The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Well this article is certainly saying that boosters will be required if you have had Pfizer at the recommended 3 week interval.
I am greatly disturbed when Australia does not immediately follow the lead of Canada and others.
Vaccine makers have tight adgenda, and will stick to the known, and downplay external factors.
I think I have read the sweet spot for pz is 6-8 weeks. 3 weeks in hot zones I accept as a necessity. Rather than hard inflexible timeframes, there should be wriggle room. I was due for my AZ booster in Canberra, and they told me I could not bring it forward on the day Canberra went into a lockdown. 12 weeks vs 11.5 weeks. But Oh, if I saw the doctor that could change. I smell overservicing, so will make a point of getting it elsewhere.

Can I type in my rural NSW postcode and get a location of the nearest provider? No. Rather than a list, I must do this eligibility test thingy again. Useless.

I’m not going to say it’s a party atmosphere down at the Royal exhibition building but today and yesterday have been beautiful days to be queuing outside in the sunshine and it has been busier than I’ve ever seen it. A lot of people are coming out to take ‘I’m vaccinated’ selfies in exhibition gardens’.

Probably Australia’s most beautiful jab centre 😆

The good thing about the current outbreaks is that it is driving up the vaccination rate, and I daresay has also had the Commonwealth seek more doses, and to get them more quickly.

Mind you if we had not botched the AZ rollout we as a nation would be well in front of where we currently are.

Agreed and sorry to NSW paying the price but it was the outbreak we had to have.

Exciting news as local MRNA production in VIC creeps closer….

——

CSL’s planned mRNA factories in Victoria will produce 50 million doses in four months

Australia could make enough mRNA vaccines to protect the entire population at short notice under plans by biotech giant CSL to build two new facilities to fight future waves of coronavirus.

The facilities are being designed to produce at least 50 million doses within 16 weeks once construction is finished, in a pitch to the federal government to develop a sovereign capacity to respond to new variants of COVID-19 and other pathogens.

Project management peoples! 50 million needles and 50/6 mill glass vials are needed. Also in the 'off' season, something else made, say for Ross River of Dengue.

The model doesn't just focus on one state, both the state and national average have to hit the targets. But yes, one state can be laggards which will mean they cant open up. Seems fair to me.
I think some are feeling left out because they can see NSW with just maybe ACT can make the national average of 80% just on their own (of course with 60%, 70% contribution from the other States/Territories)

I think ACT and Tas will get there about the same time as NSW. Victoria and SA won’t be far behind. QLD and WA need to lift their game but the increased supply of Pfizer/Moderna will help with QLD, given their aversion to AZ. Peer pressure will help as well - no one wants to feel their state is slow…..

Yes, definitely - the last time I noticed the gap was 30 days first to last - it might have stretched to 45 days now.

Note that the graphic below is based on maintaining the current rate (What will occur will of course be different).
The gap will widen further once those extra half a million Pfizer doses (265,000 people) start being used in NSW.

All jurisdictions will get there quicker due to the Polish purchase, but NSW will now accelerate even more as it gets more, and it gets them first. Vic has already announced last week that the rate next week is likely to be quicker compared to last week mainly due to more AZ being vaccinated.

Everyone has different projections - the ABC (Casey Briggs) is 1st dose % of eligible.

Covidlive also has projections which are much closer.

What does this mean?

Much situation in NSW could have been avoided if more appropriate policy decisions were made in mid-June 2021.
But, if you mean Australia has been lucky to avoid very serious consequences of COVID, I agree.
This lucky outcome was attributed to great policy responses by the Feds and NSW (the same mob who gave us the Ruby Princess outbreak).

I could say something about chickens coming home, but someone will make a comment about avian flu.

Not sure NSW Health necessarily agree fully.

The first case was known on 16/6 and the West Hoxton party was 2 or 3 days later. Its been acknowledged that was the superspreader event most misunderstood.

No one is left out though, we all have the same opportunity to hit the targets. The fact that others states are opening up and are less likely to lockdown is likely to become one of the best incentives there is for the others to get vaccinated themselves, jealousy has always been a strong motivator!

If only AZ would pay some money to our CHO’s partner like Pfizer did, QLD would be killing it 😂🤪

Not sure if anyone has mentioned the cost of the vaccines before. As expected wealthier countries pay more per dose to offset the cost for those less fortunate. The average cost for either pfizer or moderna is around $30US. AZ is about the cost of a coffee but they are selling it cheaper as they appear to not be profiteering on the back of a pandemic.

Well for Astra Zeneca, being one of the first to market, say they sold 1 billion doses - even 0.1c is a good amount

50.2% of 40-44 have had a first dose, the last of the 5 year age groups 40-44 and up to pass the 50% first dose milestone. 35-39 only has 29.8% with a first dose, so there's a lot of work to do with the under-40's.

50-54 fully vaccinated has reached 30.1%

WA now has 50.28% of 70+ fully vaccinated. VIC has 49.91% and should go past 50% when Sunday's numbers are released tomorrow.
