu shots have been done at at even faster speed in years previous.

It’s actually getting the vaccine which is slowing everything down. But once the pipeline fill occurs there should be exponential growth in the vaccine rates.

Hint: Anything to do with 1.9M doses projected for delivery, followed by further 1.9M doses by about now? 😉
Did they have control of that? Are we talking about the AZ they contracted to buy that can’t be delivered?

Anyway was reading Murphy’s presentation again - with 40% of the supply being held back for second doses. Good forward thinking - imagine the howls on here if CSL had a problem and people couldn’t get their second jabs.

Applying a bit of basic Arithmetic though, can’t see 2A starting until mid June unless CSL can increase production.....

I was just referring to my expectations with 1.9M, followed by the next 1.9M announced. I doubt that I’m alone.

It was too good to be true of course. Yes, the AstraZeneca. Big announcements at the time, raising some expectations. Something that can’t be delivered (as “promised”). Not getting into the blame game, just an observation, but we don’t all agree on many things here. 😉

I think when the borders open will depend on how the vaccination effort goes overseas - shambles in Europe at the moment. Just saw a snippet from Murphy that if things go well with the rollout overseas by the end of the year we could be seeing shorter hotel quarantine or quarantine at home for returning travellers.

Well yes - totally understand raised expectations being dashed. However short of the Government sending armed troops over to Europe to extract the vaccine, not sure how that equates to its their fault.

The EU is still huffing and puffing about blocking exports.

A couple of days ago, when looking at the HealthEngIne app, I was provided with two clinics out of the 10 nearest, that are 780-plus km away. Things will get better, I know. 🤔

And not opening up to internet bookings is solely because the clinics refused to sign up. That's all. The one that did sign up in Adelaide is only 10 minutes away for me, and their process has gone seamlessly.........assuming of course that they have now received their stock 🤞😉. Time will tell tomorrow.

Now that you mention announcements (and this probably belongs in the humour thread), a couple of days ago someone did send me a (satirical) headline suggesting that “Almost 90% of Australians have now received a vaccine announcement” ...

Yes, things are a big mess in much of the EU.

Good that the UK has vaccinated (one jab) 50% of their adults, and 95% of those aged over 65.
Shows the power of a public health system. Israel has done well as well (although you would expect that). Europe has kind of surprised me as it has public health as well, but it’s just a shambles.

USA is theoretically doing well now, but from what I am hearing it’s very inequitable with higher socio economic groups doing well, but not so much the other demographics. Hopefully that will correct by the end of the rollout.

We are 2A so worst case scenario seems to be 1st jab in late May/early June, 2nd jab by Sept and hopefully open borders soon after!

If your home clinic has been smart enough to tender for the vaccinations, in a couple of weeks or so - make sure they know you are happy to be called up last minute for any last minute cancellations... trust me as the vaccine availability resolves over next few weeks there will be opportunities for those who are a bit more proactive to get done earlier....

I was wondering about that. My GP has said they will have a waiting list as well as being able to book appointments online. I assume the waiting list is for those hoping to get an earlier appointment but maybe over time could be used for someone from a lower group?

Oh, yes. The announcement about the announcement, where something will be announced, as already announced. 🤭
